Where the Dallas Mavericks will be playing basketball beyond the 2030-31 season has been a trending topic in North Texas over the past few months.

The team could be on the move with the expiration of its lease in 2031 at American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas’ Victory Park.

Mavericks CEO Rick Welts told The Dallas Morning News the Mavericks are looking for a 30- to 50-acre site in Dallas, but he stressed in July that the team is nowhere close to making a decision.
In a recent “State of Play” series of stories, The News dove into a few spots in the region that could become the Mavericks’ new stomping grounds, should AAC no longer be in play.

  1. 8:17 The Golden Knights are an outlier to the Vegas sports scene compared to the Raiders and (maybe) the A's since the Knights are a "homegrown" team with a fanbase of Vegas locals as opposed to a relocated franchise from California.

  2. It's all too familiar…I was a fan of the Supersonics growing up and it was very clear when an OKC guy bought the team what was happening.

I live in DFW now and ever since the Luka trade, it's felt like the soul has been sucked out of the city when it comes to basketball. No one cares about the Mavs anymore and it sure feels like it's by design.

Them all of a sudden suing the Stars for something that happened almost 30 years ago is another example. I hate the Stars and I even side with them in this situation.

The Adelsons are unanimously hated here in Dallas, even more so than Jerry Jones.

  3. As you said, we don't know what's happening behind the scenes IRT the stadium issue. Things may be so contentious and toxic that they can't wait for a new arena to be built or the current one refurbished to their liking. I agree that leaving the DFW market would be a step down, but who knows what's happening behind the scenes?

  4. If this were a Depressed Ginger video:
Dallas Mavericks *PLOTTING* move to Vegas?! Also trump rules and immigrants ruin everything.

  5. I think expansion fees are move valuable to the NBA then relocation fees. With that said I guess they could move to Vegas and just expand in Seattle. I think the NBA is trying to leverage Seattle and Vegas much like the NFL did in extorting tax payer money to build new stadiums. I really find it sickening and one of the things I like the least about sports in general. Without Marc Cuban I can see the Dallas moving, shared stadiums are never an ideal situation for a number of reasons.

  6. Does Dallas get an expansion team if they move to Vegas with Seattle ? Dallas is a top 5 media market

  7. If the Mavs were allowed to move to Vegas, Dallas would immediately get an expansion team. The NBA would absolutely not want a void in the Dallas market.

  8. This is kind of old news from when the Luka trade happened.. but it has a lot of holes in it.
One thing is is gambling isn’t a Vegas only thing anymore. In fact, having gambling more wide spread across the country has been better for these owners connected to gambling.
Another thing is the money. Tanking in Dallas is a giant loss, then moving is a giant expense and finding a fitting arena/building one is another giant expense. And the money made from gamblers in Vegas will take decades to recoup all that when there’s gamblers everywhere now that the profit difference is hardly worth it.

The only way for this move to make sense is if Vegas is a better market than Dallas for an NBA team.

  9. Brodie, ex Milpitas guy here living in Las Vegas! The homecourt advantage argument doesn't hold water in my opinion. Selling a beer and 2 hotdogs to a homer or a visitor is $30 is $30! Raiders do well at the gate because of all the visitors and it's just 8 games/year. NBA is 40+ so I'm not bullish on that scenario. Casinos are also not interested in sending their patrons for 4 hours off-property.

  10. Dallas ownership will trade brands/franchise with either Memphis or New Orleans and then move to Las Vegas since they as an ownership group have an established identity i.e. Sands Corp in Vegas.

  11. with all the gambling and the fbi involved I would thing the nba would be a bit hesitant about putting a team in Vegas. they should put a team in Nashville over Vegas

  12. Are they really pouring a foundation for a baseball stadium in Vegas? Or could it possibly be for a basketball arena? Or are we at an early enough stage that it could be either one?

  13. With all the sports betting and gambling scandals in the NBA right now the Mavs getting a casino deal with a new arena in Dallas is a bad look… but moving to Vegas doesn’t sound like it solves that problem either!

  14. NBA will not trade in the Dallas market for Vegas. The Vegas market also has zero secondary markets due to NBA teams in Utah, Arizona, and SoCal. This NBA team's fanbase ends at Clark County at best the Nevada border.

  15. Silver and the other nba owners wouldn’t allow the Mavs to leave the Dallas market. That area is too big and profitable to lose. They already admitted they regret losing Seattle for a smaller city why would they want to move out of Texas for something smaller?

  16. The Lakers are ridiculously popular in Vegas. Probably more popular there than in LA. And right now, every Lakers fan is loving the Mavericks. Though that love is weaker after they fired Nico.

  17. as a lifetime fan, former season ticket holder for the mavs and citizen of Dallas everyone just stopped caring or will look at you with a face of sadness when you bring up the mavs. the soul of the mavs fandom was destroyed. I saw a little of what's left when nico got fired but i fear this city will never return to what it once was with the mavs

  18. Speaking of Dallas, teams judging by the crowd at Allegiant last night, it looks like the Cowboys already moved to Vegas 😆
