Shorthanded Trail Blazers Torched by the Phoenix Suns

Shorthanded Trail Blazers Torched by the Phoenix Suns

No Jerami Grant, No Point Guards, Many Problems. The Trail Blazers were down four (five even) rotation players and played like in a beatdown against the Phoenix Suns.

  1. The lack of depth was the issue in the beginning of the year, and now it shows.
Really hope for less injuries during the season.

  2. Jason Quick reported that Scoot is still week to week and now Jrue has a concerning calf injury. Is the Blazer’s pace of play leading to injuries?

  3. Hi Mike. Missing a third of a young team, including nearly all their experience, cannot be overcome. Instead of whining about that, we have to fall back to the last few years and embrace the good things we see from the youngsters. Maybe Yang will see more time without the pressure of having to win every game. When we get the team back we get our style back and start winning again. Lighten up…

  4. Great listen as always, really love your podcast 🫶🏻
I agree with most of your takes but i think you were a little harsh on Yang. Of course he didnt have the best game but i liked the way he came to play. I think our guys would have benefitted a lot from him holding the ball top of the key, as we saw with that sharpe and one. It would have taken away some responsibility to sharpe and especially deni who struggled to play the point yesterday. I think if we continue playing without a true point this could be a chance to maybe help the other guys on the court. But as you said Yang still is learning which passes he can play and which not but i think we saw good flashes yesterday. He was calm and composed when he had the ball even the one time they tried to trap him and he played it to shae. I really liked that play and i hope we can see more of that tonight

  5. Play Yang more and run plays through him at the post or high pick and roll. Blazers need variety in their offense. Defenses are catching on to the one dimensional offense

  6. Losing Scoot before the season started has finally caught up with the team. The other guards had to increase their minutes while trying to play fast and with pressure. Then losing Blake and Tisse early really added to the current train wreck. Hansen is a project, as expected, so he can't step up. Jrue can't play heavy minutes forever. Tou doesn't seem comfortable in the motion offense yet. I thought Caleb played well, but he is still learning the pro game- and is now under pressure to produce. In this game, the lack of fouls not being called early also impacted the Blazer's ability to keep pace. Refs you suck. Go Blazers.

  7. One thing that would help Hansen is to have guys cutting when he has the ball up top. I saw a lot of standing around, so he had nowhere to go with the ball. Hopefully they will start to help the kid make an impact by more movement.

  8. Camara’s decline is the little dirty secret that no one wants to talk about. Can’t shoot, can’t create his own shot and now he is getting blown by on defense. Drug test him?

  9. Let’s be real we aren’t making the playoffs this season. We need more talent and one more lottery player is needed

  10. When we’re down enough players to play rupert, and are lacking a PG, we need to embrace a down streak and get Hans reps as a point center. That Jokic floor coordinator potential is his biggest upside. There will be lots of turnovers. Lose now for his development, get back to winning once our guards start coming back from injuries and we don’t have to risk Jrue’s health with so many minutes.

Seeing as we have our 1st round pick next season, missing the play-in due to injuries wouldn’t be the worst thing ever. While I like and agree with the ambition to win, we’re not gonna win enough with this many injuries. But West is weaker than expected anyways…

  11. Blazers did aight in the 1st half. Both teams played hard. Caleb Love was draining triples. Clingan offered an interior presence. Sharpe & Deni got some nifty drives … after halftime… Blazers sputtered.. 0-10 shooting to begin 3rd quarter. Phoenix leaned on the tumbling Blazers with their own version of pressure defense, and uncorked a blowout victory.
… no time to worry, gotta shake it off… the pesky Bulls in town tonight (:

  12. It's gonna be a rough ride until we get our point Dawgs back!
When you look at the injury report , seeing guard guard guard guard guard it makes it kind of tough to run the floor.

  13. Solid assessment Mike.

Shaedon and Deni both felt like they were pressing, but, unfortunately they were really forced into pressing.

It is very ugly when Deni and Sharpe are driving in to kick to Murray, Sidy and Rupert, let alone Clingan and Camara who are both very limited offensive starters.

I hate to say it, but the idea of guys like Murphy, Sidy and Rupert archetypes, long athletes wings who can defend but have no offensive skills, is just not working. When we so many of these other teams with their deep bench players being shooters.

  14. Too many injuries for our ball handlers and our point of attack defense. We need to look at some ten day contracts to fill the void at point if we want to keep our success going or we can coast until our guard situation heals. This group was built around a team concept. We don't have a bunch of one on one stars. We had depth at every position until now. We have got to find a bandaid for the point position. This is a very good team. When it is complete. Let's be patient.

  15. Toumani's 3 point shot selection this season looks to be quite different than last season.

Last season, almost all of his 3 point shots were catch and shoot in the flow of the 1/2 court offense.

This season, they are asking him to read and react and create off the dribble in this new offensive system which is not at all where his skills are.

I don't see this offense suituing Toumani unless he's linked to a primary playmaker.

  16. I went to the game last night, and what I saw was a team without a viable point guard. The Trail Blazers did not commit to running their offense. Instead of the 5-out Motion and stampeding in transition, they stood in their assigned areas, did not move toward the ball, and telegraphed their passes. The defense was not terrible, but not their best. And, Shaedon, buddy! You have to get your outside shot figured out, dude! In your first season, you averaged 36%. Then 33%, then 31% and now, 27.5%! No. Stop. What did you do in your rookie season that worked? Your drives to the basket are first class. But, you're not allowed to go 0-6 from three, especially in the modern NBA.

  17. Yang should be consistently playing minimum 5 min per game regardless, at least with the way Blazers are playing now, he needs to develop

  18. Just an ugly game for the Blazers short handed or not. So many of the turnovers looked like mental lapses with lazy passing. I was ok with Yang's minutes as he was very engaged and didn't look lost like he had in earlier games.

  19. I noticed that since Sharpe has started taking high volume of shots the team doesn’t look good. At the first few games when he was quiet the team has been at its best.
