With NBA owners seemingly more focused on European expansion than on adding teams domestically, speculation has bubbled up about the potential sale of the New Orleans Pelicans and the team being moved to Seattle (or possibly Las Vegas).

Benson shot that idea down in an interview with Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune (hat tip ProFootballTalk).

“Let me be clear about this: The teams are not for sale. That’s in capital letters. I want everybody to know the teams are not for sale. I get tired of people asking me [if they’re for sale]. I’m going to turn 79 in January, but I’m pretty healthy. I hear that people want to talk to me about buying the team. I’m like, well, that’s a waste of my time. That’s not going to happen. And people need to calm down about the team moving.”

“It remains that when I die, both teams will be sold to the highest bidder and those proceeds will be used 100 percent to improve this community.”

  2. NOLA resident that can fill in some gaps…

-Since the 2024 SKC renovations were put on the back burner, there has been nary a mention of those restarting. The Superdome is done, but still nothing about SKC getting the help it needs. It is a dreadful arena.
-Superdome renovations were priority for this year’s Super Bowl, but so was a long-term lease agreement for the Saints. That long-term lease agreement is a whopping ten-year lease to 2035, with five-year team options to 2055. This agreement also came past the deadline to secure a Super Bowl in 2031, though they may have salvaged that with this half-hearted new deal.
-Talk of extending the SKC lease has been quieter than a cricket on Ambien, and talk of a new arena has been solely from residents spitballing where one should go, but not from anyone with any say in the matter.
-The two on-field/court products are abjectly terrible.

So, one lease agreement ends in four years, one in ten with the organization having the option to re-up. A “pretty healthy” Gayle Benson is 79, and has vowed to sell the team to the highest bidder upon her death, but no stipulation that owner keep the teams in town. Ticket sales are the lowest they’ve ever been, and the upper brass of each organization are friends and yes men to Benson.

    Actions speak louder than words.

  3. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to SI in October : “We’re always looking at everything. We wouldn’t be doing our jobs as a league if we weren’t always thinking about how we’re doing in our existing markets. There is absolutely no intention now to relocate any particular team, but it becomes part of the discussion. I think as we look at arena situations in given markets, we look at the ebb and flow of population in the country and economic prosperity in particular markets. We always want to make sure that we are in markets that can sustain a competitive team.” Markets like New Orleans and Memphis might not be as attractive to the NBA as they once were. Will it be one or two expansion teams in Seattle and Vegas, or will it be one or two existing NBA teams relocating to Seattle or Vegas? Regardless, I don't think they'll be an announcement either way anytime soon.

  4. I'd only sound the alarm if they were actually good and nobody has shown up. In fact if I remember correctly there is a voice line in NBA 2K14 where Clark Kellogg mentions the very issue that the fans wanted to see some form of a competent team

  5. I hate to be the naysayer here
And perhaps Mrs. Benson is sincere in not wanting to move the team
However, ever notice every great player that ends up in New Orleans leaves as soon as they can Baron Davis? Chris Paul? Anthony Davis? DeMarcus Cousins?

NBA players don’t seem to enjoy being in New Orleans

    Why?

  6. I'm not generally in favor of relocations, and the last three have been awful decisions for the NBA. That said, its not working in New Orleans and Seattle is right there. Moving the Pela to Seattle would solve multiple problems for the league.

  7. Don't care what happens to them, or the entire NBA. Used to be a huge Celtics fan, but since the big three retired, and they moved out of Boston Garden, I just don't care anymore.

  8. The Bensons hate Louisiana and themselves.

Tom loved San Antonio more, Gayle cut his daughter Renee from their will and s(h)its on two sports franchises.

If it weren't for the Holy Trinity of Paul Tagliabue, Sean Payton, and Drew Brees, the Saints would have never returned to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina (2005).

The 40-year marriage between the Bensons and Louisiana is one of conditional love at best and spite at worst.

  9. New Orleans will always be a football first market with the Saints, LSU. Even when the team was good, attendance was still an issue for the Pels.

  10. Move the team to Oakland! They can become the Oakland Pelicans or rebrand to the Oakland Oaks. In the next 5-6 years the Warriors aren't going to have Curry, Green and crew. In theory the Warriors will be at a crossroads. Sounds like a good time for Oakland to get its franchise. They have the arena to start with and the possible new owners could revamp the existing arena or decide to build a new one. Could be a long shot but just an idea to throw out there!

  11. That would be absolutely terrifying

New Orleans is desperate for work

They leave, all those people work in that arena will become Unemployed

    Unreal 🥃🔥

I don’t see anyone bringing this point up ⁉️

  12. I hate when any city loses their team but I'd be stoked if the Sonics came back.

Imagine if New Orleans had a hand in giving back to iconic 90s franchises: the Charlotte Hornets and the Seattle Supersonics!

(Expansion is better though and I hope the Pelicans stay.)

  13. I’ve never been to a home game in New Orleans (full disclosure) but judging by the late crowds who seem disinterested when they finally do arrive yeah don’t see much Pelican spirit … Maybe during the playoffs is the only time when there is energy… They never got the branding right and you don’t see a lot of the Pelican merch in the stands.

  14. My perspective as a New Orleans native: New Orleans is a sports-crazy town; it's just that football is at the top of the heap. They're particularly starved for a winner and the Pelicans just haven't delivered. Nobody in Louisiana has the money to buy an NBA team. The California-based owner moved the Jazz to Utah just to have the team closer to him. The other NBA owners only cared about not sharing liability for breaking the lease. There will not be another arena built because the Smoothie King Center infrastructure is too tightly tied to the Superdome. The arena was expressly built to attract the NBA; once the Hornets came in the minor league hockey team was essentially kicked out.

  15. The team being sold once a 79 year old owner dies? Seems possible it could happen in a few years! So this could happen before you know it.

  16. In case you're wondering why Benson is having the teams sold on her death rather than bequeathing them to heirs, there are none. Tom Benson had a falling out with his adopted daughter and her two children, who ended up disinherited after a nasty legal battle.

  17. First the Jazz, then the Hornets, now the Pelicans. All the great things Louisiana and the city of New Orleans is known for and they came up with the Pelicans? I don't know what was up with Charlotte either. The Bobcats weren't around long at all. "The teams will be sold to the highest bidder." New Orleans should be a one team city. If I were her I'd go out and find a wealthy local person tied to the city (who isn't going to leave) to buy the Saints. I'd let the basketball team go to whoever paid the most. Because they've never had a basketball team there long enough for anyone to get attached to it.

  18. I nearly called again to leave a VM cause of this topic. Anyways this is how it is going to go…

    – Team will state they need arena renovations or a new arena before the lease is up in June 2029.
-NBA says to local city / county / state gov’t that if neither is approved, team will move to Seattle.
-Either city / county / state will approve funding for a new arena or renovate current arena at the 11th hour or special session.
-Seattle again will be played as leverage cause that is what the NBA does.

  19. Move the Clippers first and foremost. We do not want them in SoCal. Put the Clippers in Seattle, Vancouver or Montreal for all we care. Just get them out of California

  20. Seattle already has Climate Pledge Arena, that could be a home, or at least a temporary home while a new building goes up, for an NBA team. How many other cities have an arena of a decent size ready to go for an NBA franchise? It’s time for the Sonics to exist again, if not an expansion team, then a relocation.

  21. Enjoyed this video and enjoy all of your videos, Brodie. Life long resident of the metro New Orleans area. I've been a Saints fan since I was 10 years old. Went to my first Saints game in 1982. Went to the very first New Orleans Hornets game in 2002. Went to the first New Orleans Pelicans game in 2013. New Orleans is a Saints town by far. Second is LSU football. It's a market unlike any other. LSU has such a strong hold on the state that sometimes the Saints come in second to LSU. There are "fans" that go to Saints games just to cheer for LSU alumni on other teams. When the Bengals came here a few years back, I was in the minority in cheering for the Saints defense in the Superdome. It's weird and it's a relatively recent(since Saban was at LSU) thing. Basketball has never really been a draw here. Sure Dale Brown and Shaquille O'Neal drew crowds in the early 90s but other than that LSU basketball has struggled. One thing you said that I agree with is this is a different city from when the Jazz left. The Jazz did OK with attendance in the Superdome when they were here. The owner was set on moving them to Utah. Sorry for rambling but this one hits home. Bottom line is this city will support a winner. When the Pels have been in the playoffs, the Smoothie King Center(agree it's a crappy name) was full and rocking, just like the Superdome gets. The biggest problem is the Front Office is a dumpster fire and fans have checked out because we don't think there is any hope for success in the near future.

  22. nhl is waiting for nba to leave and go into n o. gov wants an nhl team and bettman loves hot ass humid cities. nhl also loves markets with little competition for sports $$$'s from other pro teams. pelicans will look to kc, st.L, or lv.

  23. The Pelicans should look into moving to St. Louis.
St. Louis folks support their teams. Stan Kroenke screwed St. Louis fans when he moved the Rams out of St. Louis.
If St. Louis builds a nice new 22,000 seat arena for the Blues and a prospective NBA team, I think it's a slam dunk the Pelicans move to St. Louis.

  24. The Pelicans should move to LA and change names. The Lakers should move to Salt Lake and become the Salt Lake Lakers and the Jazz should move back to New Orleans.
