The 2015 Hawks became the poster child for “pretenders” after a surprise 60 win season.
Here are the ins and outs of how they were built, what happened during the season, and after.

Atlanta Hawks 2014-15, 60-win season, Budenholzer, four All-Stars.

  1. I lived through this as a diehard hawks fan (I was a freshman in high school) this team was special. Hate that we got swept tho.

  2. Trading Demari Carrol was the worst decision they made. He was the heart of that defense and what they did as a team.

  3. The Hawks are such a weird franchise. Never really bad enough to truly tank or be seen in the same light as poverty franchises like Washington or Charlotte, but even when they're really, really good, never actually serious contenders. They're just there. The team of all time. They exist. Perpetually average.

  4. I still don’t get how that team didn’t go as far as it should. Guess some teams are just meant for regular seasons

  5. I kinda wish the Bulls had been the 4 seed this year. Then Chicago would've beaten the Hawks in 5. So we'd get that Bulls Cavs series as the ECF instead

  6. This is the team LeBron fans swear was a challenge to get by and one of the best in the eastern conference..goes to show how truly terrible LeBrons comp in the east was they definitely earned that nickname leastern conference

  7. "The Face of Pretenders" is crazy considering how many 60 win teams we've seen get knocked out of the first round. They didn't stand a chance against the Cavs but nobody else in the East was making it to that Conference Finals.

  8. I think their whole thing was that they didn’t really have a top guy and that they were a cohesive team but that was also kind of their undoing. They needed a true top guy like Lebron or Curry to win the chip

  9. As a guy who lives near Chicago, liking the hawks at the time made sense. I was a big fan of Captain Kirk, and kyle korver. That 60 win season was spectacular. Team basketball. 4 "all stars". Underdogs of the east, or even called spurs of the east. I absolutely loved the Atlanta Hawks team. Other than those painful playoff runs vs LeBron (who also always destroyed drose bulls 😭 so I have history of beef with lebron) was heartbreaking. 2k should put the 2015 hawks as a historical team to play as.

  10. Bucks only got GA because the ATL assistant that had been training with GA in his basement got fired and was disgruntled so he went to the bucks and told them to draft GA

  11. Idk if I would call them pretenders, they won 2 playoff series and then lost in the conference finals to LeBron

  12. Squad was swept by LeBron and Cavs. We all saw it coming. Your favorite teams in the East were being eliminated by LeBron…

  13. This team got smacked by the Cavs however that doesn't change how much i enjoyed watching them. They were really fun to watch play

  14. I don't think they were pretenders, I think they just had good coach, good system, guys who played their roles accordingly, and guys who were unselfish.

  15. it’s a shame sefolosha had his leg snapped by racist cops which ended the season for their “LeBron stopper”
