Is the Miami Heat’s pace becoming a problem? | Five on the Floor

The Miami Heat have lost four of five. The defense has slipped, and there are some statistics that suggest that pushing pace isn’t working for a lot of other teams at the moment. Ethan Skolnick and Greg Sylvander examine what’s happening, what is actually correlated and what the Heat can do.

  1. The defense is slipping. We are a team, like it or not that is dictated by our offense. When shots are falling, we defend better. It needs to be the other way around. Defend with everything you got and it will open the offense up more.

  2. Seems like pace is starting to hurt their transition defense, seeing a lotta people out of place, which is leading to excessive mismatches. Given that we are already undersized, that gets magnified

  3. Greg I said the same thing a few weeks ago before the slump. That it gave me the Wild cat offense vibe by catching them by surprise, but I didn’t think about if it was sustainable.

  4. Memphis ran the same system and what did it get them, based on their schedule for Dec. and Jan.,by Feb.the Heat will be in play in land or worse, with the present talent and scheme,in my opinion, get some draft capital for Herro and a couple of reserves,to bring in better talent and cap flexibility, upgrade the talent,Go Heat.

  5. I don’t care if we’re not top of the league in pace. We just shouldn’t be bottom. Between 10-15th in pace would be fine, would probably help some struggling players like Jovic, would make Ware a much bigger threat in screen and roll actions.

We just can’t be slow. We’re not an efficient enough offense.

At the end of the day, OKC is cruising to a championship this year. It’s better for us to just figure ourselves out than to gun for a 2nd place trophy.

  6. Betteridge's law of headlines. The answer is no.
There's some adjustments and regression that were always coming. Now that the bench isn't blitzing opponents, the inability to find a consistently good starting lineup is becoming a louder issue.

Asking this after one bad week is absurd. And abandoning Ware-Bam as even a possibility just leads straight to the path of "you have to trade one of them, which means Ware," especially coming off the heels of praising the front office's ability to draft.

The emphasis on spacing matters here too, and we saw the lack of shooting all the way back in preseason. The roster isn't talented enough to be a great team. This is a good Eastern Conference team whatever that means this year. They have to keep building on it and improving. Think the Pacers when they got off to a hot start and then traded for Siakam. Not that such a move will be there. Just that we need to recognize the team as is isn't good enough and that's ok.

  7. Who cares about the vets. None of them are playing at an MVP level. If you’re older than 25 who cares. Just like last year the vets were on the court in the playoffs and Ware was on the bench & they were getting beat down by 55pts. The vets aren’t taking this team anywhere.

This season should exclusively be about developing Ware & Niko. Losing while playing Bam, Wiggins, & Powell the most minutes is such a waste of time
