This is not crazy, teams like expiring contracts, even if the guy goes to prison and can never play a single game, if the trade deal includes picks and other stuff, the contract is a good tool to match the money in the trade and to get a contract that won't bother you long term cause it will soon enough be off your books and it'll free your cap. Teams have been trading for big expiring contracts of players they're not actually interested in for a very long time, this falls into that category. People not understanding this must just be new to how trades work in the nba
