San Antonio Spurs lose in NBA Cup Finals & the silver linings

The Spurs came up short in the 2025 NBA Cup Finals but there are some positives.

San Antonio Spurs fall short in the 2025 NBA Cup Finals against the New York Knicks after a promising run.

Host Jeff Garcia and the AP Sports’ Raul Dominguez break down what went wrong in the decisive fourth quarter, spotlighting Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson’s dominant offensive rebounding and the Spurs’ ice-cold shooting down the stretch. Despite standout efforts from Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, San Antonio’s hot start faded as the Knicks’ experience and physicality took over when it mattered most.

Key topics include Harper’s emergence as a clutch performer, Castle’s relentless defense, and how valuable this Cup run is for the Spurs’ young roster and rookie coach Mitch Johnson.

  1. Worst 4th quarter I’ve seen from Spurs in a long time. Lots of mental errors on defense and ugly offense with minor ball movement. Spurs will bounce back I’m sure. Go Spurs!!!

  2. 2026 Draft prospects: Forward Caleb Wilson 6'10 210 North Carolina, Forward Hannes Steinbach 6'11 225 Washington or Forward Joseph "JoJo" Tugler 6'8 230 Houston.

  3. Harper is very skilled, but he still needs to work on his physical conditioning to add more strength to his agility, which he has in all directions.

  4. It's difficult to win when you're down by more than 12 baskets on the racket and, above all, by nearly 20 rebounds. That's a lot. Perhaps Victor's restrictions played a role in this. Despite this, the Spurs led for most of the game and are very close to the best teams. That said, to win, you almost always need four guys scoring over 20 points, but you also need to work on rebounding to significantly reduce that differential. In particular, by specifically working with young Carter, who seems to have the qualities for this, in addition to being a pretty good shooter.
