Basketball should take a leaf out of other team sports. If a game is tied after regulation, an overtime loss should be worth 1 point.
If a team plays the full 40 minutes (or 48 minutes in the NBA) and it’s still level, they’ve gone toe to toe with the opposition. Losing in overtime after that shouldn’t mean you walk away with nothing.
A fair system would be:
2 points for a win
1 point for an overtime loss
0 points for a regulation loss
The idea that teams would “play for a tie” doesn’t really stack up.
Basketball’s too quick and high-scoring to shut the game down like that, and close games are already full of tactics anyway.
