This NBA Subbing Loophole Is Getting Out Of Hand…

This NBA Subbing Loophole Is Getting Out Of Hand…

NBA coaches are taking substitution gamesmanship to a whole new level, and the Nuggets vs. Hornets gave us the funniest (and most frustrating) example yet. Watch how Hornets coach Charles Lee used a “subbing loophole” to disguise matchups—forcing David Adelman into a timeout while officials scrambled to keep the game moving. We break down the tape with DaRon Holmes II, Zeke Nnaji, Moussa Diabate, and Ryan Kalkbrenner at the center of the chaos, plus why this kind of rule-bending is spreading around the NBA. Sound off: is this genius strategy or the NBA getting out of hand?

  1. Trying to exploit matchups against a team just trying to get five healthy bodies on the court is certainly a choice.

  2. This strategy has been used against Denver a bunch of times now.
Teams can't beat them so they're using cheap tricks to get an advantage.
Ref's should be calling Tech's to stop this, like they have in the past.

  3. Problem with the situation is idiots calling this "genius."
I guess gaming the system is respected as "smart."

  4. Some would call this "gamesmanship", but it leads to more rules to bog down the game. This sort of crud happens in every sport and it drives people away.

  5. I'm really confused by the situation. So Denver was trying to get a favorable matchup, but couldn't. I think I'm missing what the Hornets did dirty. If they allowed Denver to sub and get the last word, why is that fair to the Hornets and why shouldn't they be allowed to respond by subbing again in perpetuity? Game has to start some time. I'm guessing Denver getting spanked bad played into the frustration

  6. Why not spend your energy improving at playing BASKETBALL, instead?

Easy rule change, too. Whoever doesn't have possession gets the last sub. If they jockey for too long, the ref can make a judgement call and give a delay of game tech foul.

  7. I remember back when the NBA was watchable and that a player HAD to go to the scorer's table to check into a game. If your team is that weak that you have to have a certain matchup of certain players, then you probably should hang it up.

  8. They gotta get rules for this. Really not true to the nature of the game to be able to just hide your subs until the last second. Both teams should have to put 5 on the court and give 1 chance to sub out in like a super short time window like 10/20 seconds

  9. It's too much , it is silly, and it's why everyone like ANT. cause he's a real hooper tryna hoop. Everyone else just out there getn money

  10. You can't blame the coaches for trying to win. It's the job of the folks who make the rules and enforce the rules to make changes when things get out of hand.

  11. Probably biased since I'm a Hornets' fan, but aren't they both trying to do the same thing: see which opposing players are on the floor and then adjust your own lineup to get a more favorable matchup?

  12. Coaches having dick measuring contests, players get nights off all the time, everyone plays the same offense, betting scandals galore and somehow its all the fans fault why the games viewership is down.

  13. Easy fix is have coach announce sub to ref at start of quarter and make it a rule that they can't change back. Team with possession has to sub first.

  14. It’s a funny one time thing that is only funny bc it’s the regular season, but it’s also bush-league. I don’t think it should be allowed anymore

  15. If they are having fun then they should do it. Doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

  16. Don't be such a cry baby. There's no loophole. It's a chess match between the coaches. The Hornets won that segment when Denver has to burn a timeout just to fix their matchups
