SPURS POSTCAST: Durant & Rockets ERUPT, Wembanyama & Spurs IMPLODE in another crunch time collapse
Casey Viera and NBA champion Devin Brown recap the Spurs’ 111-106 collapse to the Houston Rockets Tuesday, blowing a 16-point third quarter lead in the defeat.
Victor Wembanyama finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds but shot only 5-21 and missed four shots inside the final two minutes.
Julian Champagnie scored a game-high 27 points for San Antonio (30-14), while De’Aaron Fox added 14 points and five assists. Stephon Castle notched a 13-point, seven-rebound and eight-assist stat line, as the Spurs return to action Thursday in Utah against the Jazz.
Reed Sheppard powered Houston (26-15) with a team-high 21 points, 11 coming in the fourth quarter. Center Alperen Sengun finished an assist shy of a triple double while Kevin Durant added 18 points of his own.

Right on Devin. Run a play, try to break that momentum the Rockets had going. Jacking up so many threes when they obviously weren't falling (other than Julian's). Disappointed but still important lessons for our young team.
So sad they did not maintain the energy. But still love Spurs. Learn from this and get better next coming games. GSG!!!
In the 4th quarter, from 12’00 to 8’46 remaining, the Spurs ONLY SHOT 3s, missed all of them (0/7) and went from 92-82 to 92-91.
Everybody knows that when players are tired, you need to shoot less 3s because 3s require a maximum level of concentration. Apart from a bad night for Vic, addiction to dumb 3s, again (14/50, my God…) destroys what could have been a great win, even with Vic underperforming.
It is not rocket science: in the 3rd and 4th quarters, secure 2s, struggling physical boring 2s , midrange, pick and roll, etc, again and again, and win, or lose by the 3s.
I really hate the heavy reliance on the 3 ball with this team.
Final thought about the Spurs’ lack of humility at 3s: Vic underperformed last night, but the whole team totally failed and collapsed strategically in the 4th. The Spurs believe that they can play like the 2018 Warriors. No they cannot. They are a great team at 2s and just an average team at 3s, and sometimes a poor 3 pts shooting team.
They need to recognize their key strengths and be humble about their true weaknesses.
Teenagers would have had a better strategy in the 4th, relying on midrange 2s, layups, pick and roll with Fox as PG and Vic and Luke scoring, etc.
It’s basic high-school level strategy.
No championship in sight without humility and understanding of your strenghts and weaknesses.
JC is hot for 3, he’s our entire 3 point shooting advantage. Instead of him starting the 4th he’s on the bench and our first 5 or so shots are 3s? Why? Coach gotta coach. He needs to run plays, run pick and rolls. Force pick and roll/ pick and pop offense; these are the players you have.
When offense breaks down or Spurs are leading, they fall back on 3s instead of solid pick and rolls/pop offense. There is no reason we can’t break droughts or build leads with an easy bucket off a play call or style of play; pick and rolls!
This coach needs to control his team. If you don’t want 3s what do you want? If they don’t listen, call timeout, 2 in a row if you have to make a point! Coach gotta coach and control his team. Fox should be playing more than he does (we paid him #1 money) and KJ needs those wasted Bryant minutes. KJ, one of our best most consistent players and he’s getting 10 less minutes than starters to play Bryant!? His stats don’t justify those minutes.
Who is our closer? Mitch you gotta coach. Fox/Wemby pick and roll maybe!? Such a frustrating loss. Bad as Wemby played we controlled the game for 3 quarters and gave it away in the first 4 minutes of the 4th quarter with no answers from the coach. Sickening!
I warned about this same thing…Wemby playsbsoft too often, amd the more he does, the more teams will know all they have to do is play him physically and he won't attack the rim, block shots, nor rebound anymore…he will stick to taking jumpers and hoping the rebounds go to his teammates…this can be fixed by Mitch having wemby go in the low post when they put wing players on him and TELL him to attack the rim (you know…be an actual coach)…if this isn't fixed, Wemby will simply end up being a soft player
That's what you get when you overcelebrate every basket made and lost focus, coach has to control his player
Wemby allowing himself to be shut down by skinny wings needs to be studied…I dont wanna hear that strength bullshit…he can body people when he wants to…he sonned AD and little boyed Capella last night for a dunk…it's a mindset thing and the coaches need to stop being afraid of yelling at Wemby to man up! Run some plays that gets his ass going to the rim, or setting up in the low post!
Dude doesn't even go after rebounds! If it doesn't fall in his lap, he isnt gonna go out of his way to get them…his blocks have fallen off by a LOT not because teams don't try him anymore, but because HE doesn't try anymore…the amout of times players put up a shot in his face that he doesn't even attemp to block is more than I've ever seen…he is 22 and these bad habits need to be cut out before it ends up being who he is the rest of his career
Also…STEPH CASTLE ISNT A POINT GUARD, MITCH! STOP LETTING HIM LEAD THE BREAK, OR RUN THE OFFENSE!
Castle needs to learn to shoot floaters…they simply wait for him at the rim to shoot a layup, and they block it…learn to shoot a floaters when they wall off the rim
Wemby needs to toughen up and call for the ball when they're doing dumb shit…this isnt an equal opportunity league…all championship teams have that guy on their team that you go to
And wemby is a healthy 22 year old…play the fucking guy! Take him off minutes restriction!

outside of JC…terrible from the 3 line! If the Spurs don't put together a package for Markkanen…then I will be DISAPPOINTED BIG TIME!!! He's exactly what we need…a frontcourt running mate with WEMBY! We have the assets to make it happen….expiring contracts(Barnes,Olynik)…young talent Vassell and J.Sochan and a picks package!!!!! Some combination of those players and a picks package should get it DONE!!!! We can't waste a potetnial 2 seed this year! Every year with Wemby is Precious! We have the depth and we're just 1 TALENTED frontcourt piece away!!!! Let's GO SPURS!!!!!!

Truth is this: Spurs have no half court game. If they arent running, they are losing. The only play they have in the half court is give it to Wemby and hope.

Spurs remind me of the mike dantoni rockets live and die by the 3. Good luck with that play style in the playoffs it doesnt work

With out dev on the court we don’t have anyone that is a true go get you a bucket. We go as castle and Wemby go. They can erupt but they are also still figuring out their game and we stall when they do. I would consider shopping Fox and Castle for Ja 👀

chaotic game for castle and wemby but is was impressive. You're not supposed to be close when two of your players are at 5/19 and 5/21.
I don't understand when people saw they are still young and still learning. I would say if you lose a big lead 7 to 10 times going into the 4th quarter i don't think they will learne how to qin these games this year. It always start with the coach and then the best player on team.
