Why everybody does it.
Lakers: Hartenstein fits the mold of a center Luka wants, defensive lob threat. Him and Hayes are similar to lively and gafford, which is what he had on his mavs final run. Him and Austin are similar to him and kyrie. You get some other young players to audition next to Luka.
Con: you take back a lot of long term money but you still have Maxi and Rui expiring. You can use draft assets to offload guys you don’t like with luka. You just need enough room to resign Austin.
OKC : when Jaylen Williams and Chet’s contracts kick in next yr, their salary will be way too high. They will need to cut salary like Celtics. Lebron and Gabe give them easy 63 mill cut. Other contracts are small and easily moveable. They also don’t kill their chances at a repeat title. They get lebron and every player they get in return is only marginally worse than the player they give up.
Cons: they gut their depth , which makes their chemistry off for a repeat run. Ideally they would like to not lose draft assets , but actually get assets in return for selling these guys. But doing it that way, other teams know they need to shed salary, and they have to do multiple moves.
I’m not a fan of this trading Rui it don’t move the needle Rui is better 3pt shooter and scorer maybe or maybe not but Hunter is better defensively if we don’t have to give up picks than maybe

If they give up rui instead of vando they basically destroy half there cap space for next season. If this move is done it’s obvious Mark Walter doesn’t yet have authority.

Giving up a Rui 44% 3pt shooter for Hunter is crazy. Rui is one of my favorite Lakers and trading him for Hunter is so pointless and disappointing. I understand if we need to trade him but he is more valuable then that.

I'd rather try to swing for the fences Rui, Ayton, Gabe, Kleber + a first for Kat & a 2cd or If I'm trading Rui it's for Wiggins or at the least someone with Kuminga's upside. We know what Hunters ceiling is. Knicks would need a 3rd team to unload Gabe + Kleber that's looking for cap relief. There has to be more and I'd accept if we got a Sharpe. However, I actually think straight up Hunter for Rui is a downgrade. Hunter might be better overall (debatable) but Rui is a better fit. Both are roughly the same size/build with a 7'2 wingspan who don't rebound well.
Hunter might be better individually defensively against wings but both are slow footed point of attack defenders which is what LA needs. Additionally, Hunter has been abysmal from 3 this year and a poor defender the past few. If he cannot defend with a culture like Cleveland then he definitely isn't stepping up with LA. With Hunter you're getting an empty calorie scorer, inefficient overall, not reliable on 3 and takes bad shots.
A guy like Wiggins, who is a winner, reliable from 3, a decent point of attack and still very good individuall defender with a higher basketball IQ is a considerably better swap.
swap James for Rui and do the trade. Rui is the replacement player we need when James retires or moves on, and he is the best 3 point shooter on the team, which three point shooting is a weakness. This projected trade makes no sense, unless there is something else in the making. Maybe a draft pick comes back to to the lakers

This trade by itself is bad. If you add other players, then it’s a different trade.
Hunter is a far worse shooter than Rui with only slightly better defense (he is not a good defender). He's also slightly older. Gonna need a lot more, as you said, to make this sensible.
In a few months we will say these again “RUI is the exact player the Lakers need now” and “We need to trade for a shooter like KNECT”

Hunter would be perfect. I have been completely against any trades until the summer, and I think the front office has been as well. But Hunter is a different story because he is exactly what the Lakers will be looking for in the summer.. If they can get him for an unprotected first round pick and a swap they should do it.

It's sad Rui 's inability to defend will get him traded, he is the only player in the NBA who is built like Kawhi Leonard and his offence is almost the same but his sence of awareness and foot speed especially in defence is pathetic!!
