How The OKC Thunder Quietly Robbed The NBA At The Trade Deadline

The NBA trade deadline is over and if there are still questions about the OKC Thunder and their chances to repeat as champions, those might all have been erased after the Thunder traded for Jared McCain to solidify their claim to an NBA dynasty. Now, the Thunder add another piece to complement their big three of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren. There were big names that were traded such as James Harden and Darius Garland being involved in a trade by the Cavs and Clippers. Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz traded for Jaren Jackson Jr. Aside from the Thunder trade for Jared McCain, those trades by the Clippers and Jazz might have also helped OKC win the trade deadline. With the Clippers looking to slide after trading Harden, the Thunder just might have increased their chance to land another lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Meanwhile while the Jazz are bound to get better by pairing Jaren Jackson Jr. with Lauri Markkanen, the Thunder are also about to benefit because the Jazz pick will be received by OKC if it falls outside of the top 8 in the draft lottery.

Jared McCain is a solid guard who was on his way to winning the Rookie of the year award last season before he got hurt. Now, he will have a chance to prove himself as part of the defending champions. Meanwhile, Sam Presti has once again proven that patience could pay off for the Thunder franchise. By not using the accumulated stockpile of draft picks that OKC has for players like Giannis or Lauri Markkanen, the Thunder were able to take advantage of small opportunities such as the Jared McCain trade, and all they had to give up to land him was one first round pick and a couple second rounders. The OKC Thunder just might have quietly won the NBA trade deadline by doing very little. Now, they look primed to once again reach the NBA finals against teams like Jokic and the Nuggets, Luka Doncic and the Lakers, and Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs.
