Full Miami Heat deadline recap: It really was Giannis or nothing | Five on the Floor

As he has for the prior three seasons, Ethan Skolnick digs deeper into what really happened — and didn’t — at the trade deadline, after a couple of days to report and reflect. And it really was just about one player this time. Greg Sylvander joins.

  1. Yes, we know. They’ve been doing this over and over for years. No one is surprised. No one thinks they had all these sophisticated ideas that all fell apart.

When Giannis came off the block, GSW and Minnesota immediately pivoted to smaller moves that they thought helped them. We did nothing. No one is confused about them not having a back up plan.

We know this team and the front office suck. It’s only the people closest to the team that have trouble seeing this.

  2. They never got Jimmy any real help saying the same thing. Sadly, they’ve become a delusional cult with no new or fresh ideas

  3. Why they paid Jovic so soon? The front office needs to decide if they want to play their young core or win…

  4. Why was Bam the stopping point for a Gannis trade? This thinking is why we will remain mediocre. Bam should not be Untouchable!!!!

  5. You keep saying "this is their process", "this is their way of doing things", it's time to start calling those out as the BS they are.
This organisation isn't any better than other teams when it comes to building a winning roster, they don't have the "secret sauce" or "magic touch". Their success in the past was primarily due to Wade who was a top 5 pick and now they refuse to go that way again, they think Bam is on Dwyane's level because he is popular but turn a blind eye to the fact that every other player sees Bam's flawed game and realise how much carrying they will have to do.
Players aren't desperate enough to play with Bam to go nuclear or wait till free agency and then even in the off chance they do, THAT IS NOT HOW THE LEAGUE WORKS ANY MORE (Damian Lillard situation). They are blinded by their own past and refuse to admit that the rest of the league has moved past them.

And yet, the media constantly cycles the "trade Herro, trade Wiggins, do we trade Powell? extend Powell because he is a "Heat guy" (does that just mean a good but not great player nowadays??)" narratives instead of pointing out the glaring faults of this organisation.
    1. Never giving yourself even a SHOT at a top 5 pick means you always be reliant on other franchises failing or being willing to deal with you so essentially you never have any control in getting high end talent.
    2. Not selling assets EVER, even if its for a diminished package means you will always be playing catch up because there will always be an organisation that is willing to be more aggressive than you.
    3. Bam, at 29, on $50mill, with his inconsistencies, in this organisations situation, is a problem, not a solution at this point of his career. Now if you bottomed out and had a high end guy on a rookie scale deal, that would be the way to make it work but see point one, "they don't do that".

Until the media start acknowledging these things REPEATEDLY, not just on once a year podcasts or columns they will never feel a reason to change and until they decide to change these things this team will always be what it is, a purgatory team with no future.

  6. I’m so tired of being explained the same fucking thing every pod, we get it Ethan they tried to get Giannis and The Bucks were never serious . Same shit , different day 😊

  7. I actually agree that you can’t just have a bunch of kids running the show and that having a guy like Norm/Wigs/Davion is good even in a youth movement.

But what the fuck are we talking about here? They wanted to trade the youth movement for Giannis, and they don’t play the youth enough for it to be a movement. They are talking out both sides of their mouths.

It should have been go for Giannis, if you can’t get him trade Bam for picks (since no one is offering picks for Norm or Wigs) to strengthen the youth movement. A direction should have been picked.

You want me to watch this same team again next year? In the same place with not enough assets to land a star? With the youth getting pulled off the floor, lessening their value? Getting weak draft position so that we can have the thrill of getting throttled in the first round of the playoffs?

  8. As long as the Heat evaluate a role player as the most important piece they will block themselves from being successful. I guess 2 seasons of data isn’t enough

  9. 1. If Giannis wanted to be in Miami with Bam, he’d be here. Stop blaming the Bucks

    2. Yes you want vets playing WITH young guys. But how is DNPs & random minutes for Jovic & 9 minutes for Ware PLAYING WITH THEM? Come on Ethan

  10. This front office traded for rozier an expiring and send a pick to the hornets, traded Highsmith with a second, send Hassan out with a pick, need I continue. This roster that seats 15 in the league is 10th in salaries paid, though one of the worst most boring products in the league, what are the 5 teams above ours that are paying less yet higher in the standings. How can this be called a great group of professionals when the last 4 years have been misery. Same as the years after LeBron.

I heard Jason Timpf say “I pity Heat fans”, heard Zack Lowe and bill simmons say something similar.

Can’t have it both ways, I always said I would understand if the owner wants to cash in on the team and nothing else. It is his team, he pays the salaries. What you cannot do is come out and say this SHITTY product is built to compete.

  11. Out front office after the rozier debacle gave Caleb Martin a large offer, his agent saved us from that one. Mediocrity is highly rewarded here, lifetime appointments.

They’re bad at this, the roster today is a reflection of their 😅incompetence. No state tax, and Miami as an attractive destination, yet these morons have the 10th highest paid roster operating and performing like a bottom 10.

  12. He didn’t want to leave, they weren’t going to trade him. Another psyop by them
