The Toronto Raptors have solved basketball | Moneyball in 2026
The Toronto Raptors are using numbers and systems to generate wins. Yes, the team still lacks a perceptive ‘superstar’ but their approach to the draft and the entire strategy the past 6 months under new head hancho Bobby Webster leads me to believe the Raptors are taking a value approach to investing in stocks with underlying potential that are perceived to be less valuable due to cosmetic defects. The whole thing reminds me of the famous baseball film Moneyball.

They traded Mathurin because they wouldn't be able to afford his extension with Pascal and Halliburton on payroll. He's a killer, you may be bias.
Thumbnail goes crazy! Good job
they love bPM
Yo just watched this as soon I as woke up. I have a question for you pen, when we waive Chris Paul can we get cam thomas or is there anyone else on the free agency market you would rather have
In Moneyball, one of the scouts refused to consider a player because his girlfriend was ugly. The take was a player, having an ugly girlfriend, has no confidence in himself.
Interesting bias.
Great video, love the analytics perspective. Apparently Jakob could be back by the all star break, that 3pt boost on it's way. Imagine that from no centers to having two people who actually play the position
Ya I've watched a lot of video on his shot. The form is pretty decent I can see him being able to hit long mid range shots doesnt need a ton work mabe some tweaks. I think your right he should just sneak a few in a game might surprise some people.
But cooper flagg is better than scottie.
44:55 – I think it's the potential of an offensive rebound, from an established player, that brings calmness for the shooters.
As crazy as this might sound, I wouldn't mind testing out a crazy lineup like
Scottie/Ingram/CMB/TJD/Jakob,
Run "proper plays" but let them shoot 3s if they're wide open, and be a demons on the offensive glass. because offensive rebounds allow you to reset in a scramble, and I think the movement patterns fall in line.
On defence, 2 of Scottie, CMB, Ingram can start on the perimeter, with the 3rd person roving in the middle. If it's CMB or Scottie in the middle, it allows to the perimeter to be ultra aggressive.
Jakob and TJD can start down low.
Great content Pen, exactly something I’m looking for. I also think this has the potential to be a great pick-up and since the trade I’ve been thinking a lot about how good TJD and Mamu are going to fit together. Best case scenario for this year is that he does fit alongside Mamu and can give the Raptors 15-20min off the bench. If that happens, the Raptors are instantly a much bigger and deeper team – he’ll be eating some of those minutes that they previously had to fill with undersized guards/wings.
I noticed TJD shooting form he starts off on the right side and moves quickly to the left on his release.
Hold up @ Pensare , Jamal Magloire was an all-star bro, no way that Davis is a better player
We have four lefties on this team that's unheard of i think
Great work!
I think that's what mogbo in his game, imagination and subsequently creativity. Need to see more street ball, Michael Jordan film over and over. Praise and compare potential. MJ for his creativity and can do attitude.
I just took a look at traces jumper it actually looks alright low-key has my hopes up there are some issues but there’s a chance he can stretch for us and if that the case then this is a genius move from bobby
+Bobby = Implied Vet Captain CP33 iz still a possibility!! 🚨 who also had great on-court chemistry w/ pedigree TDJ @GSW – whose fav team conversationalist was Wiggins🇨🇦 👀 (FA option July 2026)
Nice analysis. The reality like you said is probably somewhere between the stats and the eye test
The more I watch this TJD the more I like this move.
Right age for Scottie timeline
Finally a lob threat. Literally opens another dimension for Scottie to play make in. Also a guy that can rebound block and get put backs
And a guy that doesn't replace Scottie and CMB but RELIEVES them and allows them to defend more appropriate positions
Under rated move for sure as always thanks for your analysis Rob great job through trade season!
Rob can you please point out that the Raps let Masai go and really haven’t changed anything to the team he assembled?!?! Happy Black History Month
We’re a team full of dogs and I love it. Thanks for the analysis, gonna keep my eye out on this dude
When I heard we got him for a second round pick, I immediately knew we won the trade. Then I heard it’s not even our own. We fleeced the Warriors on this one
Hey Rob, I'm not a great fan of Bobby either, but what I do think of him, is that I think he's kind of the "long investor" type of guy who wants to see an investment through, aka the team/players through. What I saw this past trade deadline is just everybody trying to daytrade whatever the mess they think they are in or actually in. Most of these I mean, they don't really help the team and are just trading for the sake of trading (aka the warriors with kristaps, whatever the fk bulls are doing, or the kings). So I think that part I actually appreciate, that we didn't try to "daytrade" anything that'll ultimately hurt the team later. Would u agree like this was a better trade deadline that the raps have had in awhile or no?
Agreed. TJD’s 'non-shooter' label is a myth! He’s only taken 5 NBA 3s total, but he’s already1/1 100% this season after that Heat buzzer-beater! 🔥 College stats show 0% from deep, but at the Combine, he flashed 48% in 3PT drills. Over 90% of his career shots have come from within 5 feet of the basket. He was boxed in by the Splash Bros system at GSW—expect the Raptors to finally unlock that hidden mid-range & perimeter game! 💎
You're a savant Rob. Do you have anything BUT basketball in your brain?
We're sixth in the east with a bunch of slightly above average players, horrible shooting, no size., and albatross contracts. You've lost me with this one.
IDK, mathurin is a great player. Pacers moved off of him for two far more obvious reasons; he's gonna get paid (and Pacers don't have the budget), and the hole left by Turner still needs to be filled for next season when the Pacers feel they have another shot. Mathurin is solid and will become even better, but with Hali, Nembhard, Toppin, and Nesmith under contract with some overlap in roles plus spicy P, Pacers needed to figure out the roster that's it.
I’m really happy for TJD that he’s finally on a team where he can get run and I really enjoyed watching his first game with the Raptors.
But this video makes me ill with how much of this information wasn’t shared with GSW fans. Some of us would be complaining about him not getting utilized, especially because in small ball, TJD is perfect as a center who sprints the floor and can spam PNR, and then have to hear local media inferring stupid things about him not being ready or not fitting into a system with Steph was aggravating.
I’m really glad that your analysis highlights how quick and high IQ TJD is, but it honestly makes me even more disappointed and disgusted in my home team of decades.
Question: in your opinion, has TJD developed at all since his college days?
Kerr is terrible at development, so I have this theory that most young players under him that have any improvement whatsoever are self-motivated or even highly motivated, but lacking sufficient guidance, so they can only get so far on their own or with the GSW development staff.
And since most of them can’t get enough time on the floor, they really have to work hard to get better in that system.
I definitely see improvement in TJD from year 1 to now, but I’ve only seen a little of his performance in college, so it’s hard for me to tell definitively.
i have 2000 to 1 odds on a parlay Oilers win Stanley cup and raptors NBA Championship 500 pays 1 million parlay. I will take the buy out if each team gets deep. Im thinking if they both run deep ill get a buyout of close to 100 000
