One thing about the NFL, I don’t hear about teams tanking in the first 2 months of the season. NBA teams literally don’t even try if they don’t think they’re ready to compete. They’re tanking in November.
Change it to the best team to not make playoffs has the best opportunity to procure the 1st pick
Simple solution. If you have the worst record you get the 32nd pick (first round only). Everyone else keeps their same spot moved up by 1 pick. Make it some sort of landmine where the bad teams still get high picks, but you don't want to be the worst team because you go to the end of the 1st round.
You have to REWARD Winning not losing – Teams that don't make the playoffs but have the best records should get better lottery positions
I think that an auction draft would be an interesting alternative. Might be a terrible idea when impulsive owners keep blowing their entire allotment in the first round
This is not a problem . Teams are terrible at drafting. Proof, what first round pick has won superbowl ?
I fail to see how teams.tanking has affected the NFL negatively.
Ratings.up, revenue up.
Go back to the past 30+ number 1 draft picks.. the #1 pick isnt a guarantee a team will turn around.
Instead of trying to create drama,.present some facts that show the NFL has been damaged by teams tanking
Lots of static coming through Michael's mic
"Tank for Tua", "Tank for Jameis", Tanks a lot.
NFL tanking? We got the browns beating the Steelers in week 17, dolphins beating the Bucs. Doesn’t feel like it even exists
This man keeps saying the Colts tanked to get Luck when the Colts beat winning teams fighting for the playoffs back to back late in the season.
Dont watch NBA games any more….last few years, had enough of BUYOUT a player…team pays guy millions of dollars to leave and go another team
Establish an independent Draft Committee. They release the draft order 1 week after the superbowl. The order is determined largely by EPA and other relevant metrics, but not wins.
Good start. Let me know when they start fining for flopping.
No fan cares about tanking in the NFL because it’s so minor and limited compared to the NBA. It’s not a problem, don’t create fake outrage.
Maxx Crosby just had knee surgery. If he would have ruined his knee worse you would be talking about that. Leave the Raiders alone.
Props to Mike, as soon as he said he couldn't think of a successful example of tanking, I thought of the Houston Rockets. But as he then astutely pointed out after he cited the same example, they didn't win their two championships for 10 years. However, they did get into the NBA Finals the year after tanking
and yet teams like the lakers sat all their starters vs the spurs the other night and do nothing! did either one of them watch the raiders this season? they were by far the worst team in the nfl
as much as I cant stand the modern NBA and think its unwatchable, tanking has always been something teams have done and theres really no stopping it. especially when the team has absolutely no chance. the league is just horrible to watch now.
It’s an easy fix not to tank. If you lose, you draft last. Like I need to see a good college player get selected first and then get destroyed by a bad team.
I think fining a team out of nowhere with no precedent, no warning when there’s a system where they have no other way to become truly competitive is despicable. Until they create a better system, you have accept that incentive based decisions are normal.
Tanking in the NBA is quite easy to fix. Any team that doesn’t make the playoffs has the exact same lottery odds to get the #1 overall pick. So the incentive to lose the most games goes away when your odds of getting the overall pick are the same as the team that barely missed the playoffs.
Im sorry but bring back miles.
As a European, I will never understand why the leagues reward mediocrity. If you are the worst team your reward is the number 1 pick. Doesn’t make sense to me.
lol looks and sounds crazy hearing Mike F. talking about round ball to me🤦🏿♂️🤷🏿💪🏿
Aye big dog, it works. The spurs tanked for tim and won 5. Okc tanked and just won. I could keep going but ill just stop here.
Another thing that's interesting about the Jazz' tanking strategy is they aren't sitting guys for multiple games like most tanking teams have done. Instead, they have been playing their starters for 3 quarters, so they continue to grow and gel together, and are actively engaged in competition, and then they put the rookies and young players in for the 4th quarter, which helps them develop, especially in close games in crunch time. So, again, I hate that tanking is an actual strategy to build your roster, but I'm also not dense, and realize that small market teams have no choice if they want to actually win a championship.
Punish the worst teams rather than reward them, that‘ll stop rhe tanking.
Lottery doesn't work
Taking Doesn't work in the n b a , the only way to get a number one pick is to trade away your star secretly to the lakers
They fined them a significant amount , l o l they pay players a million dollars a game now florio
The lottery is fixed, and everybody knows it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unlike the NBA the NFL wants bad teams to have a chance. The NBA there are 20 teams that have never won a championship
The raiders 😅tanked and it was still the second most watched super bowl ever doesn't sound like much of a problem to me
The falcons usually win a lot of games toward the end of the season. It hasn't really helped them. Though, I often have wondered if the falcons really try to win.
The OKC literally just won the NBA finals. C’mon.
How many championships did the Spurs win with Duncan?
When individual players tank, they get rewarded with federal charges. When entire organizations tank, they get rewarded with generational players. Sounds about right . . .
You all know what the Jazz are doing is playing in the rules the NBA created. The league is soft and corrupt, wanting fingers pointed at teams rather than themselves. You in the media are weak by denying the real problem. C'mon, grow a pair!
82 games isnt too many NBA players are wimps who miss games when they stub finger/toe NHL players play a much more physical game and NHL players play when healthy the only exception is if the team has secured a playoff spot they might sit a couple players for the last 1 or 2 games of the season which is no different then what the NFL does
The only obvious tanking i can think of for the NHL in recent memory is the buffalo sabres in the 14-15 when they were blatantly tanking for mcdavid by trading away any player that was playing well
Auction Draft
Here is my idea…
The bottom 3rd of the league or all non playoff teams all get put into a draw.. or whatever we decide to call it. All the teams get put on a list and it’s basically a waiver wire at that point… Teams and players have to agree on terms in order to get drafted. Worst record gets first pick and so on… The main thing is the draftees must sign and to agree on where they want to go. If you’re so bad and none of the players opt into go to Sacramento or Charlotte.. you either get who you can convince, might not necessarily be the top picks or who you wanted.. but you get you get.. If no one decides to go, you drop to the bottom of the list.. It punishes bad roster construction and makes even the worst teams try to be somewhat attractive to these rookies.
As a Soccer fan, without a pro – rel system it’s very hard to punish tanking, it will always be a problem. Especially in a star driven league like the NBA. But this mitigates it to a certain level. Your problem would be the teams fighting to stay out of the playoffs. Once the picks have been turned in and agreed, it goes back to a normal draft for the rest of the picks.
There’s no point for the NFL to implement a draft lottery because, as shown with the NBA, it doesn’t even disincentivize tanking. The difference is that NFL teams don’t start tanking as soon as the season starts, unlike NBA teams.
Florio & Holley 🦾
The whole NBA is a joke
Thanks for bringing this up guys
Help me out please to understand why is there a draft? Seems if you get rid of drafting players and just hire them there would be no incentive to tank. There's a salary cap to control spending so go recruit players to be on your team — right?
How dare a team try to get out of limbo by losing games that don’t matter anyway. This whole tank thing is such a stupid argument. Don’t why people seem to forget that bad teams are apart of the process. Cowboys were garbage before we won the 3 superbowls in the 90s.
not getting close to the end of the season more like half way through 82 games. Florio has a brain made of flouride.
In the NFL, rarely does a single player turn a team around immediately. There are too many players. A great QB is useless without an OL and WRs. In the NBA, with 5 players on a team, it’s much easier for one player to be dominant.
As for Utah, they have a top 8 protected 1st round pick in 2026; else it goes to OKC.
