Would YOU Draft Darryn Peterson OR Trade Down If The Mavericks Won The Lottery? | DLLS Mavs Podcast

If the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery, would you draft Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer or AJ Dybantsa to pair with rookie phenom Cooper Flagg? Or would you trade down and acquire future draft assets? We give our takes on the best move for the Mavericks. Plus, we discuss why trading down in this year’s draft is different than trading down in last year’s draft, potential fits with Cooper Flagg, and what types of players you would want to surround a Cooper Flagg- AJ Dybantsa duo.

  1. When you say there are so many good guys, how many? Are you saying all the top 5 guys are equally as good? If that’s the case then may be I’ll trade that first pick back to 4 or 5 and get a 1 st round pick next year.

  2. If we land another top 5 pick keep it. The other 2 picks will be good enough to add a quality player or two

  3. So in this draft where the comps for the top 5 picks are Brandon Roy(Peterson), T-Mac(AJ) Jermaine O'Neal (Caleb) you keep the pick. And try to trade PJ and Gafford for additional picks and keep building. But if OKC offered 8 picks, maybe wonder if the team that knows what they are doing, knows what they are doing and keep it.

  4. No… If there are 5 top guys, all close, you trade down. Duh. If you get the 3rd or 4th pick…you probably stay there…

  5. You do it from the sole fact you are drafting someone to SUPPORT Flagg in the future. Not a player competing for minutes/touches. Or views themselves as franchise players a team builds around which is the reality for all top 3 picks in ego. Nothing against them but that is the nature of this competive sport. Somehow if the Mavs get a top 3 pick then A) Trade pick for a young(no older than 28 years old) All Star/Superstar now with Picks tied into said package or B) Trade down to the 5 or 6 spots get your man with a package of picks along with it.

In Option A, I would do a deal for only Giannis or Jaylen Brown as player over 28 years old.

  6. On God if they get #1 again they better trade down. Someone will give up a haul that will allow us to really build a team, organically… BUT I'm still probably not moving out beyond 3, maybe 4. Would have to be a HAUL.

This would be an incredible dilemma to have regardless lol
