The San Antonio Spurs are building around Victor Wembanyama in a way that could define the next five years of the NBA. In the new second-apron era, roster construction and smart cap management matter more than ever — and San Antonio looks ahead of the league, rivalring Oklahoma City Thunder. Here’s how the Spurs structured their team to stay competitive, flexible, and potentially dominant long term.

  2. I think there is a very real possibility of Wemby taking a pay cut like Tim Duncan did to keep the core they have going. He has trust in the org, wants to stay on SAS, and has mentioned before he doesnt care about money as much as he does about winning.

  3. The only thing that makes me feel bad about this "new Spurs" is the Jeremy Sohan situation… The rest, it is GLORIOUS to watch. Go Spurs, go!

  4. Am I trippin 🤷‍♂️ I hear all this Wimby talk I've seen him play and I dont get it. He's tall 🤷‍♂️ SO WHAT he seems overrated. He dominates because of his height not power, not skill or talent. All he has to do is be on the court There's no skill in that.

  5. This is how I imagine the plan is:
Fox has another 3 years on his contract. He will be released then if not before, and Harper will fill his role as creator.
That will free up much of the budget, to keep the rest of the core together.

Or maybe Fox stays on lower wages. He is great, and I love how he plays, but he is not max contract great, at least in this system, and certainly not after his prime. (28yo right now)

  6. There are no guarantees in the modern NBA as far as teams maintaining dominance, but I agree 100% with this video. So if Wemby stays healthy, the Spurs have as good a chance as anyone, probably the best over a five year period. Spurs v Thunder could be a tough rivalry for years though.

  7. That being said, they could had a discount in Fox contract… max him out like that was a smart move… 260mi garantee for 5 seasons… idk about that… I think 220mi was enough… not that he doesn't deserve it, but you gonna have to pay Wemby and Castle… when they max out together someone will have to go…

  8. It's not that the spurs kept finding underrated players. It's simply cause the spurs play team basketball which allows less talented players to play better than who they really are.

Players that came from the spurs that went to bad teams were bad.

Current spurs is successful cause their superstar doesn't need the ball to dominate games. Allowing more touches for everyone else.

Imagine having lebron or Luka on this spurs team. Castle, fox and harper would be relegated to 3 and d players who have to play defense 4v5.

  9. The Spurs have been stocking up on pick swaps to increase their chances of getting quality players in the draft.

This is a huge difference from the Duncan era when they were content to draft and stash with late 1st round picks.

I expect them to eventually trade Fox and Vassell for role players and picks once Castle and Harper and maybe Bryant are ready to start.

  10. They cheated and got lucky. Other teams tank for longer and dont get a single top 4 pick, the Spurs got 3 in a row. Some teams have been legitimately bad forever and NEVER had a top pick. Spurs deliberately threw games to get Duncan and Wemby, and they got Robinson at #1 in the lottery despite having only the 4th fewest wins. The Jazz have had one top 5 pick in the past 10 years. The Nets 1 top 16 pick in the past 15 years.

  11. Simply put, you can't have inefficient empty-calories type players, that cost a lot of $$$. LeBron is a great example

  12. What I never understood is NBA players prioritizing 200m over 150m. Why do you need the extra 50m for? Isn't 150 enough?
