CAVS POSTCAST: Cleveland Cavaliers IMPLODE In 4th Quarter vs the Detroit Pistons

The Cleveland Cavaliers fell 122–119 in overtime to the Detroit Pistons in a heartbreaking loss that slipped away in the final seconds of regulation. Playing without James Harden and Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland appeared to have the game sealed before Jaylon Tyson committed a costly foul with four seconds left, sending Detroit to the line for three free throws to force overtime. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen dominated inside and carried the Cavs for much of the night, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome the late mistake and finish the job in OT.

  1. Refs were criminal tonight. Allen CLEAN BLOCK for his 6th foul we would had ball up 3 but nope and Cavs could not challenge since refs already blew 2 calls they had to challenge and won. Schroder got smoked on the final play no call of course. Sorry refs blew.

  2. The pacers series and this shows that atkinson is clueless in games dwn the stretch the foul game you up 3 with 6.5 seconds why foul at all….

  3. How many times did Kenny need to throw a banged up Dennis Schroder to the wolves for the last four minutes of regulation before BRINGING IN ANOTHER FUCKING BALL HANDLER? Porter was fantastic all night. Kenny also blew the close game against the Bucks by benching Wade for the last five minutes..and Milwaukee proceeded to waltz into the lane for 6 straight possessions.

  4. Mobley was great??? Come on he had good game but come on let’s not over do it. Dude had several chances to close the game out and he choked

  5. THANK YOU CAVS FOR A PLAYOFF TYPE GAME! WE
NEEDED SOME COMPETITION CONSIDERING HARDEN AND MITCHELL DIDN'T WANT NO SMOKE 🗣️💨 SO THE BOTH CAN TRY AND FOR 50 TOMORROW AFTERNOON AGAINST THE NETS. SOFT AS A CROISSANT 🥐! DETROIT VS EVERYBODY!!

  6. Yes…moral victories don’t count so I’m not going to argue that “nearly” winning this game is a good thing. I’ll just say it: This game practically proves that the Cavs are the better team. That’s my main takeaway.

The defense held up despite clearly being compromised with the injuries tonight. Harden and Mitchell being injured gave Cade two options( Merrill, Schroeder) to post up and score on at will. Add that Dean Wade was injured and Cade had a really easy matchup. Cade had a very good and easy game until he fouled out. Tobias had matchup advantages that forced Cleveland to help and with Harden guarding Tobias, none of that would’ve happened.

The bench was worse. Craig Porter jr is an exploitable mismatch on defense because of his size against this team and shoutout Tyrese Procter but he isn’t there yet . Tomlin being replaced by Dean Wade minutes is a clear plus.

And this is all on defense. On offense you can imagine what a difference having Harden instead of Schroeder or Mitchell instead of those bench minutes would’ve made. Shoutout to Schroeder because he put it all out on the court this game.
I can tell you how much of a difference it would’ve made: Schroeder shot 4/15 and 2/2 from the line with 8 turnovers. And he played as well as he could’ve in his role. Replace that with Harden.

Keon Ellis wouldn’t have had a great matchup on Cade or any wing but in the non-Cade minutes he could’ve caused real havoc. I’m not even counting him in in the reasons the Cavs are better than the Pistons because unlike Dean Wade or Mitchell/Harden, Keon had more room to be a negative in this matchup. But Keon playing instead of Procter would’ve helped for sure.

The Pistons could’ve been better on defense, especially with their rim protection because Steward was out but the Pistons played a pretty good game albeit with some poor shooting luck and seemed to be generating the same quality shots as the injured Cavs and generally playing as equals to the Cavs.

Ausar had several good counters to Mobley guarding him, Duren was great, Cade was great and those are the main 3 players that are either stars that need to be guarded well or players that teams build their defense around. The Cavs simply played a great defensive game with their personnel and it led to the Pistons not generating too many good shots.

It seems pretty obvious that the refs screwed the Cavs over which is a big reason they lost tonight but in the long-term, I think this game is pretty convincing evidence that the Cavs are probably the better team by a fairly clear margin when healthy.
