Unfortunately, this defeat reflects more the current playoff level of SA than a winning streak mostly against poor or average teams. The Spurs’ defense is fine. But as soon as the Spurs face a team that don’t allow them to have open 3s, like the Knicks, the Spurs look pretty weak offensively, apart from Wemby, Castle, Harper and Vassell right now when they do not shoot too many dumb 3s. Against NY and most other playoff teams, without a strong PF who is able to score and take offensive rebounds, the probability that the Spurs go beyond the 2nd round is low. They rely way too much on lazy 3s, like Fox. If they want to make a deep playoff run, they need to find a strategy to cap their 3s and find more efficient ways to score 2 pts shots, especially Fox, Champagnie and Barnes. And, of course, against tough opponents like NY, it’s very strange that Mitch does not make Wemby and Kornet play together. In any case, I don’t see how the Spurs can win any championship in the future without a strong PF like Moussa Diabaté, Maxime Raynaud or another strong PF/Center.
Couple things I notice are consistent issues in losses and some wins:
1. Sloppy, lazy, unfocused turnovers. Vic is a large part of this. SLOW DOWN ! His fast break dribbling it’s like he has tunnel vision and isn’t paying attention around him. He ends up getting stripped going coast to coast trying to make a move and falls over, turnover. You’re not giannis…yet. It’s year 3, gotta work in the summer on being more coordinated with footwork, develop a go to move and have a body built for physicality in the paint.
2. Harrison Barnes is good for one game a week, maybe. More minutes for Carter Bryant.
3. What’s Vic go to move ? When they struggle to score what set do you go to for the big guy to either get him going when they’re bumping and pushing him off his spots ? Where are the lobs/slip screens/flash screens to get him close to the rim. Hes not a mis match on offense yet. He should be near the rim and put his hand up. Tallest player on the court chucking 3s when he’s struggled the last few weeks. There’s no easy shots. I see guys look him off too….
4. Is it fox or castle as the main ball handler in pick n roll? Fox takes tough shots bc he’s not in rhythm, castle can’t shoot well outside so it’s rim pressures but tends to fall in love with contested fall aways/tough shots as well.
5. Offensive rebounding by opponents leading to their biggest weakness: defending the 3. They don’t finish stops with rebounds. Teams that give the spurs issues are teams that are scrappy, hustle for loose balls for extra possessions and physical. It’s one loss but in the playoffs this is what’s it’s like every game.
Victor’s 7 turnovers and 1 for 6 from three doomed us. That’s 12 poor basketball IQ possessions that he murdered. Fox (overpaid) and Castle are inconsistent from 3.
Chen Julian drives, i know something bad will happen…he should stop doing that…Carter Bryant needs Barnes' minutes
What’s up with fans. Win we love them.. a bad night we hate them…sheesh
We need to let Fox be the leader of the team , letting everyone eat works when winning against bad teams or when hitting every shot but when things get tough you need basics with one guy in control of the ball
Knicks fan here. Our stretch over the next week started with you today. We needed a great start to the week for sure and got it but your team is feared by many. A really good team hopefully for years to come. Take out anger on Philly on Tuesday. Great review.
Knicks fan here got nothing but respect to you guys see yall in June!🤝🤝
2026 Spurs draft prospects: F Morez Johnson Jr 6'10 255 Michigan, F Chris Cenac Jr 6'11 240 Houston or C/F Rueben Chinyelu 6'10 265 Florida.
Our Spurs are a young team. We learn and we move on. Go Spurs Go!!
The guys are tiref
Man I hate 12 o clock games, when the cowboys and Spurs play at 12 it seems like it's never good
Why Carter Bryant didn't get any minutes. Why did he pull Castle and Wemby when the team was playing good. The rotation was crazy and it didn't help them at all. I think Mitch will learn from this lost.
As a Knicks fan, respect to this analysis- unbiased. Knicks are scary but so are the young spurs. Kudos to the challenge today. Please beat Philly lol
The law of average , 11 wins ! Go Spurs Gooooooooooo! Win or loose!
Being a Knicks fan your assessment was fairly respectful but The Referees was helping San Antonio but nevertheless – GG.
The Spurs aren’t going to win every game but it’s okay when they are on like most this season they will beat any team
The Spurs continue to struggle against good jump shooting teams (GSW, Phoenix, Minnesota, New York) that can knock down the mid range and three point shots at a high clip. New York plays good defense too!
Hats off to the Knicks. They played a great game. Lots to learn and study for the Spurs in this game.
This lost was concerning despite the win streak. I just can't figure out the Spurs identity. They just seem scattered at times. They dont set up shots, they just shoot. Barnes and Kornet will be liabilities come playoff time, and Fox, our $223 million dollar man should be taking over games; he has completely underachieved in my opinion. Not sure they will get out of the first round if the face a team that shoots the three well.
Noon game is a scheduled loss for the Spurs. 2 days off in NY after going undefeated in February. Sheit this was the a sure thing like Seatle winning the Superbowl. This game was a throwaway for the Spurs. Some experimental match ups etc.
Vic should stop playing like a guard and not hold the ball too much.
Honestly…this was a game where you needed Sohan 🤷🏽♂️. Needed Sohan on KAT instead of castle and vassell. This is why they struggled to get def rebs
This is coming from a Knicks fan. Y’all the best team in the West.
I’m not as critical of Mitch since this streak began. Offensively, I’d still like to see some pick and roll basketball. Every team we play uses it but we don’t and I’ve never seen halfcourt basketball without it. I also think we are bad at defending it because we don’t run it.
Wemby’s gotta give the ball up to a guard right away. No coast to coast, stop dribbling, you’re too tall. He also needs a move from the paint. His work with the dream was evident opening night against the Mavericks but now non-existent. He needs a hook shot, a turn around, something from the paint.
Fox needs to be more aggressive going to the paint, he hasn’t shot the three well at all. I’d rather him shoot mid-range similar to Vessell’s game, I think the Vassell’s figured his game out. Fox got outplayed by Diawara.
Overall noon game 1 loss out of the last 12, it can be fixed. The guys said it here, when the 3’s aren’t falling they need another style of offense. Pick and roll/pick and pop anyone?
This dude looks like Jules from Pulp Fiction.
The whole game changed 3 minutes left in the 1st Dillon Harper's (flagrant 1) foul on Jalen. Watch the tape and the energy left after that play. We played horrible also
Spurs most gassed team in years. Will get exposed in playoffs by physical defense designed to stop Wemby. Then all you bandwagon spurs fans will finally stfu
