CLNS Media’s John Zannis and Bobby Manning react to the Celtics’ 118-89 loss to the Hornets at TD Garden and growing speculation that Jayson Tatum could be close to returning to the court. They discuss what went wrong tonight, including Payton Pritchard and Nikola Vucevic’s struggles.
They then speculate whether Friday’s game vs Dallas could be the day we finally see Tatum back on the court, and why the Celtics need him desperately following tonight’s loss.

To the damn Hornets 😢
lol Jaylen brown making me mad since February
DAMN BAD.
The Hornets have been on fire. NOBODY is gonna want them in the playoffs.
Hey Boston, refs tried to help you. YA DONE BEEN STUNG! GO HORNETS!
Boston were forcefully bent over and laid the belt. They won't be able to sit down properly this entire week.
I said it before and I stand with my main statement. Trading Simons was stupid now we know it helps them with the tax but that was the only reason. Simons never started a game EVER FOR US imagine what he could’ve done as a starter. But me knowing how the cap space works if you start him and give him huge mins him being 26 years old he would be a 30 million dollar player if he starts if we wanna resign. If I’m Brad if you’re able to resign Simons next season or a season after bring him back. Brad has brought back so many other garbage guys back who wasn’t as good as him twice before (horford, Daniel Thies, and Danillo Banton) so I mean one thing we are missing is we haven’t had a athletic PG who can do a lot since rondo. Pritchard is a back PG just because he started doesn’t mean he can play both sides everyone knows if he doesn’t score what does he do for you? We need to fix that pronto
Not worried. We play 110% every game, laser focused. Hard to do it for 82 games. We’ll have ones like this and haven’t had many where we were just killed like this. Charlotte is on a hot streak but with no real playoff experience. I still see them a year out of actually competing in the playoffs. They won’t be an easy out though.
The Celtics haven’t beat a good team since December 2nd 2025 game 21 on the year against the Knicks. Like teams they are going to face in the late rounds of the playoffs. I’m really hoping to see them beat a title contender before the playoffs.
"lackadaisical"
The c’s couldn’t pick them up full court because they were already halfway down after a second passed
I'm glad that John has the gumption to discuss Vucevic's fit with the Celtics. I was wary of the trade because it didn't look like a good fit. I still feel that way, but it took Simons some time to fit. I just wonder if, and worry that there is not enough time to build that fit. With Tatum seemingly coming back soon that gives two important players trying to fit back in, and recreating chaos. It's a bad culture situation.
Not gonna trash everybody, but I got some gripes.
Let's start small: We could use a better broadcast team. A game or two ago, Carter said of Bailor "He does the little things like rebounding and defense." Those are little things?
Tonight Scal said of Bailor something like "for the last few weeks he's been our best defender." This while the Hornets are getting open shot after open shot after open shot because Bailor can't fight thru a screen to save his fucking life. We see him flailing around, not infrequently getting knocked to the floor as his man hoists up uncontested threes. Lots of great effort, piss poor results. Bailor's defense s a problem.
Bailor is hardly the sole reason we couldn't compete tonight, but he isn't our best defender. Aside from Garza, he's our worst. I understand that he's the pimpee du jour, the new Anfernee the Indispensable, but it is really insulting not only to people like DW and JW etc. but also to us Celtics fans to say something that oafish.
If the 2 best candidates for COTY faced each other on Causeway tonight then I think Mazz was a loser in more ways than one. He has done an incredible job this year, but what was he thinking? Maybe he figures that we are locked into a playoff spot and he wanted to challenge some of his players with tough assignments and didn't care so much about the outcome of the game, nevertheless, this was frustrating to watch. The Hornets are pretty much a carbon copy of the Celtics at both ends. They run the same switches, same sets, etc. and Mazz seemed determined just to let the Hornets beat us with the same plays over and over. One didn't hafta be all broke out with genius to see that putting Hauser/Bailor/DW on the floor with Queta n JB was not going to work against this team. Everybody loves Bailor's energy but he is and will always be a defensive liability. He's upped his game appreciably, but he has no aptitude for perimeter defense and he's slow afoot. They picked him and picked him and it worked and worked and worked. Tonight we needed to get him out of there but Mazz wouldn't do it. We needed good screen busters like PP and HG and JW on the floor tonight. Their screeners were way better than our guys playing thru these screens, and that's why we lost. We lost this game at the line of scrimmage.
Which is not to take anything away from Char. They are a terrific young team and they mighta beat us even if we put the right team on the floor.
Frustrating game to watch.
