SIXTH MAN? Rockets Reed Sheppard SNUBBED From Starting Role | Is Ime Udoka Making A MISTAKE?

Is Reed Sheppard destined to remain just a sixth man for the Houston Rockets under Ime Udoka? Host Jackson Gatlin (@JTGatlin) breaks down Udoka’s recent interview, exposing the tension between maximizing Sheppard’s offensive impact and the Rockets’ rigid, defense-first identity. The analysis spotlights how injuries, substitution patterns, and Udoka’s coaching philosophy shape Sheppard’s role—and questions whether Houston is missing a golden opportunity to pair a dynamic backcourt player with Alperen Şengün.

Key topics include the implications of keeping Sheppard in a bench role, the ongoing debate on starting versus finishing games, and whether the Rockets should embrace flexibility in their rotation. With a disappointing trade deadline, an open roster spot, and uncertainty about Houston’s season goals, the episode asks: Can the Rockets afford to limit their offensive potential for the sake of defensive balance, or is a shake-up needed to compete in the Western Conference?

  1. The truth is that we're just not good enough. Total failure of a rebuild. The lottery completely fucked us. You need a superstar. The lottery produced none for us, not even a high end all star. And of course our in-state rivals get generational superstars who will torment us for the next 10 years. Repeat of the Duncan/Nowitzki eras.

  2. When will people realize that Rockets merely drafted glorified role players? Sengun is the closest to be a superstar but he's simply not focused enough, not hard working enough. Amen will never be a superstar with 0 shot and Jabari/Tari are liability for 50% of the time. We'll see about Reed. Don't even wanna waste the phone battery on Jalen Green.

Arguing about who is starting is pointless with FVV and Adams out.

And don't be an idiot and blame the only player bringing it every night. KD should be a volume shooter similar to Harden considering he's twice as better than him and 97% of the league. But he doesn't do that because he's been trying to include others. That's where he is at wrong. He should shoot the living hell out of that ball.

  3. Manu Ginobili did not start because they had Tony Parker. Reed should start because we do not have FVV.

  4. Jackson, please understand that you can't have two major defensive liabilities starting and a lack of ball handling coming off the bench. Reed and Alpi are easily exposed together. Simple as that. Reed's offense is amazing, but from a balanced perspective they have to stagger him a bit. I (as many do) still want Reed to get 30 min — however that may be.

  5. KD is a BIG PROBLEM of the young Rockets Players. he may be a basketball genius, but his career trajectory and recent playstyle suggest he is an elite individual contributor rather than a true team leader. For a young, developing squad like the Houston Rockets, his presence can be more of a "glittering distraction" than a foundation for success. I wish Brooks was here rather than KD. Hope Freds return will bring some identity to the team.

Here is the combined evidence of why KD lacks true leadership and why the Rockets miss a presence like Dillon Brooks:
    1. The "ISO-Black Hole" vs. Team Rhythm
KD’s game is built on personal efficiency, but it often comes at the expense of collective flow.
    • The Evidence: While KD puts up 30 points on high percentages, he does so through heavy isolation. This turns teammates into spectators. In Houston’s system—which relies on the playmaking of Alperen Şengün and the explosiveness of Jalen Green—KD acts as a "rhythm killer."
    • Selfishness: He prioritizes his personal "true shooting percentage" over empowering young players to make mistakes and learn. He doesn't create for others; he expects others to space the floor for him.
    2. The "Mercenary" vs. The "Bus Driver"
A leader builds a house; KD moves into mansions others have already built.
    • Lack of Grit: From joining a 73-win Warriors team to requesting trades the moment things get difficult in Brooklyn or Phoenix, KD has shown a "mercenary mindset." He doesn't stay to fix a culture; he looks for the next exit.
    • The Comparison: A true "big brother" (like Steph Curry or even LeBron James) anchors the locker room during losing streaks. KD tends to retreat into his own world or fight with trolls on social media, leaving his young teammates without a psychological shield.
    3. Why Dillon Brooks Was the "Real Leader"
The Rockets didn't need a superstar; they needed a "Human Shield," and that’s exactly what Brooks provided.
    • The Villain Role: Brooks embraced the "bad guy" persona, which took the media pressure and defensive focus off the young core. He was the emotional engine of the team.
    • Accountability: Brooks led through defensive intensity and grit. While KD leads by "example" (only when he’s scoring), Brooks led by getting into the trenches. He demanded effort on every possession, whereas KD’s "cool and detached" persona can often come across as indifference when the team is down.
    4. Legacy Over Development
KD is playing for his place in the Hall of Fame, not for the future of the Houston Rockets.
    • The Mentor Gap: Real leaders are mentors. KD has rarely shown the patience required to develop raw talent. His focus is on his scoring title and his "all-time" rankings. In a Rockets jersey, he would likely be a "short-term rental" who stunts the growth of the franchise’s future stars just to polish his own box score.

The Bottom Line: KD is a "solo act" in a team sport. He is a magnificent scorer but a mediocre "Big Brother." Houston’s young core needs a gritty culture-setter like Brooks, not a superstar who only cares about his own efficiency and legacy.

  6. Please use your channel and position in media to positively impact this team rather than trying to stir up more drama. It is perfectly rational for Reed to not start even if you think he should. I love them both, but Reed and Alpi together on defense this year has been a disaster. Reed is the only playmaker we have coming off the bench, and he has much more offensive freedom in that role

  7. If the rockets organization decides to stick with Udoka because they have extended him. Imagine watching a team for the next 4 or 5 years with no offensive Identity. First or second round exit every year under Udoka. What started off as a promising future will end up a complete disaster under Udoka. Unless they cut ties after either this year or next it's going to be tough watching this team struggle on offense and lose in first or second rounds. Cut ties early Rockets while you can!!!!

  8. The rockets have 1 reliable scorer and that’s KD. Reed Thompson and Sengun aren’t consistent

  9. 1. Clock should be ticking on Ime.
    2. Sengun looks frustrated, not having fun anymore and just abandoned D completely. Idk if is about Ime, KD, his family, whatever.
    3. Best chance of this Rockets team is with Reed starting.
    4. They MUST run pick p&r with Reed
    5. They need a real lob threat to work with Reed.
    6. If they don't do all the above, they arent serious about winning and are just wasting Reed's talent.
    7. (Last but not least) Can somebody explain to me, an OKC team packed with shooters got McCain for peanuts and the Rockets/Stone/Ime the more needed team could not????

  10. So, my general observations: 1) Ime needs a coach the focuses on offense, but will his ego allow it? 2) The young guys on this team are not playing with the same joy and love that they used to. Maybe the KD culture killer rap is true? I'm sure that the KD files didn't help anyone. 3) KD is a couple year rental, Sengun and the young core are our future. The coaching staff need to make that apparent and play through Sengun. 4) The Rockets had an open 15th roster spot and did nothing to make this team better, that just seems negligent to me. 5) Udoka is supposedly this defensive-minded coach but every scrub team in the league gets all the open threes they want and we struggle to get any scores because of BS ISO plays. Giving the ball to Alpi at the three point line and going 1-2 flat is not a real offense. 6) Ime has ducked all accountability, I am still sore that he threw Jabari under the bus after that bad game he had, A REAL coach would have acted as a lightning-rod and taken the heat for his player. 7) The Rockets are 8-2 when Reed starts and he has a depleted roster (he is starting because of injuries). Doesn't that give Ime some data that maybe Reed should start? Most of my main issues come back to the coach and his inability to maximize the talent he has right now, instead he defers to his dogmatic, rigid approaches, despite the results.

  11. You may have an argument if the rockets was 10 or 11 in the league what in the west to be in the 4th or third place I think he's doing great complaining about Jalen green consistency last year in February and March let's see what's going to happen with Reed In April think they are trying to work it out 😮

  12. U cant have alpi out there with reed , alpi is a terrible defender u cant even hide that or help that

  13. If Ime sticks to the sub pattern he used with Reed in the Spurs game, I literally don't think it matters if he starts.

If he's coming in 3 minutes into halves, he can still get starter's minutes, rest, and finish the game.

  14. Ime and the coaches are smarter than you Jackson. He explained it perfectly and you still think you know what’s better for this team. This podcast is so whiny. Manu Ganobili was one of the top players back then and he came off the bench right

  15. I think there’s a disconnect in the front office concerning Reed Sheppard playing time between Rafael Stone and Udoka. Reed Sheppard might not have as much experience than Fred Vanvleet, but with more playing time Reed Sheppard ceiling, long-term could be higher. Udoka is letting Rafeal know he has more leverage and he’s going to do it his way.

  16. Like sengun was “Snubbed” from all star game lmao smh but I will say Reed has proven to have a better IQ than Sengun already

  17. Comments are certainly concerning and are coming from a Coach that seems to be disconnected from what makes the team function at a higher level …he's clearly stubborn and stuck in his ways and not flexible to do what it takes to win at the highest level…. which is sad because I believe there is much more that can come from this Roster

  18. You took one of the league's best passers and turned him into a ball-giving guy for Kevin Durant. Half of his turnovers are due to this! He was averaging 1.4 turnovers last year, now he's 3.3. Most of the turnovers are passes to Durant! Everyone knows he's going to pass to him now! Jackson, you!! You've been watching this guy for 5 years, you watched the European Championship too. Don't you think this is a system? Look, when you lose Alperen, you're left with your 38-year-old retired star and your star Amen Thompson (who isn't happy with the system either, he's sulky and doesn't even bother to play) who can't dribble or shoot. You'll tank for another 5 years. You're burying Alperen in every forum! Stop being ridiculous.

  19. You've picked 4 lottery picks in the last 5 years, and you've chosen Jabari, Reed, and Jalen:)) Ana Amen. Only Amen will havefuture. But it's unclear what will happen. His ball control is terrible, he doesn't seem like he'll ever have an acceptable shot! You accidentally acquired an unknown player at number 16 via trade, just to have a role player, and he's a two-time All-Star! Keep criticizing him! Alperen! Ask your general manager how you could pick a 1.5-meter tall guy in front of Castle? Ask him why you couldn't find a clear star player in your 4 lottery picks? Or how you gave a 38-year-old player a team without a guard? Ask him why you didn't get a guard in the midseason!

  20. Alpi is playing with a 20/9/6/1/1 stat. 1,1 block. 1,3 steal. Super defensive center Jalen Duran has only 0.8 block! If we just played a deep defense, Alperen had only have 2 blocks like Steven Adams. Alpi is very athletic. He has a great lateral jump and is agile. Are you saying Adams can't defend against Castle, Fox, Keldon, Vassel, or keep up with them? Are you crazy? What kind of content is this? You all need to make a program about what Udoka is playing, for God's sake. Last year, he had a very good defensive season, doing this with Alpi, Adams, Dillon, Jalen, and Van Fleet. Now, who will he do it with? You're all watching basketball like elementary school kids. Yes, Alperen will block everyone, steal the ball from everyone, and put pressure on everyone's guards. You're ridiculous, ridiculous.

  21. Every season these podcasters artificially come up with some controversial take. This year I guess Ime doesn’t know how to coach anymore 😂. The fan base is so wishy washy because these podcasters ACT like they know something the coaches don’t know 😂 I trust Ime to be able to get us where we need to be once Fred and Adams comes back and Reed would be the perfect 6th man. That’s a championship level team.

  22. I’m just confused. I didn’t know if i was actually watching a head coach that now has a podcast or a podcaster that’s wishing they were a head coach and see fit how they feel it should go?? Hella confused on what I’m watching right now

  23. What I see is this. Last yr was a yr that noone expected and it went overly well, now the standards are up so high and for what? In like year 3 per Silas- really dumb to think that – now stone makes a move. It’s CLEAR Ime didn’t want to get rid of Dillon. Hes continuously brought up Dillon THIS YEAR, why?? Ahhh maybe a stab at STONE (like bruh I never wanted Dillon gone) so you now see a lot of “like Dillon” from the coach .. it’s called a JAB bruh. – now move forward the unexpected happens with vleet and it’s a scramble –
STONE etc didn’t make any moves so the man has to move with what he has – reed isn’t out freaking answer. Get off his sack and get off ime’s and go coach a little league team or something with all this energy.

  24. Boston fans call Ime a fraud. I think I believe them now. He is great at changing the culture from a lazy bad culture. But now we don’t have a good culture since the team isn’t having fun, and KD is a turd in the punch bowl. Biggest problem with the team is zero bench production (last in the league), and poor 3 point shooting when both amen and sengun are on the floor. The organization appears to now have a failed rebuild. Sengun, amen, Jabari don’t look like potential #1’s on a championship team. The only hope the team has of being a championship team is if we introduce some sort of motion offense for Sengun to be the point center. But I’m starting to think that won’t be enough.

  25. The main points that Ime makes are "There is a balance to a team. (Defense 65%, offense 35%)

You lose certain things with Fred being out and Dillon being gone. And you want to replace that and maintain your identity."

I don't think Ime means he wants to balance the team as 50% offense and 50% defense. He means he wants a lockdown defense with enough offense to win. That is the balance he is looking for, and that is the identity with which he and Stone built the team.
