Why Is Nobody Talking About The Atlanta Hawks??

Why Is Nobody Talking About The Atlanta Hawks??

On the 79th episode of Hot Hand Theory, XJ and Geoff break down why the Atlanta Hawks have suddenly become the Eastern Conference’s biggest problem and how this recent surge is being driven by a real identity shift, rather than just schedule luck.

Over the past two weeks, the Hawks have been #1 in the NBA in BOTH offense and defense, and nobody has noticed. Atlanta is quietly doing the “new Moneyball” the smartest teams are leaning into: win the possession battle. They’re forcing turnovers, crashing the glass, and turning Jalen Johnson’s downhill pressure into an endless stream of collapses and kickout threes.

We dive into what’s changed, why Dyson Daniels is the defensive engine (a true “avoid him” wing who still destroys you off-ball), and why Atlanta’s spacing has leveled up with Okongwu + NAW becoming real shooting threats. And we explain why CJ McCollum has mattered more than people realize, giving the Hawks a catch-and-shoot weapon and a late-clock isolation option they simply didn’t have.

We cover:
🔹 Atlanta’s “possession warfare” approach (turnovers, offensive boards, steals + transition)
🔹 Dyson Daniels: the defensive menace powering the entire system
🔹 Jalen Johnson as a downhill advantage machine (collapse + kickouts)
🔹 Okongwu + NAW shooting leap and why it unlocks Atlanta’s spacing
🔹 CJ McCollum’s underrated impact (shooting + late-clock creation)
🔹 Why this Hawks version is a nightmare matchup in the East
🔹 Why Jonathan Kuminga has “explosion” potential in Atlanta

💬 Let us know in the comments: Are the Hawks a real playoff threat — or just on a heater?

  1. I feel like the Hawks are just as dangerous as the Hornets right now. Im not too worried about them taking over the East.. 😒

  2. This is a joke – have you seen who they played? They’ve played the nets, wizards twice, 76ers without Maxey embiid or Paul George, the bucks, blazer and Mavs. They have been on an incredibly weak schedule

  3. how can you say Kuminga will be a better shooter when in GSW he wasn't one and was with the greatest shooter in nba history who created open shots. I get GSW system is way different than Atl but they have a losing record after the Trae trade. I get the Hawks are good but I think this is a little bit over hype.

  4. Yo Hawks fans! What do you think has been most impactful for this run?
    A) Dyson Daniels' elite defense (the dragonfly effect)
    B) Addition of CJ McCollum's shooting & late-clock creation
    C) Okongwu and NAW's shooting unlocking the spacing
    D) Jalen Johnson's rim pressure & creation
    E) Other (comment)

  5. Not to mention NAW is a role players having a high usage rate but can shoot and defend at a higher level, his play this year is a carbon copy of SGA?

  6. Loved the dragonfly analogy, definitely need to shoe horn in more animal analogies if you got them lmao. Also wouldn’t be a HHT ep without an IQ mention lmao, definitely would be a great fit on the hawks but as a huge IQ fan, I think it would be hard to find a team he wouldn’t be able to be a good fit on.

  7. Casual hawks fans just check the google stats and think hes bad because of no 3 pointer. Real fans know how good he is.

  8. Just want people to understand that this new era of basketball is moving into positionless basketball. Quinn is allowing guys to thrive and learn quickly outside their roles. The whole thing of saying that the need a PG, is pointless because it would hender the team defensively, and it allow the Hawks to push and run because of our defense. Which is helping our offense. In the half court setting we are seeing these guys develop and learn quickly. And the whole thing about kuminga and Jalen can’t play together is crazy, if anything that takes pressure and eyes off of Jalen when there both in the game.

  9. nailed it I am back watching Hawks because of the defense….the great barrier reef Daniels !!!!

  10. After all the trades, team could have packed it in, but Quinn, NAW, and McCullum not having that. Will say Kuminga brought energy to “new Hawks ” team his couple of games , made them realize they still competitive team

  11. Thank you for showing love to my hawks. Finding stuff to listen to about the team is few and far between besides a couple local podcasts. Good analysis and breakdowns! Great stuff 👍

  12. might be because, five of their seven wins have come against teams with losing records. The only solid wins were against Philly, who they played twice, still a nice win streak though.

  13. All the hawks starters play pretty decisive roles. Okongwu making almost every 3 pt shot from behind the key also puts a lot of pressure on the defense.
