The real reason they traded him was to avoid the luxury tax. Daryl Morey has been doing this the past 4 seasons, trading away young players and picks just to keep the sixers owner happy.
The truth is the Sixers actually never wanted McCain, it was well known Morey tried trading out of the 24 draft but couldn’t so he drafted the BPA. Even in the offseason Nurse and Morey were on record saying how they really liked the defensive potential of a Maxey Grimes backcourt and said nothing about McCain.
I knew McCain was in trouble when VJ came in. Grimes and Barlow also played well. Throw in the luxury tax, and there you have it. There isn’t room for him anymore.

All the reasons your saying he went to OKC, he could've stayed here for the same reasons. They are just as crowded in the backcourt as we are. Unless those picks are eventually flipped for a better player. My opinion won't change. It was a bad trade
McCain is not going to start over VJ or Maxey. He was going to end up traded or walking. Morey did the correct thing. He got rid of McCain and got back into the 26 NBA draft. The Sixers did not have any draft picks in that draft. Now they have 4 picks. This draft is a deep draft. If Morey can turn McCain into a top 15 pick in this draft. Possibly, get another starting caliber Foward. Job well done. Like he said he sold high and got a great return.
I'm quite confident that Morey was high when he traded McCain.

Believe me Jared has zero regrets and absolutely loves playing with the Thunder. The organization is top notch and Sam Presti is a freakin genius!

They traded him because he wasnt performing well and decided VJ was a better fit next to Maxey. Of course, McCain has been playing better for the Thunder, but I still ain't mad about it
The bottom line is Morey and Nurse didn’t think he was a good player. Nothing more than that. You don’t trade a rookie contract to get under the tax unless you don’t believe in him.

Edgecombe and Grimes give you offense and defense. A 1st round pick that was never going to be a starter here.
I don't think mcain fits Philly style of ball they aren't big enough when he is on the court they don't have enough length on their defense.. and mcain is good but only a shooter can't really do anything else at this level imo
Ultimately he was the 4th guard in the rotation and even if healthy he still may have been behind Grimes and he was never going to be a starter on this team with Maxey and VJ, so a 1st and 3 2nds in that context is selling high. And he went to the Thunder which means when everyone is healthy he’s the 5th guard (SGA, Caruso, Wallace, Joe) so they traded multiple picks for what’s at best a regular season rotation piece for them and won’t see any significant minutes in the post season unless someone is injured.

Forget all the noise. Look at what happens when he's on the court. The opposition is constantly seeking him out on switches and 1-on-1s. Neither last year or this one has he shown he can stay in front of his man defensively. He's got a bit of a Curry physicality which will only lead to a lot of PT on a title contender if he develops shooting skills like Steph. Time will tell.
VJ and Grimes took his minutes. I like Jared however next year was an option year and they weren't going to pay him.

I feel like the fans continue to get gaslighted. Why are the fans supposed to feel good about getting a late late round 1st round pick, and please stop acting like 2nd round picks mean anything. This was a bad deal and maybe things would have been different if Morey brought in another piece. But the organization let go of a potential good player, barely got anything back for him (I think Morey got fleeced) and then did not add to the roster that is injury prone. He’s a 21 year old with a promising future now he’s elsewhere doing what he would’ve done for Philly who are getting beat by the Pelicans one of the worst teams & blown out better yet destroyed by NY & last night the Spurs
