How can a team be both bad and being good and worse at being bad?
Its very upsetting to think christie is NOT tanking, he truly is bad if he is trying to win
I think the only way to fix tanking is give everyone that doesn’t make the playoffs an equal chance at lottery picks. The teams that make the play in get an extra second round pick at the beginning of the second round. Give teams a $ reason to make play in also.
Ask me this question. I absolutely believe we need to position ourselves for the best lottery odds. You covered the Jazz.. but why did we decide to beat the Clippers on the road, knowing we had to play the Jazz next?? Why wasn't Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Isaiah Stevens playing cause it seemed like a perfect opportunity? Why did Doug play DaRozan the entire game?
This year is kinda an anomaly for how hard teams are tanking. We shouldn’t react too hard to this season
In my gut I knew the Kings would find a way to nuke our draft hopes
The one thing we all had to be exited about is fading and we’ll get a decent bench role player at BEST
Hey James, I think tanking needs a 'root cause' fix. What if we replaced the lottery with an Auction Format using a fictional currency (similar to fantasy football auction drafts)?
1. Earning: Teams get a base budget + extra credits for every win.
2. Spending: Credits can be used to bid on rookies, trade for vets, or even expand your salary cap.
3. The 'War Chest': To ensure bad teams still get stars, let non-playoff teams carry over a percentage of their credits each year. Playoff teams reset to the baseline.
This effectively ends tanking because losing literally costs you draft capital, yet it still provides a clear path for rebuilding teams to save up and 'buy' the next Wemby or LeBron.
NBA needs to have a 3rd party doctor to assess the injuries. If those are questionable, and teams do what the Jazz is doing, put them in the first apron, and drop their odds for the 1st pick ping pong ball.
Great idea to start up a "Anti-Tanking Committee for the Protection of Game Integrity"
Jazz fan here. That's a fair take on the Jazz trying to game the system for tanking. Believe me, it sucks and I hate the desperate measures that our front office has taken, but we cannot afford to lose our top-8 protected pick to the Thunder. I think we can all agree here, Kings or Jazz fans, that we don't need to make the rich, richer. I hope the Kings get a high pick this draft and let's go small market teams!
Whenever a team gets penalized for tanking, their odds in the lottery should also drop.
I really dislike the idea of an "anti-tanking" committee like that. It's going to make this way too much of a judgement call, open to corruption and bigger market team preferences.
Do we really want a bunch of old time coaches and NBA people starting putting themselves into coaches shoes and analyzing their decision making?
I don't trust that one bit.
The method of preventing a team from having a top-4/5 pick for 2 years running is the fairest option, that will really benefit the league. This method works great in baseball, and will be great for the NBA as well.
So teams will look to focus more to tank on a good draft? Great, let them to it. That means in the other year, teams will be motivated to win and not be a bottom 5 team. I'm happy with that.
But on the other hand, if you have a Wizards/Jazz team trying to game the system year after year, you're stopping that.
And if a team needs 3 straight years of top 5 picks to become competitive, then they don't deserve it. Let them invest in finding proper talent in a 7th or 10th place pick.
Logic is simple: a team selected in the lottery in the top 4 can't participate in the lottery the year after, and necessarily starts outside the top 4 (depending on the exact position).
Then, for handling blatant tanking, I want them to build a formula for "tanking index", like no. of minutes to the team's top 3 available performers in the 4th Quarter or whatever they want. A team going above the index gets a warning once, and loses draft position after 2nd infringement.
Reduce the human bias from the loop as much as possible, and still keep wiggle room for teams to operate within.
My idea to fix tanking, give the best lottery odds to the better record of the bottom 8 teams, this way teams towards the bottom still remain competitive
Decide the season into 3 parts. Each winner automatically gets in the playoffs. Each part has no awards or money only getting in the playoffs. After the 3rd season finishes, the top 4 teams make the playoff along with the winners of the 3 seasons. That means every team will be playing hard so they have a chance to improve over the year and not tank (as much)
Drop that stupid mid season tournament. J.D. FAGAN MAVS FAN…
Lochenheim does not approve
Less trades as a byproduct of getting rid of draft pick protections is acceptable, the marketability of trades has always been the big name players not the small ones and this would force more teams to use their picks to move those big names because they wont have multiple years locked up on bad pick protections and you won't get teams tanking to keep their protected pick multiple years in a row.
I’m a wayfair service pro and James ham just gave me an ad this is so weird hahahaha 😂
This feels like the move a team makes to avoid getting penalized during the lottery
