  1. The Nuggets look worn down and tired. Have not looked good since the All-Star Break — question marks about their depth, health, and ability to close games. They got pounded by OKC. Meanwhile the Spurs are surging in the second half of the season.

I put San Antonio on the same tier as OKC given their talent/depth and the fact they crushed the Thunder in all their matchups. At this point Denver has to be with the likes of the Rockets and Lakers.

  2. I’m a Rockets fan and can’t even be mad we’ve dropped in the Contender rankings

I assumed we’ll be progressing as the season went on but it’s the opposite. Teams are catching up to our by-committee PG situation and have found success targeting our flaws I.e. Sengun and Reed’s defence, lack of experienced ball handling, make everyone but KD beat you, etc.

Our ceiling is WCF if we face MIN > SA.

Really want us to win a series so our young players can grow in confidence

  3. Great analysis, but l would like to add an opinion regarsing Okc. Yes l agree they are the safest bet in a tier of their own but there is a consequence to them adding more prolific scorers and penetrators such as Aj Michel and Mcane but that changed their game a lot. From a team that played frenetic defense to a team that is compeeting just to score more. That is the reason that this year despite the fact that they look great they had much more close games then last year. Yo will notice they are not blowing their oponents foe 20 pts and more as last year. There is a reason for that change in the game. Their top defenders are Hartenstein as rim protector, Dort and Caruso as perimeter defenders. Adding players as Mitchel and Mcane requires benching some of these players for good portion of game. It will all depend in the playoffs how will they combine all of these quality players.

  4. Can someone tell me which OKC Spurs game was the Thunder healthy? And what was the score of the game when they were at their most healthy point and if Jdub was active and if he was still struggling with his shot bc he was coming back from his hand injury

  5. Knicks defense is better than you think. You best believe that we'll be seeing less of Brunson + KAT playing together in the playoffs and more of Mitchell Robinson.

  6. YOU ARE WRONG ON THE CELTICS AND I AM A LAKER FAN…GOT THE CELTICS A TIER 2 AND MAYBE A TIER 1…BOSTON LOST TO OKC ON A LESS THAN A SECOND FREE THROW..AND HAD A CHANCE STILL TO WIN BUT PRITCHARD MISS THE SHOT.

  7. MAILBAG:
Hi Jason when you're doing the contender rankings do you factor in pre-season expectations vs current expectations, and hypothetical matchups against the other contenders, or is this strictly an analysis of each team in isolation of competition? I think Detroit should be in the Tier 3 group with the fatal flaw being shooting/secondary creation. I agree with all your points why Detroit isn't going to win the title, but I don't see how those reasons are worse than the Knicks (KAT/Brunson will always get picked on), and the Cavs (playoff Harden, and this team folds under pressure).
For context this is the 1st time in my lifetime the Pistons have been really good, and I'm conflicted at how the media's portraying us. On the one hand, we've regained credibility and respect across the league after 16 years and we're way ahead of schedule comparing pre-season expectations to now. The flipside is after having our first real slump these past few weeks, it seems the knives have come out and people were waiting for a reason to dismiss us as a real threat. Thanks as always for your content

  8. MAILBAG: Hey Jason! In your opinion, which dysfunctional player/team trait is more damning to these respective coaches' overall process and game plan? The fact that the Timberwolves can't run an effective Pick and Roll game with Rudy since he is unable to catch consistent passes in the nail with Coach Finch…Or the fact that KD has constant mental breakdowns when he sees a double and most likely forcing a turnover on that possession with Ime Udoka?

  9. I don’t think OKC have enough to challenge the Lakers. I think the Lakers now found their footings, they are going to win the whole thing no doubt

  10. Yeah sorry Jason but you're completely wrong Boston probably has the best chance behind OKC to winning a championship by the time the playoffs start Tatum will be back to where he's supposed to be and Boston score is the only team with championship experience in the Eastern Conference but keep sleeping on them they'll be a great parade in Boston
