CONVINCED: The Case for James Borrego—Why the New Orleans Pelicans Should MAKE Him Head Coach NOW

James Borrego positions himself as the ideal next head coach for the New Orleans Pelicans, proving he can maximize a flawed roster and secure Zion Williamson’s buy-in to a less ball-dominant role. Jake Madison breaks down the Pelicans’ narrow 111-106 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, spotlighting Borrego’s tactical adjustments, the emergence of Dejounte Murray, Trey Murphy, Saddiq Bey, and Herb Jones in the starting lineup, and the tough realities of missed shots during crunch time.

Key insights include the Pelicans’ rebounding struggles—surrendering 8 offensive boards to Cleveland in the fourth quarter—and their urgent need for improved center play to stay competitive in a loaded Western Conference. Plus, hear the latest on the ambitious Smoothie King Center renovation and what it means for fans, ticket prices, and the team’s future in New Orleans. Will the right coaching and roster moves finally push the Pelicans into true contention?

  1. I want to see him win a few of these games against these playoff teams we’re about to face. If he can’t do it with a healthy squad, I’d rather move on to another coach.

  2. You're right about the arena. The problems are that:
    (1) this region is poor,
    (2) it's getting poorer,
    (3) it hasn't cared about basketball since Tulane and UNO BB collapsed in the mid 1980s.

  3. If Jalen Johnson, Alperen Sengun and Kel'el Ware can all be top-10 in rebounding, then why can't Trey Murphy, Derik Queen and Yves Missi? Basically, the same kind of players. Plus, so many of the second chance points come off long rebounds that the Pels get beat to regularly, not a big man problem.

  4. I totally disagree Monty was the only intelligent coach the Pelicans had the rest were idiot s with one thing in common and that's not knowing when to call time time out. 12 to 2 runs smart coach = time out idiot coach 20 to 2 run. Walking on the side line like James looking stupid. And worse the pelicans went on a run and he calls time out for the other team.Big dummy

  5. As Morpheus said to Neo in 'The Matrix', "There's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path." Having the confidence to close games is a learned skill. They're improving in that, bit by bit, but it was clear the Cavs were the more confident and sure team in that fourth quarter.
