What We Saw In Markelle Fultz’s Toronto Raptors Debut

Markelle Fultz made his Toronto Raptors debut in a 143–127 win over the Utah Jazz, giving us an early look at how he fits in Darko Rajaković’s system.

Signed to a 10-day contract after a strong run with Raptors 905, Fultz was immediately thrown into the rotation with Immanuel Quickley, Brandon Ingram, and Jakob Poeltl all sidelined.

Fultz’s Debut Performance

In roughly 16 minutes, Fultz showed flashes of exactly what Toronto needed.

The Good:

Consistently got into the paint
Created opportunities for teammates
Strong chemistry with Scottie Barnes, including a smooth give-and-go finish

The Bad:

Turnovers were an issue, including an unforced mistake in transition
Team-low plus/minus (skewed by late-game minutes)

The Defense:

Active and physical at the point of attack
Provided more defensive presence than typical reserve guards
What This Means for the Rotation

Fultz’s arrival creates a real backcourt decision for head coach Darko Rajaković.

Backup PG Battle:

Jamal Shead just had a 15-assist game
But his scoring limitations remain
Fultz offers a more balanced offensive skillset

This could turn into a minutes split — or a takeover — if Fultz proves reliable.

Potential Lineup Impact

Dual-Guard Sets:
When Quickley returns, Fultz could slide into a secondary playmaker role, allowing Quickley to play off-ball and focus on scoring.

The Spacing Issue:
Fultz’s lack of shooting (career 28% from three) presents challenges.

Lineups with:

Fultz
Poeltl
Other non-shooters

…could clog spacing, forcing Rajaković to carefully stagger rotations.

The Bigger Picture

The Raptors are currently 5th in the East, and this move is a classic low-risk, high-upside flyer.

For Fultz: This is a real audition for a longer contract
For Toronto: He fills a major need — a steady backup floor general

He may not fix the shooting issues, but he brings control, pace, and experience to the second unit.

  1. Great video. For the record he is eligible for playoffs if officially signed by Toronto.

This is because players that are signed after March 15th that had not played for another organization that season are still eligible.
