I'm with you Nick I honestly do not comprehend it. It's almost like he's not even in the talk to even be the number one. There's lots of NBA players that give Luka props on how well he plays and what an insane basketball IQ he has. The NBA wants him in LA because he's such a popular player with the fan base so he can be their cash cow yet he'll probably never win MVP.
Luka’s defensive rating is actually above league average, his 19.5% defensive rebound percentage is almost double other PGs like Curry (10.2%) and Brunson (8.8%), kickstarting the transition.
He is #1 among PGs in defensive rebounds and #9 in the entire NBA, his steals (1.6 SPG) is top 15 in the league, blocks are 0.6 BPG elite for his position providing vertical deterrence, and deflects (2.8 per game) indicate high activity in the passing lane.
This season Luka has actually transformed into a high-IQ positional defender, who beats you with strength, elite rebounding, and high level anticipation in the passing lanes.
Luka is firmly in the top 5-7 range for starting point guards in overall possession impact, and is a genuine plus of the Laker’s defense.
Statistically, the Laker are significantly more vulnerable defensively when Luka sits. When Luka is on the bench, the Laker’s defensive efficiency drops off a cliff when Luka is not on the floor. All this while being the centrepiece of the Laker’s offence and dragging them to a 3rd seed in the West without strong anchor defenders around him like Chet, Dort, Wallace and Caruso.

What I hate is how disingenuous so many fans and the media are. If you never want to give Luka MVP because of his defense(which is ridiculous because he’s actually become an average defender) then that’s fine. But then on the same hand I better not have heard or seen you talking about Jokic should have won in 2023, how Jokic should have won in 2024, how Jokic should have won 4 in a row, Yada yada yada. Because it’s hypocrisy. The same media members and fans pounding the table for Jokic every single year (as if his defense isn’t WORSE than Luka’s) are the same people that will sit there and say “defense matters” when we’re talking MVP when it comes to Luka. Scoring avg are up by like 3 a game for everyone. So this is as if Luka was scoring 30 a game in 2016 just like Steph did in 2016. It's not crazy levels of scoring.

It's funny how some players get voter vague before even winning anything. Feels like the case for Doncic. He was so good so fast that we became numb to it. If any other player had his numbers they'd be the runaway favourite to win the MVP. Yet Luka's MVP case seems to be dropping the better he plays. I don't like that Nick has been devaluing Wemby's play, but he's right that the way we look at Luka is off too.
