The Raptors’ Future Might Already Be Decided

The Raptors’ Future Might Already Be Decided

The Toronto Raptors are currently sitting in a play-in spot… but not everyone is buying it.

After a strong stretch earlier in the season, things have cooled off, and now the big question is starting to pop up again — is this team actually good, or is this just a “fake” record?

At the same time, a recent press conference from MLSE CEO Keith Pelley might have quietly revealed how this organization really views team-building. And if that applies to the Raptors, it could explain why this team never fully committed to a rebuild in the first place.

From the trades for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, to bringing in Brandon Ingram, the Raptors have consistently chosen to stay competitive rather than bottom out. Ownership seems set on pushing forward with this core, rather than buying into a “fake team” mindset. But is that the right approach? Or should they be resetting and building through the draft instead?

And the bigger question… do they even have that choice?

Let me know what you think. Are the Raptors better than people think, or is this the time to fully commit to a rebuild?

  1. I first thing is Pelley is a hockey guy and doesn’t understand basketball. So that is why i never care what the leafs do.
The NBA problem is proportional you only need a superstat and a 3 and D player. And tanking is the only way or huge trade.

  2. W vid yeah they did ruin Siakams potential with their lack of decisions opefully they listen and bring proper assets and players that will help Scottie and this team be actual contenders. Idc if u got to move on from rj iq or whatever just get better pieces that makes the team better anf fit for Scottie Barnes

  3. i mean if the 6ers lose against the pistons we could make the playoffs i mean we do have 2 allstars teams are even tryna get one but we have TWO 2

  4. Ownership doesn't want to tank because tanking teams don't sell as many tickets at home games and don't make any revenue from the playoffs. That's what I think one of the reasons for this are.

  5. I would say that the Raptors should have made trades with the old core (FVV, Siakam, OG, and company) for draft capital and should have started that years-long rebuild. It has worked in a number of situations with a number of teams lately.
That said, I still do not advocate for aggressive tanking. I feel like the lottery odds do not fully favour tanking teams anymore and years of aggressive tanking can produce a losing culture in a franchise. I would have been okay with years of being bad and getting new, young talent that is cheaper and has more potential than some established players.
