Full breakdown on LaMelo

>Only four times in NBA history has a player 21 years old or younger posted season averages of at least 15 points, five rebounds, six assists and shot over 35 percent from 3. LeBron did it in 2004-05; Luka did it in 2020-21; LaMelo’s first two seasons make up the other two. This guy has interfaced with the NBA game in an effortless way from moment one. He ain’t no joke.
>
>Ball’s legitimacy as a shooter during his first two seasons in the NBA has been one of the more surprising level-to-level transitions for a prospect that I can remember. Up until his rookie season, there was very little evidence to suggest that he’d acclimate so quickly. Yet during years one and two, he attempted 826 3s and knocked them down at a 37.8 percent clip. We knew he had touch—I’d argue that LaMelo is in the 99th percentile for passing, shooting, and dribbling touch worldwide—it was just hard to predict how much this wild man would rein it in once the stakes got higher.
>
>LaMelo won Rookie of the Year and then became an All-Star in his second season, but his path is lined with moments of head-scratching chaos. His creativity can unlock possibilities other players only dream of, but any coach needs to have a high tolerance, because there will be plenty of bad that comes with the good.
>
>On the offensive end, all of that risk-taking yields a lot of fun, ultimately productive plays. The issue is that he gambles too much defensively, at a point in his career when his goal should be to simply hold up. He’s disruptive and anticipates pretty well, but he is not as strong or as vertically twitchy as his older brother Lonzo. There are creative, risky superstars with playoff success in this league (Nikola Jokic and Steph Curry immediately come to mind), but their legitimacy is validated by replicable, efficient offense and defense that (at the very least) might bend but not break. Can LaMelo solidify himself in this way? Injuries have slowed the start to his current season, but the balance Ball strikes is the thing I’ll be watching as his early 20s unfold.

No other Hornets players made the top 100. Fair if you ask me.
