I also think back to the Game we won against the Nuggets. The team shows a lot of fight in games that we have no business being close in

Less ball watching when Trae isn’t on the court . The players are moving off ball and running all over
The defense communication was on point last night. there isn’t much u can do when KD and Kyrie decides to start cooking

It’s normal for a team to step up when they star player is out

i don’t believe it’s entirely down to effort, i think the team keys more on trae than anything else in both phases, so without him they tend to play more independently decisive if that makes sense.

I think more than anything it’s the confidence that is gained from playing good defense. A level of defense that isn’t possible in the starting line up when Trae is in. It gives us an identity, something that we can hang our hat on when things get tough. For most of the season when things get rough it seems like we’re just throwing things at the wall and hoping something sticks. We don’t really have anything that we excel at that we rally around. We have absolutely no way to enforce our will against a good team when shots aren’t falling.
In games like last night when we couldn’t get something going on offense for the most part we were able to hunker down on defense(with the exception of Kyrie and KD being world beaters) and enforce our will on the defensive end. Then all of the sudden you are getting turnovers and finding yourself in easy transition opportunities with higher percentage shots. Seeing the ball go in is contagious, and it spreads to the half court offense.
I also think that maybe due to the sheer volume of shots that Trae takes, that when he doesn’t play our guys feel like they are more free to get theirs.

Go back to the nuggets game at the beginning of the month. It’s the best this squad has played and without Trae.

Bill Simmons barely watches basketball that doesn’t involve Boston in some way or form. He doesn’t give real basketball analysis it’s just conjecture and opinion, journalists of his breed are dying out though. He’s really just a historian who loves the NBA is a great long form writer who parlayed that into a successful multi-faceted media company. whose content is lacking, in my opinion but that’s another thing.
There’s room for the eye test but back it up with stats, old head mentality sports journos like bomani, bill, kornheiser, colishaw, wilbon are all great at the narrative building but I think the average fan is smarter now. They need a lot more than “the team looks better without him” or some type of opinion based on emotional feeling. Especially with the spectre of sports betting, just wait till some of these guys give takes that people start to lose a lot of money on. They’ll adapt or die.

I’ve been out of the loop on this. What is the reasoning behind the Trae hate this year?
Avalon_Don
Grizzlies went 20-5 without Ja Morant last season yet you ain’t hear no bullshit like this. 🙄

NBA media really has hated Trae since OU. It really doesn’t matter what he does or doesn’t do they will never give him credit. There will always be a bias against him especially since he will always be attached to Luka. Trae can get tunnel vision but a offensive minded coach could fix that issue. Nate is just brain dead. I don’t see how an All-NBA PG is the problem with this team.
Why should we give a fuck what Bill Simmons gotta say about the Hawks anyway?
IceTraeDaGang
No and the numbers don’t back this up either look at his on-off numbers we are 4 points better per 100 possessions with Trae than without Trae.
BigFatPapaBear
Yea we all love the Atlanta “despite the loss” Hawks. SHUT THE FUCK UP BITCH SIMMONS, the ONLY reason the Hawks have become a relevant team for the first time in their history is because of TRAE YOUNG. I am not a blind supporter of Trae and defend everything he does, but by god he was our saving grace, maybe Luka is better, maybe he’s not…but THANK GOD we didn’t draft Ayton or Marvin Bagley😂😂😂
jtezus
Ahh Bill Simmons, he always has the best takes.

You also need to consider how often other teams do this. A star player goes down so it’s next man up and results in 20 shots having to be redistributed among the team and every player is playing for a bigger share of the pie every game.
Sure the hawks look good when Trae misses one game but after three everybody is crying that we are poverty it’s always been like this and it’s like this with almost any team. How many times have we lost to a bad team which is missing their top guys? I know hornets heat and sixers loses are just a few examples of loses where the other team is resting star players. Also, we got destroyed by grizz with Trae Ja and Bane resting.

We played hard, but executed horrendously on offense. Easy passes were routinely missed by DJ that Trae makes in his sleep
