It’s time. He doesn’t have the spark he used to have

  2. here-i-am-now

His “expected” retirement age was like 4 seasons ago.

  3. skurred666666

NBA season is a grind, he is still playing at a very high level but I question his interest in carrying a team to the playoffs. I think he’d be more interested if he can play a 1B or #2 type of role at least until the playoffs. The current Lakers team is demanding too much from a 38 year old LeBron

  4. Dimega17

He’s gonna go through the ole Urban Meyer retirement plan

  5. theskyofmj

What’s he got left to play for? Passing Kareem, and maybe playing with Bronny. I’m thinking after he passes Kareem he calls it quits.

  6. MasterTeacher123

They are in the process of wasting another great Lebron season

  7. CesarosPubicHairs

This Lakers run has really been a joke aside from their championship run and the 2021 season (they made the playoffs, through injuries). If they didnt panic trade all their roleplayers that offseason they’d be in a better place but Pelinka’s roster building is hilarious. Where the hell did he find Wenyen Gabriel 😂

  8. LukaDoncicfuturegoat

Lakers so bad, they break Lebron. Thanks to Jeannie and Pelinka

  9. Blackmalico32

Would be interesting if he says “I’m done” right at the cusp of breaking Kareem’s record.

  10. EjaySays

It’s understandable, he has been the chasing the ghosts of the greats for a very long time now and personally I think there’s only 1 he has yet to catch. Being on this team isn’t getting him closer and he’s running out of time.

  11. CanyonCoyote

Isn’t the rumor now that Bronny may need all 4 years if he even makes the NBA at all? The Cavs don’t want to mess with their chemistry to bring in old man Bron so what Bron is going to a fourth team to try and steal a 5th chip.

I absolutely think he’s coming back because he’s a narcissist who loves attention and that’s mostly what all this recent grousing is about. He always gets what he wants and I think he assumed he’d win a 5th and maybe 6th chip in LA with AD, break the scoring record, play a year or two with Bronny and then ride off into the sunset as the GoAT. Now he’s staring at another playoff miss or first round exit, an always injured superstar teammate, a Cavs front office that doesn’t want him and his baggage, and a son that might not be NBA ready in time or at all.

LeBron will be fine. LeBron will break the record. LeBron will play next season and we will all feel stupid for taking his yearly midseason whining seriously again.

  12. Active_Page_3886

He’s not even thinking of retiring. This is just a play to get the Lakers brass worried enough to make a win-now, appease Lebron trade, no matter the cost

  13. JonTheCatMan11

Re-signs to team with proven inept front office. Pikachu face when front office remains inept.

  14. DJBabyB0kCh0y

What playing for the Lakers does to a mf.

Just a few weeks ago there was a story saying James wanted to play until he was 45. So retiring earlier than expected could still be a while from now.

  15. SpaceGhost2009

His son also isn’t a lottery pick so I doubt he’ll be able to play with him like he’s said for however many years.

  16. or_maybe_this

These Sports Illustrated articles are all really shitty. Clickbait and based solely on other people’s reporting or tweets.

  17. Deadpan_GG

Bronny gonna have to skip his college bball to play with LeDad

  18. volantredx

He’ll break Kareem’s record by one basket, walk off the court, leave the arena and drive home.

  19. Calexander3

Why doesn’t he just retire after one season with Bronny and then comeback to come off the bench at 42 to play with Bryce? I don’t think there’s a single team in the league that wouldn’t want to help LeBron do this. What a huge marketing boost for any team. And LeBron could just been seen more as a coach/developmental guy who can also help play-make off the bench. I’m sure he’d take a vet min deal as well.

  20. anonymousnuisance

Signing that extension with the Lakers is probably eating at him hard right now.

  21. Bro is going back to Cleveland they got a hole in their SF spot

  22. No, he doesn’t. He’s just sending warning shots to the Lakers brass to do something before he bolts.

  23. That’s not the way I took his statement. He was messaging the Lakers that he wants them to nut up or he was going somewhere else.

He didn’t say he wanted to retire, he said he doesn’t want to play for losers.

  24. asvpmvson

He can be number 3 on my team and relax until the playoffs if he wants

  25. nonufwiendz

what playing with troy brown jr does to a mf

  26. You can’t take Lebron literally. This is another power move to get the Lakers to move future assets to get him in a position to win another title.

    Here’s the thing: He’s right.

The Lakers are treating those picks like they’ll be top 5 and if they’re not careful it will end up being a self-fulfilling prophecy. Under Dr. Buss this wouldn’t even be a question because there was always this expectation that they’d land another star.

  27. gustriandos

Playing with a bunch of nobodies on a team going nowhere has to be pretty damn boring for a guy who has been around for 20 years, on top of the fact that losing itself sucks.

  28. Nightmannn

Why would he retire? Lakers can trade him and still get a shit ton of value back. He just wants to play on a better team.

  29. JadedButWicked

Harden, Bronny, Wembanyama, and Lebron on the Rockets next year

  30. teamweed420

This author really added some fan fiction on this one

  31. ParagonSaint

Lebron is gonna play out his contract and sign with the Clippers so he can stay in LA

  32. downgoesbatman

If LeBron does get traded to a stacked team that ends up winning a title. Does that count towards his legacy or against it as he’s not the sole leader for the championship run.

  33. -HeisenBird-

First get 40,000 points, then you have my permission to retire.

  34. BobbyRalston

He’s not retiring until he announces it at the start of camp so he can go on his world tour where the announcers can say during the season “this will be his second to last game ever in Sacramento…” and then they roll out yet another video tribute to him. Then ESPN will say he invented taco eating on Tuesday and gloss over the impact Delonte West had on his life.

  35. FirePuma95

The morning after LeBron retires I’m going to wake up and still not care about an NBA player retiring…..

  36. Hes stuck in a shitty team that wont become competitive anytime soon so unless he get traded to a better team hes looking at 2-3 years of mediocrity. Might as well retire at this point.

  37. SandyMandy17

    That’s not a retiring hint

    That’s a trade me hint
