What does the Bucks offense look like?

With the Bucks struggles on offense recently I thought it’d be interesting to look at, statistically, exactly what the Bucks offense looks like and what types of shots are being taken/created.

Here’s how the Bucks offense looks according to the NBA stats categories;

Play Type | Play Frequency| Number in League
—|—|—-
Spot Up | 22.9%| 18th
Transition | 16.7% | 13th
PnR (Ball Handler)| 13.9%| 26th
Post-Ups| 7.8%| 2nd
Misc/Other | 6.9%| 9th
PnR (Roll Man)| 6.7% | 7th
Handoff| 6.2%| 6th
Isolation | 6.0% | 20th
Putbacks| 5.7%| 10th
Cut| 5%| 27th
Off-Screen| 2.9%| 23rd

For visual reference here’s this data in a [pie chart](https://i.imgur.com/1QIRRin.png). And to give a little context as to where the Bucks stand here’s the league leaders in each play type.

Play Type | Play Frequency| League Leading Team
—|—|—-
Isolation | 12.8%| Dallas Mavericks
Transition | 20.6%| Sacramento Kings
PnR (Ball Handler)| 22.2%| Atlanta Hawks
PnR (Roll Man)| 8.1% | Philadelphia 76ers
Post-Ups| 8.3%| Denver Nuggets
Spot Up| 26.5%| Boston Celtics
Handoff | 9.4% | Sacramento Kings
Cut| 10.1%| Golden State Warriors
Off-Screen| 9.6% | Golden State Warriors
Putbacks| 7.3%| Charlotte Hornets
Misc| 6.8% | Golden State Warriors & Denver Nuggets

What stands out to you about the composition of the Bucks offense? What do you think they should cut back on/do more of?

Additional stats (FT Frequency, TOV Frequency, Score Freq, etc), as well as filters and ordering you can toy around with, can be found [here](https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/transition).

This is a really great post, thanks for sharing!

Honestly need more postups from Jrue and Brook. Giannis has been posting up a lot, but Brook and Jrue have been genuinely elite as postup scorers in their positions their entire careers, when we need a sure fire bucket we need to lean on those possessions more.

the low number for cutting and extremely low number of off-screens are things we need to change. we need to have Grayson and Pat need to be running off ball more especially.

could always run some more PNR and do some more creative things with those plays (Spain PNRs, more stagger screens, etc.)

20th in ISO? They must use a really loose definition of ISO.

Spot up% is considered whst type of shot?

  6. Obviously without Middleton the offense is going to take a dip. However the reason this team is struggling on offense is partially because of Giannis and our lack of dynamic guard play. Without Middleton & Jrue for games we have reverted back to point Giannis and it’s a terrible offense. It asks a player that can’t shoot and isn’t necessarily quick to create on the perimeter which is GA biggest weakness because he has no in-between game. It also asks for our other players to stand around on the perimeter to create space. So if Giannis isn’t just overpowering his way to the basket and guys aren’t hitting 3’s it’s an ugly offense. As others have stated here I wish we used our size more, Lopez spends half his time standing at the 3 point line when 90% of the games he has a mismatch. Also as other fans have said on this post our cutting and off ball movement (as shown by the statistics) is god awful. I wish we used Pat & Allen more for cutting without the ball or running them off screens.

I get it right now we aren’t a complete team and Bud is giving the best player the ball and asking him to create. Which makes sense and Giannis is amazing and has nights where it works however overall we need better off ball movement and while we don’t have dynamic guard play we have massive size but yet we rarely use it. Hopefully the offense gets better when Middleton gets back but who even knows when that will be..
