The Oklahoma City Thunder have started off their rebuild in a huge way. 6’8 Australian point guard Josh Giddey is one of the best young players in the Thunder’s core and he is looking like one of the NBA’s next young stars. The OKC Thunder already have an all-star in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and they also drafted 7-foot unicorn Chet Holmgren but Josh Giddey has already proven that he is another kind of player. Giddey has won 4 straight rookie of the month awards and has recorded the 4 youngest triple doubles in NBA history for the OKC Thunder. After being compared to Luka Doncic and LaMelo Ball being a tall point guard with insane passing ability, Giddey is starting to create a name for himself as the Thunder’s playmaking wizard. Along with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Holmgren, rookie Jalen Williams, Tre Mann, Aleksej Pokusevski and all of the Thunder’s young players, Giddey is looking like a key piece of OKC’s future. In their latest game, the OKC Thunder lost to the Miami Heat with a Jimmy Butler game-winner but Josh Giddey put up an 18-point, 15-rebound, and 10-assist triple double.17
The main issue with Giddey’s skill set as a rookie was his poor outside shooting. The OKC Thunder have hired shooting coach Chip Engelland to help him and the roster. So far, Giddey has improved his three-point shooting numbers in his 2nd NBA season. Many fans have accused Giddey with hitting a sophomore slump but he is currently having his best all-around stretch of his young NBA career. But what is the ceiling for Josh Giddey and this young Oklahoma City Thunder core? Can SGA, Giddey, Holmgren, and potentially Victor Wembanyama, form a Thunder dynasty around the NBA?
