Kind of a me-first mentality you got there DJ

  2. RepTexas

    Let me get this straight.

    1. The Spurs made you feel like you had to prove them wrong by NOT being a negative influence. Having to remain on your best behavior.
    2. They made you prove your worth on the court before you take the number 1 spot, which meant you had to put in a whole lot of extra work to earn that spot. Elevating your level to a new NBA ready level.
    3. When you finally earned that spot, you were upset that the all-star that lost his spot didn’t decide to continue mentoring you as you lead the team.

And now you are airing it all out because you are unhappy in Atlanata.

Nothing here is surprising and I don’t think it proves the point that Murray intended to make here.

  3. LocalPharmacist

I do agree that Tony should have stayed and mentored him. But you can’t take the dawg out of a competitor like Tony, he needed a second opinion.

  4. katswansey

Can’t wait to hear what he thinks of the Hawks if this is how he feels about the Spurs lol

  5. 789Trillion

I mean, I understand if he felt a little miffed by Tony leaving instead of mentoring him, but that wasn’t Tony’s job and also DJ himself is not gonna be happy if he lost his spot to some kid. What was he expecting?

Also the fact that Gregg Popovich, probably the greatest coach ever, decided to bench one of his best players ever and a hall of famer in favor of you, what exactly is your issue here? Are you really mad at the perception that you had to prove yourself? What kind of sense is that? Were the Spurs not the one team that believed in you?

I’m not watching all this cause I don’t f with SJax, but just this small bit is enough. All that loyalty and love talk, just talk. The stuff over the summer about him talking smack on IG, seems like how he really feels. Man, sad to see, DJ always talks about being real but he just isn’t.

  6. NoBlackberry5077

If that is how he personally felt that’s fine. Dejounte is still one of my favorite players , but he needs to keep it a buck with himself. He was super raw coming out of college and was always going to be a development project so not sure why he feels like the team did him wrong by not playing him much. Also our timeline during that period was needing a veteran point guard to help Kawhi run the offense and thankfully for us we had a future hof on our roster who would hopefully later pass the keys to a young PG. Funny how people try and change the past to fit a narrative. End of the day DJM was still a great part of our franchise and another example of how good we are at helping players reach their full potential.

  7. TheRealJorgeDeGuzman

Not sure what he’s upset about. Sorry you had to prove yourself and everyone didn’t roll out the red carpet for you.

  8. YokoShimomuraFanatic

Wait, he mad the Spurs signed Laprovitolla? Lmao, get over it dude, you had barely been in the league at the time.

  9. WorldClassDBag

Watch the whole interview, he doesn’t really say anything bad about the spurs. DJs just an emotional guy

  10. hhunterhh

    This just kinda… sad.

Like we loved him, he loved us. Split due to unforeseen circumstances. So now he’s tryna make himself feel better about the heartbreak by dogging on the team that made him.

It’s ok DJ, we know it hurts. Will never hate this guy.

  11. Didn’t this guy say the Spurs saved his life because they took a chance on him despite his past? Sad he feels this way now…

  12. The_Real_OneHungLo

Seeing this now making me feel less and less good about DJ. Man he was my guy.

  13. texasphotog

Does that idiot really think the Spurs brought in Laprovíttola to start over him? The guy had an unguaranteed minimum contract. The Spurs had Parker, Green, Kawhi, LMA, and Gasol that year starting.

We also had returning role players, Manu, Patty, Simmons, and SloMo.

  14. RenHisagi

I mean besides the Tony thing I’m not sure this is a bad thing, though I wonder how much kawhi influenced the Tony situation

  15. Veggiedelite90

I’d say his ego is a little out of control lately. He’s played himself into stardom so I get that. Acting like he was treated different though strikes me as self centered. Every player the spurs drafted until maybe this year had to go through the exact same thing. Earn your spot. Show you have the work ethic to deserve playing over other guys. Show you have the ability to contribute as a part of the whole. This is not dejounte specific. The whole thing with the spurs is they expect the same things top to bottom. You’re not special DJ. I’m sorry the chip on your shoulder coming into the league made you think that they were treating you differently but I mean.. the work you put in got you to where you are. Being challenged is how you grow as a player and person. Going through all that you’d think he would be happy now knowing where he got. Not complaining that it was hard or that it wasn’t fair. Duh it was hard and maybe it wasn’t fair but you wouldn’t have become the player you are now without putting in that work. I’m proud of him for how he turned out. And I hope he has great success the rest of his career

  16. Thunderhorse74

When I saw Jack sitting across from him, I knew this was going to be a shitshow.

Meh, its not that bad but it will be taken out of context and there’s a level of resentment toward the Spurs, always has, always will be, by the NBA players, fans, etc. for the low key, professional, ‘get over yourself’ attitude.

  17. asamulya

I agree with the part of Tony. But he went ahead and dissed Derrick and called him a yes man. I felt that was a low blow. He may not be more talented than you but he was a teammate and did everything right with you.

Also, his complaints about how the spurs made him earn his spot feels so stupid. A franchise took a chance on you, built you up, gave you a contract when you were coming off of ACL and no one knew if you would be good. And they send you to a good place based on your list. I don’t know how the spurs wronged him here? It’s ridiculous!

Also him comparing his situation to Kawhi? I mean he isn’t half the player that Kawhi was. Yes he can compare himself to Stephen Jackson. But, Kawhi was a different beast.

  18. Feels like the rest of the conversation might have been more positive toward the Spurs. Guess I’ll have to go watch the rest.

  19. creation88

He was never the guy and still isn’t. He was always a diva. And to think people downvoted me for saying the same thing while he was on the team.

  20. Bonesawisready5

Damn can’t really complain? His complaint about Tony is valid even if Tony has to do what is best for himself too

  21. thatdudesowrong

So disappointed.. I mean come on DJ, you knew damn well before going up there that stephen jackson would be shitting on us. You took the bait and joined.

  22. Neutral_Meat

Lot of really sensitive people in here. He’s just saying Pop tested him his first year. He’s proud of himself for getting through it sure, but there’s nothing anti spurs here.

  23. ktdotnova

At the end of the day, you became an All-Star talent, two-way player. Props to him for grinding in the gym, no doubt he’s put in the work. Same with Kawhi… 2 trips to the NBA Finals, 4 trips to the WCF, one title (close to two), back to back 60+ win seasons, runner-up in MVP voting. What else do you want from us Kawhi?

  24. callmearookie

Nah, this makes me mad, ain’t gone lie.

I have been very supportive towards DJ, but this is a very bad look for him.

I *could* understand the Tony Parker situation to an extend. I can see him being a little bullied by them and TP feeling superior… but that’s it.

First of all you go to a podcast with that punk Stephen Jackson that you know he hates the Spurs. You DJ are a damn fake person because you act liek you want influenced by others. If there there was Pop, you would be so intimidated that you wouldn’t have said a word, but since that punk was there, oh, let it go, and ride the wave too.

You made all the drama here by saying how the Spurs saved your own life and that they were the only team that believed in you… and you go here in this dumbass pdocast and say that they still looked at you the wrong way. This is some bullshit, my mna, you would have said the same for every single team, so the problem is you having prejudges over others, not the Spurs.

You complain how they didn’t give you a change but immediately then remeber how they played you over Tony in the Playoffs over the Rockets in you Rookie Season. You could drain a single jumper and the Spurs played you, and you still out there freaking complaing after being the 29th Pick. Oh, but that’s only because the people hate you, good lord.

You think you are the one that would have played immediately. Devin didn’t play a single minute in the G-League, he was better than you at that age so he never had to go through the path you did. Sochan has been a starter since he got here. Blake Wesley? G-League. He ain’t ready. What do you think you are? The SPurs do this to make their plaeyr develop better and it works well, look around the league and in the team. You wasn’t worth a damn back then because you were raw. You developed under the Spurs because they cared about you. YET, still freaking complain. Play alone in your own team, good freaking lord.

Oh, you said that you would have liked Tony to have kept it a buck with you, but you ain’t keeping a buck with the fans and the organization that have been with you for six years.

Thanks for nothing, because that’s what you left. I wish you the best and that you keep up with all these ideas of yourself being the best in the world, I truly wish you become the one, but for now, it’s not.

I know it’s not that deep but I like to write, still.

  25. siphillis

It’s wild that DJ is getting on our case for judging him silently about his upbringing, when we’re the team that gave him a shot because everyone else thought he was too problematic to take a chance on.

There’s a non-zero chance he drops to the second round without us taking the initiative.

  26. MKdemonSW

He sounds like a 17 year old egotistical kid. It all makes sense now. He’ll bounce around the league with that kind of attitude. He’s sounding like one of them fair weathered people because in his Spurs stories which is still on the Spurs YouTube channel he said the Spurs saved his life by taking a chance on him. The San Antonio Spurs develop players, they see potential and challenge you. Manu and Tony had this challenge accepted it and 2 are Hof 1 on his way. He really let 1 all star appearance based on a technicality get to his head does he think he’s Luka damn. No team with DJ as the number 1 is going to the finals he is the piece of a puzzle not the only piece. Jackson was jacking off while DJ was talking geez the look on his face. Go punch another nba fan, baffles my mind anybody would listen to Jackson or Barnes on a podcast. Jackson was a big piece of the puzzle to win the 03 championship he just didn’t fit the Spurs culture and has bitched about it every since. It was your own damn fault man.

  27. raceforseis21

Sounds like he made a lot of assumptions

  28. DevilGunManga

DJ was mad the Spurs signed Nico Laprovittola in 2016 to play backup while he was on the back-and-fort trip between Austin and San Antonio?

What an irony. We’re watching 2 guys who’re bitter with their time here because there was an Argentinean ahead of them. 😆

  29. Dude was a 29th pick, he makes it seem like he was a Top 5 pick or something smh. Who knows where he’d be without the Spurs.

  30. Cash1m0ney

So am I finally allowed to say I never liked this dude without people tryin to fight me?
Not that I disliked him or anything. Just got a bad vibe.

  31. Titronnica

Man, my DJ jersey feeling a little gross to wear now.

I don’t understand what the org did so bad to him, we took a chance on him by drafting him when he had known character issues. We took him on, allowed him to develop, pushed him to be his best–proven by his All Star nod last year, and he’s pissed about, what? The Spurs could have thrown his ass to the curb but we didn’t.

We asked him to…work hard? Which is how any player improves?

I don’t understand if this is just manufactured to keep his name in the limelight or if he has some weird issues with the franchise. But going after Derrick is low, that’s some immature shit.

  32. santimo87

The guy really needs a chip on his shoulder. He is even saying good things only that he tried to make it sound bad.

  33. parks-n-wrecked

Lol u mad bro? Our franchise loved you till the day you left miss me with this bs

  34. yeah_car

This is so strange yet on brand for him. I’m watching this waiting for his big ~bomb to show why he’s so pissed at the Spurs and… nothing? As someone else pointed out he’s really projecting here. It’s a mix of insecurity and entitlement.

When he was here I was never enthralled with him, but I did appreciate his breakout year, of course. After he left I even thought that mayyybe I misjudged him, maybe my hunch about his secretly being a not-so-nice person was wrong… but he just kinda continues to show his ass off and on. Maybe when he bounces from team to team in the future he’ll see the Spurs were actually really good to him. Or maybe not lol.

Then again, I’d like to see the rest of this interview. DJ please relax yourself and just continue to grind, my guy!

  35. Imagine thinking Pop picking you as a starter over an aging future hall of famer is a negative because Tony didn’t decide to mentor you.

  36. Dejounte and Jack are great examples of how players can be *super* delusional about their talents.

Dejounte couldn’t shoot anything other than a one-handed floater beyond 5 feet when he came into the league. Forget running point and setting others up like he can now. He was raw as hell, and his only plus attributes were his pesky defense and his work ethic. Also, despite his persecution complex, the Spurs were *literally* the only team on draft night that ignored all the ignorant BS about Dejounte being a bad apple that would ruin the reputation of the Spurs.

And then there’s Captain Jack. He can’t understand that he was **never** better than Tony or Manu. Not any year in the league. His ceiling was key 3rd option, or a good-stats-bad-team guy. If he could actually handle “real talk” maybe he could have accepted that by now.

  37. spurshead

Bruh they drafted you at the end of the first 🤦🏽‍♂️
