Glad this article was written. Wizards operate in relative anonymity and irrelevance within the city. We have diehards in the fanbase, but the majority of the folks in the DMV just don’t give two shits about this team. This is the culture that Ted has cultivated over the years and the reason why, IMO (I have no data to back this up,) they seem like a distant 4th as far as interest/popularity amongst the local pro teams behind the Commanders, Caps, and Nats. Ted is making money regardless of the perennial mediocre product he puts out year after year, so there is really no incentive for him to do anything more than what he’s currently doing with the franchise. To me, the Wizards are arguably the worst run team in the NBA.

I agree with the author that the DMV knows it’s basketball which is why we see this franchise for what it is. We need to remember that Ted allowed Ernie to make so many bad moves for so long that fans simply lost interest. We see that this team is trying to build around KP, Kuzma, & Beal but we also see that the rest of the team depth takes a major hit beyond those 3. We have to develop depth in order for fans to start identifying with this team.

I’ll give there credit they’ve done a good job marketing to the youth…I’ve seen a lot more young college age with the cherry blossom kits and other merch…despite there inconsistencies the core group is a fun team to watch
