‘Nothing lasts forever’ – Mike Dunleavy Jr. talks Warriors moving on without Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson leaves a cavernous wood uh in so many ways productivity culturally um but as you guys move forward now um how what are some of the important variables in this reset yeah I mean I think it’s keeping some of the continuity and a lot of things we’ve done um over the years um a lot of that’s not going to change obviously at times the faces do and uh in this case a rather large one but um you know we’re excited about our young group that we have that we can couple guys out here tonight that we think can fill in and um some guys we’ve added and that’s just sort of how how things evolve with organizations with teams and uh as I said the other day nothing lasts forever and um you know here we are pivoting to something different and uh I think it’s going to be good we’re excited about the things we’ve done and um you know many ways can have a better team but um you know obviously it goes without saying going to really miss Klay Thompson and um you know just his presence and and every obviously shooting but but everything he’s meant to this franchise so it’ll be different I think once Camp starts and we get going practice it’ll be especially for Draymond and staff and Steve it it’ll be a a bit of a shock but um you know what I think Clay’s in a great spot and uh we’ll move forward and I think everything’s going to be all right these are the business decisions you make when you are in the position you are in I’ve often talked to assistant coaches who become head coaches and talk about that significant slide it may be only one chair over but it feels different you are now operating as the person making those hard choices what is it like for you you know you played collegiately Le at Duke Big Time program you have a great NBA career and now you’re doing this what if what have you found it to be like in particular in those moments where the human Dynamic is part of it sure I mean look it’s it’s a little bit less basketball and probably putting out a few more fires but uh that’s you know that’s the job and um haven’t played in the league a while I understand what it’s like from a player’s perspective um if you’re traded or wave or in trade rumors those types of things so um I feel like I can communicate with these guys pretty well um I put myself in their shoes but also understand what you know what’s needed of a franchise to to put together a good product good team and um yeah there’s always tough decisions um but that’s part of this job is to be willing to do those and um you make them with conviction and and you keep moving one of your signings was uh Kyle Anderson coming over from the Minnesota Timberwolves talk about his potential fit and what it looks like yeah I mean I think a lot of times you focus in on improving certain areas of your team and I think it with a guy like Kyle it’s just like let’s add a really good basketball player he’s got great size he defends he can pass great IQ um you know he just does so many good things on the basketball court that when he’s out there you know your team’s going to do well and that was kind of our thought process with bringing him aboard um guys with high IQ and skill do really well in our system and uh we’re excited to have him he’s a very selective shooter sometimes to his detriment but I do love that he understands his strengths and weakness says the young man that just passed us uh Jonathan kaming obviously made a big jump a season ago but you guys are always because of his ceiling is so high your expectation is another leap what will that leap look like for Jonathan kaminga yeah I mean usually that year three to year four leaps a huge one and uh that’s what we’re hoping out of Jonathan this year uh he’s put the time in over the years but most especially this summer I know he’s really working hard um and I think he has a better grasp for kind of how we play how to involve himself step with Draymond wow wow doing things like that might I add uh CR crashing the glass cutting Base Line uh and Jonathan’s really he he has really gotten better each year and we feel like this could be a year he could take a huge leap and uh we we’ll be expecting that out of him you guys have had a um little bit of a uh reset on the bench too with a couple of new assistant coaches besides Steve Jerry Stackhouse and Terry st’s also back in the NBA yeah we’re excited about those guys um with ter um with Kenny moving on Kenny Atkinson will be the head coach of the Cavs now we lost Kenny Kenny had a few good years with us want a championship with him we appreciate all that he’s done and so we add in Terry who’s you know been a head coach in this league a long time been a part of championship teams I actually played for him in 2003 or four I believe with the warriors on Mike Montgomery staff so I’m familiar with Terry uh really really good basketball mind and then added Jerry Stackhouse who’s you know played in this league he’s coached in the g- league he’s coached in college he has a great wealth of experience that we’re excited to bring in so we feel like the front of our bench has really been strengthened and uh you know that’s all part of this whole process of getting better you got to get better in all areas and we think those guys will help us do that I know for the Warriors fan base it feels like 2022 was a decade ago but you guys won the championship it wasn’t that long ago right now in that series the finals against Boston when you defeated them Andrew Wiggins was arguably your second best player and how does he get back to being the guy that he was in that series and pretty much that whole season yeah I mean I think a little bit it starts now with the work he’s putting in this summer um just getting back into Rhythm uh he’s done that he’s had a he kind of had a tough go off the court I’d say the last year and a half or so and I think Andrew’s in a really good head space um and he’s putting the time in and he he’s as talented as they come in this league uh there’s there’s only so many guys that can play both ends of the court and guard multiple positions and and he’s one of them and so we’re going to just like kaminga we’re GNA rely a lot on you know Andrew to get back to the level he was at we’re excited about that and um he’ll be a part of a big part of what we do with Steve being you know obviously taking the opportunity to coach the national team very meaningful position but things happen over the summer in organization does anything shift or change or does anybody take the Reigns there while he’s doing his thing yeah it’s a little I mean we had an experience with it last year when he was AB Brad coaching USA and he will do it again this year I mean that’s the nice part about adding some assistance to our staff we got a great young player development program um these coaching staffs now are are quite large you know you get the 14 15 guys with video guys and all that so we’ve got plenty of uh plenty of Manpower on the home front to to handle our Player Development and and growth of our team this summer while Steves away but um that’ll be you know what a great experience for him I know he’s really excited about it and uh you know obviously playing having step to be able to coach him the Olympics will’ll be a special moment so we’re as a franchise excited for both those guys your phone’s about to blow up about ploud the way he’s I’m not I’m not even going to pretend that nothing’s happening out there he’s he he’s been really impressive um he’s a guy we like and uh you know just has picked up on things quickly and obviously shooting the ball well here so uh this is you know this is summer league this is what happens you I just I just voted him most likely to be shut down after a game and sign a deal with somebody I hope it’s good news for you whatever it entails [Music] [Applause] I’m [Applause]

  1. Klay asked for 40M/2yr one week before the free agency and warriors management told klay "not yet" so disrespectful to klay man

  2. "nothing lasts forever" but the organization hasnt really made any moves to help curry out this coming season

  3. Warriors need trade Stephen Curry next season and build around Podzemki ? 😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂

  4. It's insulting to not give Klay anything he wants when Draymond gets $100. I'm happy he left, I'm happy he went to a contender, whether he wins or not, he just wants to beat the Warriors as much as possible and I hope he does it. The crazy thing is what we saw last year was the worst Klay Thompson ever and it was still like an 18 ppg Klay Thompson which is just crazy to think of. The fact a guy who gets suspended constantly, ran out Jordan Poole, ran out Klay, got suspended in the Finals and who brings so much unnecessary drama to the team got paid but Klay didn't is insulting.

  5. Kerr was part of the Last Dance. He saw they didn’t get to go out, didn’t get to defend their title.

So the Warriors let the Big 3 play out the string. They missed the playoffs, it was over. And that’s okay.

  6. They brought in Dunleavy jr. to be the fall guy he already gets the hate for being a shitty player for Golden State now he gets to blow up the dynasty
