Dan Patrick Reacts To The Dallas Mavericks Winning The NBA Draft Lottery | 5/13/25
and the Dallas Mavericks win the NBA draft lottery, followed by the Spurs 76ers and the Hornets. It’s one of those moments where you’re watching and you’re watching it. It almost slowed down. I I am I’m watching. I’m going, “Oh my goodness.” So, Utah’s out and Washington’s out and New Orleans is out. I’m going uh Okay. and let’s go to break and then they come back. I gobby damn Dallas is gonna win the NBA draft lottery and we gave you a heads up yesterday. Here is Fritzy on the show. All right, Todd, you are going to manipulate the draft lottery. What is in the best interest of the NBA? My initial thought was from Durham to Charlotte that Cooper stays in North Carolina and the Hornets get the pick, but I’m actually going to go with the Mavericks after the fans got blindsided by that Lucer deal. I’d like to see Flag go to the Dallas Mavericks. All right. Okay. You kind of picked two there, but you did, you know, I guess finally focus on the Dallas Mavericks. So, I’m going to give you credit. I in fact, I text that to the Dan. I said Fritzy got it rightish and Dallas gets their man. But, you know, there’s going to be people who say conspiracy theory or why would you uh, you know, do something, go out of your way to help the Dallas Mavericks. As our good buddy Vincent Goodwill says, I’ve watched the lottery, picked up the ping-pong balls myself to see how they they’re weighed, etc. Not only is draft rigging in that way really hard to do, it’s also a federal crime. We don’t want to, you know, have something like that get in the way of our conspiracy theories. But when you do think about it, there are times when you go things that make you go, hm, so Patrick Ewing going to the Knicks, Derek Rose going to the Bulls should get a little more emphasis here because they had like a 1.8% chance to get him. And he goes to his hometown. LeBron goes to his hometown. the Dallas Mavericks don’t deserve this. But then they get Cooper flag and I’m thinking Cooper flag is there for the lottery and he’s got to be thinking please not Washington. Please not Washington. No offense to Washington DC of course but you know he goes to Dallas and you do have some veterans there. I think that will help. I don’t think the focus will necessarily be on just him. You get AD, you get Kyrie, you know, they got some younger big men, too. And I think he might be able to ease in a little bit better with a place like Dallas as opposed to Utah where he’d be singled out and uh certainly with Washington DC, but the Mavericks win the lottery and let the conspiracy theories resume. Yes, Paul, they were immediate yesterday, whether online or just walking into people outside my house. People are like, “Oh, this is classic NBA. They convince the Mavericks to quietly trade Luca to the Lakers and do him a solid on the back end.” And I mean, these were grown men walking up to me. I know. Yes, the conspiracy theories were so prevalent that we actually did it on our show yesterday with that clip you just said. If we were to manipulate the draft, where would we put him? That’s how far ahead everybody was on. So, let’s see how they rigged this. Yeah. Yeah. And I didn’t even think, but there I saw some of the threads that said, uh, oh, I see what the NBA did. You know, the Mavericks did the Lakers a solid, gave them their future with Luca. Well, we got to do something nice for them. We’re going to give them Cooper flag. Also, the speculation on where Giannis is going to go. He’s just said he would be open to a trade. He’d be open to it. Now, that’s a polite way of saying you can trade me or we’re going to trade me. I’ll decide where I want to go, but uh you know, hopefully it’ll benefit you guys because the window is closed. You know, Dame time is is over. Uh that clock stopped now with Giannis at 30. And there were a lot of analysts who, you know, they had trade scenarios for the Bucks and the San Antonio Spurs. And I was like, why San Antonio for Giannis? If I’m San Antonio and I have De’Aran Fox, Stefon Castle was the rookie of the year. I got Victor Wimbeyama. I just build it. Just add a little bit more. You’re going to need another veteran. You’re going to need somebody who’s probably in their late 20s, early 30s. And then, you know, that’ll be a steadying force that you’re going to have. I said from the time that they drafted Wanyama. Just get a point guard. Well, they have a couple of them. That will, you know, help his growth, but they have the second pick in the draft. And Ace Bailey might be the guy. Uh Ron Harper’s son might be the guy. And I did watch a little bit. I watched more Ruters basketball than I should have. And these guys, while they’re great, they didn’t even make the tournament. They they have potential. Potential means that you haven’t done anything. And I think that’s the scary part of, okay, you can add them. Is that really going to change your fortunes? And San Antonio has two draft picks. I think the second and the 14th. you know, maybe you can uh pair that together, maybe you can put together a package, maybe you could get some some pieces there. But I think San Antonio, you know, quietly did well last night and uh you know, we go back to the teams that lost, the teams that had 14% chance. Uh you know, is the lottery fair? Well, is tanking fair? You know, that’s the problem I have that you had teams that tried not to win. Maybe they weren’t trying to lose as much as they were trying not to win. I know it’s semantics here, but you know, we’ve gone through a lot of iterations of the NBA draft lottery, and I don’t know what is considered fair, but is this five consecutive years that team with the worst record didn’t get the number one pick in the the lottery in the draft? But I don’t know what the probability of that is of the worst team is not getting the number one uh pick in the draft.

Rigged. That's why the lottery system is a joke. This would be an issue in the NFL if they ever instituted it.
The NBA moved an international star to the Lakers and made the Mavs whole on the backend. Kevin Garnette called out the luka trade as an NBA move when it happened. It's more like, prove it's not rigged. But look, ping pong balls, see?
Anyone who actually believes this is rigged is an idiot. Go watch them draw the balls, how could they possibly rig this? It’s done on camera and by Earnst and Young. You think the NBA got a massive company like Earnst and Young to commit fraud? Zero chance. This is called PROBABILITY, there’s a 1.8% chance for a reason, it’s not 0%
I’m a die hard mavericks fan and boy do I feel bad for Wizards Jazz and Hornets fans like wtf are they supposed to do???
The more Dan Patrick, Vincent Goodwill (who blocked me on Twitter) and others insist that the draft lottery isn't rigged, the more I know that it IS rigged!
rigged
I know the draft lottery is a tradition and it’s unique and whatever… but I find is insane that a play-in team is picking #1 overall. The mavs could have made it to the first round of the playoffs and now they have the #1 pick. This is absolutely insane.
Dan trying so hard to use whataboutism it’s just embarrassing to watch
Yeah, people will say it’s rigged no matter what you do… but that still doesn’t mean you don’t try to improve the system. Be more transparent about it and show the lottery being picked live.
The 1.8% chance for Mavs to get it isn’t just it. It’s looking at the year they’ve had and seeing how it’s actually astronomical for it to happen. So the NBA has had a problem with being seen as rigged, but if they continue to do nothing about it people will continue to see it more so. How can the fans not see things like this as a shadow league type deal and the NBA just say it’s just the luck of the draw yet again?
If your image continues to diminish why not do something rather than continue to do nothing?
Do it live like the nfl draft show the globe n balls in real time the reactions would be amazing
Number of titles won by teams 'gifted' the #1 pick: 1
And that only happened because of an all-time Finals collapse..
I don't know if it is rigged, but I'd like to explore how it could be. If the team people in the ball draw room don't know what numbers they are associated with, then them watching is meaningless since the teams could be post ad hoc assigned to the drawn numbers. A more transparent way to do the draft would be to give each team representative the list of numbers they "own" immediately preceding the draw and then do the draw live with the teams reacting live. It would be great drama.
The NBA is giving them a mulligan for the Luka trade.
I wouldn't play Russian Roulette with a 2% chance of losing. 😅
Why can’t they just show the drawing??? Like if they don’t want the noise about its bullshit do it live on camera otherwise just like a lot of championships (every lakers title since the 80s) these things highly likely to being rigged.
People believe conspiracy theories because the NBA is a bunch of corporate slimeballs that have given everyone ample reason to not believe a word they say, ever.
"It's not rigged, I tell you!" – Tim Donaghy.
It’s not fair that a team as good as the Mavs can steal away a #1 pick from a rebuilding team like Utah Charlotte or Washington period.
Lol, federal crime, who's going to prosecute???? Wizard fans???
No one's talking about the spurs getting a number 2 pick and 14th pick
Maine goes to Dallas 🫡
You guys laugh about this but I guess you never seen LeBron on macafee saying the lottery is fixed…
Rose to Chicago is the ONLY example anyone ever talks about, obviously. No one ever talks nor even remembers Ewing to the New York Knick’s or wherever. What a ridiculous assertion. More emphasis?
FIXED
Cooper Flagg is gonna be good like maybe top 12 good but I don’t know about top 5. He’s not an ultra prolific scorer and his athleticism is good but not freakish.
Lebron went on Pat McAfee and said that he thought it was fixed that he went to Cleveland and then made the emojis on Twitter. It's probably not rigged, but the NBA isn't beating that rap at all.
it's great. tanking doesn't benefit the teams anymore.
Haven’t seen anything more blatantly rigged since Super Bowl 50 when the NFL gave 4head his retirement ring.
Can't tell me this is not set up …
Our country is addicted to conspiracy theories. As Dan said, manipulating the lotto is a crime. It is rare that everyone involved would be able to keep their mouths shut.
refs betting on games using crypto and beard bettors…
Every year there's a 10-15% chance one of the low chance teams will win the top pick. But to have the top 3 be Mavs, Spurs, and 76ers is VERY rare. But overall, you'd look for this to happen decently often…
Maybe teams shouldn't tank? Maybe they should develop their players and not rely on losing games. I'm glad the a Team like the Mavericks that is actually making moves to try and win now get rewarded.
Wemby going to the Spurs felt sketchy to me.
Being able to go from the play-in to #1 overall pick is the real crime
Ewing to the Knicks, Rose to the Bulls, Lebron to the Cavs, Ayton to the Suns.
I can see the optics here. I get the conspiracies. But also, math. Incredibly unlikely things happen every single day. Try to keep your head on.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It’s fixed
I heard Cooper is a groyper tho so he doesn’t wanna play for Adleson
Mavs Baby! Let's Goo!
Cooper Flag is probably very happy 😃
Sports are fixed
