Magic OVERPAID for Desmond Bane? KOC Thinks Orlando NAILED the Trade!

the Magic traded for Desmond Bane they gave up Contavius Caldwell Pulp Cole Anthony the number 16 pick and three future first round draft picks and a pick swap they gave up Phoenix’s first rounder in 2026 their own first in 28 and 30 and a top two protected pick swap in 29 they sent that to the Grizzlies they get back Desmond Bean what were your initial first impressions of the trade i loved it i I think that if you’re if you’re the Magic and you see this window of opportunity emerging in the Eastern Conference you have to make a move and I think that they made the perfect move because what were they lacking last year for this season they were last in three-point shooting and they had no one that could create outside of Fron and Paulo well guess what now you got Desmond Bane in there who can play off ball he averaged over five assists the last two years in his career so I think he’s a guy that can play a multitude of roles for them he can handle the ball obviously he’s a knockdown shooter 41% from his career from three that’s what they needed and I’m surprised that there’s so much uh backlash for the amount of value it took to get him especially when they came out today uh from Tim Bon Thompson that there were several teams that were interested in Bane so I appreciate that the Orlando Magic were like “Nah let’s get this deal done buy now i’m I’m going to overpay a little bit.” But in my mind I don’t even know that those other two first round picks are even going to convey because with Bane signed till 28 29 the Magic if they stay healthy are going to compete and they’re going to be a good team so there’s no no guarantee that’s even going to be that worthy of a draft pick anyway so I don’t know i think this I think this whole I think the NBA community is a little too wrapped up with these future picks and I think that’s a great that’s a great move for the Orlando Magic they got better that’s the goal of the game get better in the offseason they did that they gave up really one very valuable pick and that could be valuable the 2026 Suns other than that I mean you gave up a pick in this year’s draft you could get a good caller a player at 16 but it’s not like you’re getting a guaranteed star there or anything like that and the picks in 28 and 30 as you said could be number 30 it could be number 22 it could be number 25 like this the the like are you really worried about picks in 28 and 29 and 30 when the East is wide open today and you’re trying to go win a championship and you’re addressing your key need you were 23rd in three-point attempts this past season last in three-point percentage and then you go out and get one of the best shooters in all of the NBA Desmond Bane in his career 38.5 on dribble jumper threes 43.2% 2% on total three-pointers off the catch that includes 41.9% on threes off the on the move so this means like offscreens dribble handoffs relocations stuff like that movement threes 45.1% on standstill threepointers those are when like he’s just spotting up in the corner the dude is an automatic shooter and with Bane playing in Memphis obviously he had success there that’s why the Magic are giving up two okay role players and four first round picks because he had a good career in Memphis but he’s also never been in an ideal situation with a big man or a big forward for twoman actions we barely ever saw him run dribble handoffs with a guy like Apollo Beno like a France Vagger like a Wendell Carter for that matter who was capable of passing from the center spot so I think for Orlando you’re getting a guy who is an elite shooter very good at driving to the basket averaged five plus assist in two consecutive seasons he’s a solid playmaker as well he’s got size on defense so you don’t lose a lot there on that end of the floor and KCP was awful last season he looked washed hurt overtaxed with his role all of the above and Cole Anthony who’s just a you know up and down spark plug guard here and there off the bench i think for the the Magic this is a step one to me they need a step two and that starts with the draft and a little bit over the week they have the 25th pick still and the 46th and the 57th pick in the second round in my mock draft I have them taking Rashier Fleming with that 25th pick and and we’ll see keep it but Rashier Fleming if you look at his scouting report he is a rockolid role player he is a guy who can hit spot up threes attack a close out for you play solid defense and to me these are the types of guys the Magic have to be going for here rasher Fleming’s types of guys in the late first and in the second round because it can’t just be Desmond Bane as your shooter you still need more shooters whether it’s in the draft or whether it’s in free agency or another trade so I’m curious do you have a veteran in mind you’d like to see the Magic trade for or a prospect in this year’s draft you’d like to see them go out and get because they still need more than Bane the Shooters yeah I think Rasheed Fleming is actually a really good a really good place for him um I actually feel like he should be ranked higher in in a lot of the draft the draft boards that I’ve seen just I think it’s maybe because he played at St joe’s or whatever but he just does he does everything on offense he does everything on defense he can rebound well i love his size at 69 um I think he’d be a great fit and I think it’s also a pivot off of what Orlando’s been doing the last several seasons is drafting these you know Caleb Houston and Jet Howards like very one-dimensional type players like shooters um so you already got the shooters on your bench i don’t know if they’re the ones that are going to be the ones that make it out but I’m actually pretty encouraged by the fact that they just got Bane i think they’re on the right track i would try to see if I could upgrade the center spot i’m not I don’t know if I I have as much confidence in Wendell Carter as you do um but I do think that getting Mo Vagner back will be crucial for their second unit once he went down with a torn ACL last year I think that also hurt their their ability to score off the bench and and kind of labor through those those non um Paulo and and Fron’s minutes but yeah I think if I’m the Orlando Magic I think you got to address add a little bit more something to the to the big man room maybe you can leverage trading off some of those shooters that you drafted in the past couple years that haven’t really amounted to anything um but I think Rashier Fleming is actually a really good landing spot and that’s something someone that would be hyperactive someone you can plug in right now right

The Orlando Magic made a major splash by trading for Desmond Bane — sending out KCP, Cole Anthony, the No. 16 pick, and three future firsts. Kevin O’Connor and Dan Titus break down why this deal makes sense for the Magic, Bane’s ideal fit next to Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, and what the team still needs to address in the draft or free agency. Is this just step one for a Magic breakout in the East?

  1. I ran the numbers on this and we need to decline all of our options that would be on Gary Harris Corey Joseph Caleb Houston and Mo (resign later) with all of those options and Bane we are 6.6 mil over the first apron. The three options minus MO is 12 million. It doesn't leave us very much. I have a feeling from Jeffs conference that JI maybe on the move. He mentioned all of our young players hinting that they will not be moved.

    Bane replaces Kcp
    #25 for Cole.

Ji is making 15 mil, thats 3 players at 5 mil each. Trade JI for picks or a player and picks. We can sign these Free Agents
    SG/SF Amir Coffey 4-5 mil
    27 years old 40%+ FG & 3pt
    PF Jake Laravia 4-5mil
    23 years old 40%+ FG & 3pt
    PF/C Guerschon Yabusele
    4-5 mil
29 years old 50/38% sixers want him but tight Salary.
Resign Mo for whats left to stay under salary cap. Unload Jett 5 mil for Tyus Jones. 44/41% bench full of shooters.
