Tim LaComb: Utah Jazz are in position to land a good player in the NBA Draft with multiple option…
djpk it’s 975 the zone we’re joined now by Tim Lome Utah Jazz analyst for SCG Media tim good morning a nice slice by Hatch right there to bring us in thank you paul McCartney is very with a little love we can work it out i agree 100% agree paul McCartney is 82 today so he’s the artist we can figure out the whole damn thing as he said now I’ve seen you in concert i don’t really see you covering McCartney songs you ever cover McCartney song no but you know I like a challenge and for that one I’d need some things that sound like they’re from another world i remember hearing synthesizers for the first time and melted my brain you remember that too DJ i know you do with with great detail you probably know where you were standing and what you were wearing but I don’t have that kind of memory or recall i don’t remember where I was standing what I was wearing nice all right let us discuss a couple of things with you right now Tim shall we the NBA draft is bearing down now some of the information floating around out there it’s lion season as Walt Parn used to say so a lot of things could uh just be made up a whole cloth that throw people off the scent but Ace Bailey is dropping like a rock and many people including PK about a month ago are saying Ace Bailey not really the Jazz guy now it turns out he might not be other people’s guy i’ve seen him as low as six some speculation he could even fall to seven or eight which seems extreme to me but hey I didn’t think Sher Sanders was going to fall to the fourth round either i thought he could fall but I didn’t think he was falling out of the first round that was surprising to me anyway so I could see Bailey dropping to six do you think he could drop to six or could he drop further and most importantly do you think the Jazz will pass on him if he’s on the board well there was a lot to unpack there let me just say that start from the very beginning i think it is a good healthy dose of lying season yep um and I think everything you got to you got to take everything with a grain of salt and look at it through different lenses i I think that’s the key and and these organizations are very uh very strong you know financially they they spend money during this process to try to figure that out to try to gain an advantage and certainly no one you know in those offices is calling around shooting the bull with anyone saying this is what we’re going to do um so that stuff’s kept kept really tight and so I think it’s really at that point it becomes now to have a plan ready because the draft itself is done in real time um you know every all these mock draft guys get to study and and you know then conjecture for 30 minutes on the radio why they took their pick but you know in in the draft room that thing comes and goes pretty quickly so um you’re also responding to what other teams are doing so there’s always that take too um with the Ace Bailey stuff you know I I with my own eyes you know the things I see really intrigue me um you know certainly what I’m hearing through the the game of Liars Poker there’s there’s things that are concerning but at the same time you have to take all that knowing that you know games are being played and and there have been a lot of guys that have slid um you know that that have have outperformed their slide and so that that’s been done before in history so it’s just a matter of trying to make the right decision for you um I would say this I think the Jazz are in a spot to get a really good player you know I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple weeks watching um and I think at the very least two guys that I think are really good rotational type guys in the NBA that could with a little bit of development could become more you know I think are sitting right there with Conanipple and Trey Johnson um but when you look at like star power and star value and you you scrub your brain of all that other stuff you know I think there’s a chance that Ace Bailey slides and is an all-star um his shot making is unbelievable and the stuff that he’s kind of nicked on is stuff that you know culturally you can address and having veterans around i mean that’s the whole thing of the NBA and so um you know I think from a talent standpoint I think he if he’s sitting there that’s another option and we’ll get into you know what the Jazz would do in a minute because I don’t necessarily know but you know I’ll play the game of liars poker too uh the other guy that you know intrigues the literal hell out of me is Jeremiah Fierce um he’s a G name that’s not being talked about a lot but when I watch his tape um he’s he’s he’s another guy I think in that range that has all-star potential um so th those kind of my thoughts and then you can react i have multiple reactions that was excellent you talked all around the name and did not mention VJ Edge i think he’s gonna be gone excellent point i think he’s high higher regarded and also totally agree he’s one of those dudes he’s one of those dudes DJ that another team covets and Philly’s willing to move or whatever and they they slide in to get him so I just think there’s there’s too much buzz about him one through i just I just think he’s gone 100% agree with you i think he’s gone too i I don’t think he’s last until five i get why Jazz fans have talked him up i’ve seen a lot of stuff on social media from a lot of Jazz fans who are out there watching the tape and because he played in the Big 12 they actually you know watched his games i mean he was projected to be in this range all along and they love him and I think yeah for all the reasons you love him he’s not going to be on the board so we can set that aside we both think he’s gone either Philly takes him Charlotte takes him or somebody trades up to take him but he is more likely gone than on the board so having said all of that I’ve heard that one thing Austin really values and I’ve heard this I haven’t heard it a lot but I believe it from the person who told me this is that he values tough-nosed nasty highly competitive people and he puts Everybody values that everybody says they value that right but he really does in a way that other people don’t so let’s assume first off do you think that’s true and second off which player has that so if it comes down to there’s a lot of players of similar size similar skill set but if he sees a guy with that who’s it going to be well I I think I think that’s you know a true statement in some respects but at the same time you know every single person in basketball you know the one thing you can’t see enough of is talent you know you cannot see enough of a guy shooting the ball in the hoop and and you will find ways to coax yourself into siding with the guy that makes more shots um I remember and this is a funny story i used to you know recruit for a living for right for BYU and you know it was one of my main jobs so I was out playing somewhere or playing I was out watching a guy somewhere and then you know the the process was he plays good you line up an opportunity for coach to come see him and you make that journey out there together and you know it’s almost like Lion King you you hold up the recruit in front of coach to see if he’ll bless it and um it wasn’t quite that dramatic but you know just adding color but we went out and the dude did not make a shot I don’t think I think he hadn’t made probably the worst night of his life and you know coach was not a guy during that would say anything just kind of watched it all talked to the kid after we’re walking out to the car afterwards and he said hey just make a note of this it’s and he said it just this way it it’s probably more important for a guy to make shots when I’m in the building uh you know if he he can’t shoot when I’m in the building we probably shouldn’t recruit him um because he’s you know I’m going to be on the sideline a lot when he’s playing so he kind of just gave me a little dig but I guess my point long-winded is you will find a lot of reasons to like a guy who can really play um and but toughness and hard nose that’s certainly a part of it you go back to can that be again can that be taught culturally can that be taught the way that things are taught in jobs you know on the job like no no you know dude that’s Rook that’s not going to work you know you got to do this and so you’re hoping for some of that so if you can draft it all in one piece yeah go get it it’s called Cooper Flag but outside of that I think I think you have to find you know you have to find other options you have to find things that stand out and to me it’s like what’s the ceiling what’s the star power um and that’s why I I mentioned those two names i think Fears Fear’s just watching him play and knowing how the NBA’s played he he’s unbelievably good in ball screen but where he’s great when a big switch is on to him it’s night night i mean it is you know a hesy a crossover a step back um but he’s he’s making his decision and that big is is a step behind him almost every time um you know there’s a couple SEC teams as you go through this process you know call around and talk to people um I have a couple connections to the SEC believe it or not um and was talking with a couple of guys out that way and and you know I mean it’s just people that know no and and that’s what they said about fears is you know we dedicate our whole game plan to him and you know we do this and we do that and he was beating our doubles and he was splitting them and he was exposing our bigs and he was constantly in our guts and that’s what I see in his film um that really makes me go that you know and then and then the intangible stuff the other stuff his leadership i you know he’s a gregarious kid you know that engages off the floor and on the floor he’s very vocal so those are just you know little tidbits I see on the tape as I watch okay that was an awesome drop yacht can you cut that he is constantly in our big flag no he was constantly in our guts man well that’s what you you know that’s what you feel like you’re getting I mean your whole your whole aim in basketball is to keep people out of your yard because you know you you get beat you get bit a study diet of layups and dunks will get you beat yep or or you know then you then you give way too much to dunks and everything and then the three ball starts i mean go watch some of our St mary’s film um back in the day i mean it’s what they did to you uh so if you can get somebody can do that and the one thing the Jazz have I think they got a guy who can really push tempo and call you um in the half court certainly can beat a guy um but not a guy who’s really going to get guys leaning he’s a straight line guy i feel like Keont is more of a straight line guy so I think that’s why this kid kind of stands out to me so I guess my biggest point is with the with those four guys sitting there and the way the draft jostles it’s going to be interesting but my point is the Jazz are set to get a I think they’re set to get a really good player which you would expect at five is Malage who apparently is showing well in workouts obviously we don’t get to see that but he’s showing skill that he didn’t get to use at Duke can’t blame the Duke coaching staff if they said go to the front of the rim catch the alleyoop and dunk it uh but apparently he can do more than that and he’s showing good mobility is there any chance he comes flying up uh we had Brian Gueltzer on and he’s like the the craziest but smartest thing that a team like the Jazz could do is draft Malach and trade Kesler and you’d have a young big on a rookie contract who’s going to be really good and Kesler’s good and you can get real value for him does that strike you as the craziest thing you’ve ever heard or you think bold but solid let’s do it no I mean I actually you know you go down those roads in your head and I thought that through i think the the disconnect there is you can’t just assume that that you know right as that Malawak comes into the league he’s going to be able to lead the NBA in contested defensive rebound percentage which Walker Kesler was nowhere near his first year you know so like there there is a everybody wants to like drive through and order yes I’d like an all-star with a side of uh salad And yeah can you make that cocoa large you just don’t do it that way right there’s there’s process involved and these guys actually have to get into the league feel it understand it um you know get written off his busts in year one and then have to come back and face the music and then you know so what I’m saying is I think Walker Kesler’s to me that’s not a piece that I would be just throwing around you know because I think that dude that dude’s got some real things to him um now the but the idea of it you know the idea if you’re just plugging tall guy for tall guy I could see that um but I think there’s a little more to that one well I could talk basketball with you for a while but the fact is you probably need to go work on that Paul McCartney cover yeah you got any requests for me that I could work on for you send a little I’m just curious if you would go Beatles or Wings i mean if it’s me I would say you should go Beatles uh not that you know he didn’t have some hits with Wings because he did but I’ i’d go Beatles all right i I’ll do I’ve got Come Together down i’ll just I’ll go down maybe I’ll put a hat on because my hair doesn’t look so good right now it’s fresh out of the sack okay well thanks for that it was a late night watching DJ so and a late you know I don’t have to be to work i don’t check in to start taking customers till about 11 i’m just kidding i’m
