Evan Mobley and Donovan Mitchell Are UNTOUCHABLE in Trades for the Cleveland Cavaliers | Is DG too!?

on today’s show trade season almost here in the NBA it’s coming up in the next couple of weeks who has the most trade value on the Cavs who has the least we’re going to talk about all of that and off your first purchase there will be trades there have been trades already made we saw Desmond Bane traded from Memphis to Orlando we saw the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday make a draft specific trade that didn’t involve any player movement with the New Orleans Pelicans and there will be plenty more trades to come over the next days and weeks especially once the NBA finals wrap up the Cavs may or may not be involved in some of those deals as we went over on yesterday’s show I think that a lot of the stuff with the Cavs a lot of the trades with the Cavs are going to be very complicated and they are very difficult to pull off with where the Cavs are at financially right now with the reality of the new collective bargaining agreement and the Cavs being forced to operate as a team that is currently inside the Second Apron so that is going to be a challenge for them but an exercise I wanted to go through for today’s show was I wanted to go through the roster and kind of rank where everybody that is under contract for the Cavs sits in terms of the value that they would have on the trade market now it’s important to be under contract um like Tai Jerome while he technically right now is still on the Cavs Ty Jerome does not count because he is a free agent as soon as the new league year starts sam Merrill same thing tristan Thompson was on a one-year deal javvante Green was on a one-year deal like it is a a thing to where those guys can’t be traded so they’re not part of this not going to say their names the rest of the podcast because they don’t matter for this discussion but what I have done here is I have gone through and I have ranked the 11 players that the Cavs have the rights to or that the Cavs have under contract because if you look at somebody like Craig Porter Jr his contract not fully guaranteed but the Cavs essentially can say we are guaranteeing your contract he for all intents and purposes is under contract chuma Oki club option for this year the Cavs can say no we can we are declining your club option you’re going to be a free agent or they can pick it up like that is the thing that you look at and say okay either of those two things could happen so I do have that because they make the decision so starting at the top and I don’t think it is particularly close i think Evan Mobley by far has the most value on the trade market the Cavs are not going to trade him he is untouchable this is not a thing whereas if he were to he’s not going to pop up in trade discussions this summer that’s not happening that’s not going to happen if ever for a very very long time but if the Cavs wanted to make Evan Mobley available he would get an absolute hall yes contract five years $269 million of course this will be year one of that five-year deal coming up and it is I hesitate to say a bargain but I do think he’s worth it i think that this is a valuable contract to have even if it is incredibly expensive where it’s starting at $46 million next year but you’re talking about a guy who in his fourth year in the NBA was defensive player of the year second team allNBA first team all defense um he is somebody that his stock I think is going to continue to rise i think that three to five years from now we are going to have the discussion about whether or not and maybe even sooner than this but I think we are he’s the type of player that we’re going to be discussing could this guy win an MVP this year now I’m not saying that about this upcoming season evan’s not there right now but I think that in the future we will have those discussions about him i’m not saying that he is a future MVP i do however think he is a future first team allNNBA player he is an impact player on both sides of the ball he’s going to in my opinion be a perennial all-star i think he’s going to be a perennial AllNBA player whether that’s first second or third team um I think like if you look at a three-year span for Evan Mobley he’s the type of guy that I think is going to be an allNBA player two of those three years at least if not all three that’s the type of player that I think he is that’s the type of player I think a lot of teams in the NBA across the league think that he is he is somebody that if the Cavs again they’re not doing this they should not even think about doing this but if the Cavs were to make him available via trade he would by far command the most back not just of anybody on the roster but if you look at the guys that are widely considered to be available this summer none of them pull a candle to what it would take for a team to trade for Evan Mobley if you look at and I don’t think Giannis is going to get traded i don’t think he’s going to ask for a trade but I think that you’re looking at a package kind of similar to that to what the Milwaukee Bucks would command for Giannis not saying that Evan is the same player as Giannis not saying that he will even get to that stature but when you consider the fact that he is seven years younger than Giannis um and obviously has a much longer runway to be great than I think Giannis does at this point I think those packages look pretty similar that’s the type of value that Evan Mobley has i think that he probably has at this point I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that he is one of the probably top 12 players in terms of trade value rankings in the NBA at this point in his career and that is an awesome awesome awesome thing to have on the roster for the Cavs again they’re not trading him they shouldn’t even think about trading him that’s not part of the discussion but if they were they would get just an absolutely incredible hall for him guy number two on my list is Donovan Mitchell i do not believe Donovan Mitchell is as valuable in the trade market as Evan Mobley for a couple of different reasons one of them is certainly his age one of them is how much more of his prime he has left i have no reason to believe that Donovan Mitchell is slowing down anytime soon but I also don’t think that his ceiling is as high as Evan Mobley and of course the contract comes into play too so Donovan Mitchell as we know signed a contract extension with the Cavs last summer that contract extension three years for $150 million that third year is a player option so Mitchell is under contract this year will be the first year of that extension fully guaranteed for next season i’m talking the 2026 2027 season and then the year after is that’s a player option he can opt out can become a free agent the summer of I believe 2027 is when he can become a free agent so that certainly has to play into this if you’re trading for Evan Mobley you’re trading for five years if you’re trading for Donov Mitchell you are trading potentially for only this year and next year because of that player option but Donovan I do think would command a lot if he were made available and again very similar to Evan he’s not available he should not be available this is not a discussion that is being had this is just kind of what he would be worth and I think that you’re talking about getting back an all-star caliber player i think you’re talking about giving back multiple picks um I look at this sort of as well what did the Cavs give the Utah Jazz when they traded for Donovan Mitchell back in September of 2022 they gave up Lowry Markin who I don’t necessarily know think that we thought of as an all-star caliber player at that time now he has developed into a very nice player um Colin Saxon via sign and trade of course a nice piece otayabaji who has since been traded from the Utah Jazz but had not played an NBA game yet plus a handful of draft picks which don’t look like very valuable draft picks at this point so much so that the Utah Jazz have traded some of them already like the Phoenix Suns this year actually have the Cavs draft pick coming up in a couple of weeks because the Jazz didn’t want it they said “Well that’s going to be the 29th or 30th pick we are going to send that elsewhere.” And that’s exactly what they did but with that I think if the Cavs were going to trade Donovan Mitchell right now because I think that right now Donovan Mitchell is a better basketball player than what he was when the Cavs acquired him i think that he has improved as a player i think that he has reached a level I did not know he would reach um when he got to Cleveland he had never been an AllNBA player before it’s not as if he wasn’t great but he got to a new level where his first year in Cleveland he was second team AllNBA in my opinion i thought he should have been first team AllNNBA last season he did not make an AllNBA team because he did not reach the 65game rule and then this season that just concluded of course made his first career allNNBA team that’s the type of player he is if the Cavs were to trade him I don’t think they would be able to get as much for as they would for Evan Mobley but I think if they wanted to trade Donovan Mitchell tomorrow the asking price should be more than they gave up for him i think that he just like if you’re talking about the value of him as a player I think he is somebody that has appreciated in value over the past three seasons that he’s been in Cleveland so I think he’s number two when you’re talking about who has the most trade value number three for me is Darius Garland and Darius I think has a lot of value and I think that is what makes this off season so complicated we’re going to talk about that next right here on Locked on Cavs today’s show is brought to you by Game Time there’s nothing like the NBA playoffs which could be con concluding tomorrow night the intensity the buzzer beers fans losing their minds and you could go because it’s just a short drive away from me playoff games are the best whether it’s basketball baseball football which I don’t know what that’s like because there’s not ever been in my life a playoff football game in the city of Cleveland um but that’s a different story for a different day we can talk to Spencer German about that at a certain point but if you want to get in the door to a playoff game maybe even a regular season baseball podcasts Apple Spotify anywhere else make sure you hit us with a fivestar rating and Darius Garland is number three for me on my list of guys with the most trade value in Cleveland now Garland is in the middle of his contract he has three years and $125 million all that fully guaranteed remaining on the five-year contract that he signed so now at this point Moy and Mitchell were easy because they are both starting brand new extensions this upcoming season nobody else on on this list is in that case so as I move forward starting with Garland I will be reading off their contract with what they have left not their contract in total like Darius Garland’s contract was much larger than three years $125 million but that is what is still owed on that deal but to me he’s number three and I think this is a lot of what complicates things because there’s been some chatter out there about the way the Cavs can improve as trading Darius Garland and could they sure i don’t necessarily think it’s as easy as just saying “Yeah trade Darius Garland.” Because he is a player that while I personally think is still improving is still getting better is not a guy that I would want to be in the business of trading he is somebody that if you’re going to trade him you’re going to ask for a lot back but he’s also an unproven playoff performer he is somebody that does have an injury history he is somebody that considering where the Cavs are at in terms of the types of restrictions that they have on any trades that they can make I think it would be very very difficult for them to get equal value back particularly when if you’re trading Darius Garland you’re not doing it to press the the refresh button you’re not doing it to jump start a rebuild if you were trading Darius Garland to jump start rebuild I think it’d be a pretty easy trade to make because you say “Okay give me one good player and four first round draft picks that are unprotected boom we have a deal.” The Cavs can’t do that the Cavs can’t say “Give me four good first round picks and one okay player that maybe I can flip elsewhere.” If the Cavs were to trade Darius Garland and I think this is kind of where we’re going to get to with the rest of this list too it’s a situation where it’s it has to be a trade that makes the Cavs better right now it has to be a trade that puts them in a position to where they feel as if maybe they didn’t improve from a talent standpoint but they have to look at themselves and say “We like ourselves better when April May and June roll around than we did with Darius Garland.” I think that’s a very tight needle to thread and I just don’t think there are a lot of trades out there but I really do think that speaks to how valuable Darius Garland is that you’re not going to give him away you’re not going to be ripped off in any sort of trade like that and that’s why I think he’s the third most valuable asset that the Cavs have i don’t think that they should trade him um I think he’s very valuable i think he’s seen across the league is pretty valuable and I think when you look at what the Orlando Magic gave up to get Desmond Bane I think Darius Garland would probably require more than that because I look at this and I have no doubt that Darius Garland is a better player than Desmond Bane number four on my list is DeAndre Hunter now Hunter was of course acquired by the Cavs at the trade deadline for Caris Levert George Nang and some second round picks hunter’s contract left is two years and $48 million remaining on that deal that he signed with the Atlanta Hawks hunter of course is a two-way wing very good offensive player was a little bit admittedly a little bit disappointed with who he was as a defender in Cleveland but I do think that he is a very valuable player he is certainly the type of player that I think and I I hate to say this because when you say this you are comparing this player to that player but I’m more so comparing like a guy this size he is the type of player or the size of wing player the Cavs have been searching for since LeBron left in no way shape or form is he anything like LeBron James but since LeBron left they’ve just not had a 6’7 6’8 wing that can kind of do everything DeAndre Hunter can do so that is something that he has such a I think he has so much positional value and I think that he is probably a little bit more valuable right now than when the Cavs acquired him because of the contract not because he’s a better basketball player i don’t think that he necessarily got better in Cleveland although he did shoot the basketball very very well in the half a season he played with the Cavs but two years and $48 million left I think is a pretty pretty good number to have DeAndre Hunter at i think that it’s a pretty appetizing number and part of the reason why I think he’s fourth as opposed to Jared Allen is the contract two years 48 I think is a number that a lot of teams could stomach the end is sort of in sight it is 23 million this year like 23 and a half this year and 24 and a half next year along those lines but it is a very it’s a very palatable number and I think that is something that matters here and that’s why I actually don’t have Jared Allen next i have Max Duce as the fifth most valuable contract the Cavs have in terms of the trade ratings i have him there because one I think he plays a more valuable position than Jared Allen being that swingman that guy that can play the two or the three he also is on a very very manageable contract two years $32 million he’s making 15 and change this year 16 and change next year so it’s not as if Max I don’t think Max is a better basketball player than Jared Allen i think Max Truce plays a more valuable position i think Max is more versatile i think Maxus has a better contract i don’t think that you’re getting a ton for Max Shus in the same way I don’t think you would be getting a ton for DeAndre Hunter but I look at that and say okay these guys might not be your best players but they play a more premium position they play at a pretty manageable contract number max I do think is somebody that is a playoff riser if you will somebody that when and I know that he had such an awful game five against the Pacers but for the most part in that series in the first four games I thought he was kind of the only Cavs role player i was like that guy’s doing enough that guy’s playing well enough to help the Cavs win and so many other guys weren’t i think that stuff is all valuable and if I were the Cavs I would look into extending Max Stre this summer now the number has to be right you can’t overpay for him but he’s somebody that I do think a contract extension could make sense for because I think he’s a the type of player that every winning team should want he’s a role player that helps your team win and I think that’s a very very important thing to have because look at what’s going on in the finals right now not to compare him to a guy like TJ McConnell because they play different positions but TJ McConnell I think has been a better player in this postseason than he’s been at any other point in his career i don’t think he’s ever reached the levels that he has reached this postseason um if you look at Alex Caruso I think the same can be said for him and of course he’s already won a title as a member of the Lakers but Max has kind of done this these sort of things on those types of stages going dating back to his days in Miami i think he’s a playoff riser and if you can get a playoff riser on your roster for $15 million a year maybe he shouldn’t be a starter maybe he should be the sixth man but no matter what role he’s in on this roster he is somebody that I look at and say “That guy’s got a lot of value that guy is somebody that you should want on your team and I think if you say all of those things and add in the position that he plays I think it’s pretty fair to say okay that guy is pretty valuable that is a guy that I think would have a lot of value in a trade all right we’ve got a handful of guys left plus one other thing I want to toss in we’re going to get to Jared Allen though next right here on Locked on Cavs today’s show brought to you by Ollipop it’s a new kind of soda made for people who love the classic taste of soda that is just like me i had one of these not this one because this can soda i would I still enjoy the occasional soda um and those if you know anything they don’t exactly come with a ton of health benefits right like you’re not necessarily drinking that stuff certainly as a kid because you want to be healthier you’re drinking it because it tastes good well what if I told you that you can have something that does taste good that does give you that oh I don’t know this week so if you’ve got questions if you’re watching on YouTube comment them on this video or you can always email them to me the email for questions is loaves mailbaggmail.com locavsmailaggmail.com easy enough to remember but let’s get back to our trade value rankings jared Allen to me is the number sixth ranked guy on this list allen has four years and $110 million left on his deal the deal that he previously signed was a great contract it was flat at $20 million a year he will be entering the final year of that deal of course Alen signed a contract extension last I believe it was early August i think it was August 2nd if I if my memory serves me correct because there were four days that he was eligible to be traded this past season obviously he was not traded but four years $110 million left on that deal and this is where he is somebody that I still think has positive value i don’t think the Cavs should be trading him just to trade him but this is the point in the exercise where we are no longer talking about very good contracts because Jiren Allen is a very good player no one should fight you on that i don’t necessarily believe in him as a postseason performer all of the things I just said about Max Truce as a playoff riser I do not believe to be true for Jared Allen i don’t think Jared Allen’s a playoff riser i think Jared Allen might be a playoff faller if that makes sense somebody that is better in the regular season than he is in the postseason and Allen is a terrific regular season player but he’s not been a terrific postseason player and this contract well contract extension that he signed three years roughly $90 million added on to the previous contract that I believe was five years and $80 million or four years and $80 million five years $100 million it was $20 million a year that’s the whole point there but that deal will take him into his 30s because he’s going to be 27 for the duration of the next regular season we’ll turn 28 just as the playoffs start next year but then he’s going to he’s not somebody that I look at and say “Yes this guy is still getting better.” I think Jared Allen is somebody that probably has reached his peak as a basketball player and his peak as a basketball player is a borderline all-star and he’s a very very good player somebody that does a lot of things that I don’t know how the Cavs replace but my immediate thought would be well the Cavs can replace some of those things with Evan Mobley and can they replace the rest with somebody else that they’re not paying $20 million a year this year and then paying more to next year where it jumps up to 28 and then to 30 and then to 32 because his next contract is not flat the way this one was his next contract has raises built into it which is part of the reason why Jared Allen’s value on the trade market I think probably peaked a year and a half ago i think it probably peaked a year and a half to two years ago the Cavs I do think if they were to trade Jared Allen which again I think they should be interested in doing at least interested in listening to offers I think they should want to get back two rotation players that make roughly $10 million i think that’s a challenge certainly but I think that is what the asking price should be he to me if the Cavs are if it’s open season on guys on the Cavs to me Jared Allen is the sixth most valuable guy up next for me number seven not actually a player it is the 2031 first round draft pick that the Cavs have this is the tradable first round pick that they have of course so much of their draft had been traded to the Utah Jazz and some of that has been rerouted elsewhere for Donovan Mitchell back in the day um I think that this pick is not going to be a great pick i think that if you are trading this pick you are pro there would be a team betting against Evan Mobley like if there’s a team that wants to trade for this pick the bet is that well Evan Moley is going to want out and the Cavs are not going to recover from that because if Evan Mobley is a Cav for the next 10 years the Cavs are going to at worst be good there’s not a world in which the Cavs have Evan Mobley on the roster if he just continues along the trajectory that he’s on and they are bottom feeders i just he I think he’s too good i think this organization is too smart i think that even if they’re not going to be championship contenders every year for the next 10 years I struggle to see worlds in which they are in the bottom three barring just unspeakable amounts of injuries so I don’t think that that pick has a ton of value but it does have some value up next I’ve got Jaylen Tyson and Tyson is somebody that we just sort of don’t know what he is he’s got three years and $12.7 million left on his deal plus restricted free agency rights so really the contract for the Cavs is three years but the Cavs basically control his rights for the next six years um that to me is value i don’t know what Jaylen Tyson is going to be i’m very intrigued to learn more about him this summer i am under the impression that he will play in summer league for the Cavs have not officially found that out but I think that is something that makes sense for all parties involved um again that has not been confirmed but that is my my expectation is that he will be in Vegas for at least part of summer league what he looks like in summer league I think will be a pretty good indication of what he’s going to be because if Jaylen Tyson shows up to summer league and doesn’t look all that impressive I think it’s fair to kind of you know maybe not feel so great about the stock there but if Jaylen Tyson shows up to summer league plays in two games looks awesome and the Cavs say “You know what you’re too good to be in Vegas right now we’re going to sit you down just hang out for the rest of this trip uh support your teammates but we’ve seen what we need to see.” I think that would be the best sign for Tyson because that sort of tells me okay this guy’s he’s going to be an NBA player he’s good enough and I do expect that to be the case i think that he will show out in the limited summer league action he gets but because we’ve not seen it enough certainly at an NBA level um he is to me number eight as far as assets go number seven as far as players go partially because as a team building society one of the things that I think people like certainly fans um less so GMs but I do think certain GMs are intrigued by it we love the unknown that is why the 2031 first round pick is added to Tyson because we have no idea what it could be i could tell you it’s going to be the number one overall pick in a loaded draft i have no clue i have no idea what seventh grader right now is going to be great in the 2031 NBA draft no clue i have no idea what that pick is worth just like we kind of don’t know what Jaylen Tyson is going to be we have like a fuzzy outline of him as a rotation player but we don’t know exactly who he is as a player or what he’s going to amount to in the NBA so that is something that certainly matters as far as this discussion goes up next I have Dean Wade and Wayade I think is a very good role player he is somebody that I think has maybe underachieved what I think he probably should have accomplished to date he’s got one year remaining on his contract that is this upcoming season at $6.6 million now Wade’s deal is I think kind of hurting the Cavs at this point not because Wade is he I think he’s outperformed his deal like if I look at him at least certainly the idea of Dean Wade is worth more than $6.6 million but I also think it’s hard to find a player that is that teams would be willing to part with because I don’t think that there are guys on rookie scale contracts that teams are going to give up for Dean Wade but it’s hard to find a role player that is making around that number that the Cavs could trade Dean Wade for like that’s just sort of a a rough spot to be in but that’s sort of where they are i do think that there are plenty of teams out there that would love to trade for Dean Wade i think he’s got positive value on the market still um and that is certainly a really good thing i just think that he should probably shoot the basketball more because it’d be better for everybody involved after him I have Craig Porter Jr he has two years $4.6 million left on his deal um the not this this upcoming season is not fully guaranteed it will fully guarantee in January and then next season is a team option craig Porter Jr is fine it’s very low price um I think he could be a throwin but nobody’s going to call up the Cavs and say “Hey we want Craig Porter Jr what do you want from them?” Like I don’t think that is really going to be a thing that happens after him i have Isaac Aordo and I have Isaac down here because I think that at this point this is a contract that is looked at across the league as a negative contract aoro has two years $22.8 million left on his deal that is $11 million this upcoming year and 11.8 $8 million next season i don’t think right now that if the Cavs traded Isaac they could trade him without having to attach at least a second round pick some sort of draft compensation to take on that contract and part of it is teams aren’t dumb they know the position the Cavs are in like all of that is not about Isaac Aoro being a negative asset now of course his play on the floor has not been good enough and that’s why he’s viewed in that light because if he were better one the Cavs probably would not want to trade him and two teams would be banging down the door trying to trade for him and those things are not happening so I do look at this and say “Okay this is not a great contract.” Um and this is something that the Cavs are looking to move i just don’t know that they’re going to be able to do it and then lastly I’ve got Jumoki he’s got a one-year $2.5 million contract it is a team option the Cavs could decline it he could reach for agency but no one no one is calling to try and acquire him the Cavs signed him for nothing they paid him I believe around $100,000 for the time spent in Cleveland last season uh he’s not somebody that I look at and say “Yeah teams really want him.” Now the Cavs could pick up that option and maybe trade him but I don’t don’t necessarily view him as somebody that has a lot of value if the Cavs were not in the second apron and could aggregate players that is somebody that I look at and say “Okay yes valuable because you can attach that $2.5 million and take something more back.” But Cavs cannot do that because they are second apron team so that is not something that is possible but those are my trade rankings in terms of who has value on the Cavs who does not have value on the Cavs would love to know if you agree would love to know if you don’t agree also a reminder mailbag on Friday get your questions in you 1. Call up the Hawks Danny…..they have a large trade exception that will expire in early July if not used. They also have 2 first round picks this year…gotta believe they would have some interedst in the hometown kid Okoro and certainly D.Wade!

  2. I disagree with everything in this podcast. Why would a team trade as much for Mitchell who’s older, more injury plagued and has hit his peak and is 6 ft 2 and relies on athleticism? You’re overvaluing this Cavs roster.
