2025 NBA Draft: Is Carter Bryant the Trail Blazers Top Target? Will They Trade Out of No. 11 Spot!?

Locked on Trailblazers your daily Portland Trailblazers podcast part of the Locked On Network your team every day what’s up world it’s your past first point guard and trailblazers reporter Mike Richmond you’re listening to another episode of Locked on Blazers part of the Locked on Podcast Network available wherever you get podcasts and also on YouTube thanks for making this show your first listen coming at you each and every weekday Monday through Friday so make it a part of your daily routine make it your first listen tell your friends to do the same it’s Locked On Blazers your team every day in today’s program it’s draft day we made it the first round of the NBA draft it’s tonight in Brooklyn uh we will talk the latest mock drafts from the pro prognosticators that know because everybody thinks the Blazers are taking Carter Bryant from Arizona we’ll get into that we’ll talk about sort of the consensus that seems to have formed at the top of the draft some teams that are trying to move in out and all around in the draft some uh some potential trades or trade interested teams and how that could impact the Trailblazers plus some notes on Matis Thyel and or a note on Matise Thyel and a stray a stray thought or six on Drew Holiday now that we are one day removed from the uh from the trade officially being reported it hasn’t it hasn’t even happened yet and we’re going to talk about it a little bit more in this show that’s what we’re going to do today let’s get into it we start with draft because it is indeed draft day we made it we made We made it everybody thinks the Blazers are going to draft Carter Bryant out of Arizona um this week ESPN released his latest mock draft on Monday with the Blazers taking Carter Bryant the uh 66 forward who played sparingly at Arizona his rookie season but just looks like you know shot pretty well from three on limited volume def has um really good block numbers he it’s uh he’s in terms of uh that profile as an elite shot blocker in terms of small minute and block percentage um a defensive playmaker an a really good athlete um you know almost a 7 foot wingspan at 67 um dude just looks like an NBA player and the bet is that the shooting sticks around the defense is there and you can find you can cobble more together uh with his offensive game uh ESPN has notably been relatively has been nails honestly quite frankly with the Blazers draft picks um and when they say you know on a couple days before the draft Carter Bryant is the name to know I think that’s meaningful and it’s also meaningful because the the previous target for the Blazers the previous prediction for the Blazers from ESPN was Kasparia Kachonis uh the big guard from Illinois 6’5 point guardish uh point guardish two guardish player from from Illinois um and and KJ in ESPN’s latest mock is still on the board when the Blazers are taking Carter Bryant and one of my sleuths out there I got sleuths out in in um I guess mostly North Portland but I got sleuths out there and one of my great sleuths pointed out that ESPN’s mock comes out in the morning with KJ still on the board and Carter Bryant hm all of a sudden a guy who hasn’t really been mocked there by at least ESPN services um all of a sudden it’s Carter Bryant all of a sudden it’s it’s it’s the it’s the young wing from Arizona hm h with K just still on the board and the Blazers reportedly agreed to trade for Drew Holiday later that night they were getting a guard they don’t need to draft one change your change the calculation a little bit um shout out to my sleuths uh the ESPN’s not the only one jonathan Wasserman at Bleach Report you know he’s got the Blazers take in Carter Bryant ricky O’Donnell at SP Nation who also uh released these are all came out on Monday uh June 23rd rick O’Donnell SP Nation new mockdraft Monday June 23rd the the Monday morning of draft week Carter Bryant Arizona sam Vini at the Athletic sam’s really really good at this um Carter Bryant Arizona at 11 some mocks do different things i want to be clear some mockdrafts do different things and I I think people struggle with this some mock drafts say are are folks who are um you know scouts and draft experts and folks who who who cover really closely cover cover really closely and form strong opinions because they’ve they’ve they’ve watched everybody and they um and and they kind of have a vision and those folks sometimes you will see people put together a mock draft that said here’s what I think they should do here’s the best player on the board here’s the right choice for a team that’s what some of the drafts some of the mocks are espn’s is not that espn’s is a predictive thing they are trying to get it right they are not trying to say here’s the right move they are trying to say here’s the move the team is trying to make um I think if the Blazers hadn’t just um made a sort of uh move to accelerate the timeline and be more competitive next season clearly they they’ve made it they’ve they’ve chosen a sort of decisive direction for this upcoming season which is to try to be like truly competitive i think the level of how truly they competitive competitive they can be uh remains largely to be seen right because I think um I don’t think adding 35-year-old Drew Holiday in in place of Afrey Simons is enough of an upgrade that it’s like yeah they’re really stinking good now but clearly they’ve made that choice right and I think some other moves that they make down the line as I said in yesterday’s program it’s like that should probably inform how we feel about them right if this was step one to be like “Hey we want to be competitive.” The other steps you make in that direction should be judged in that same manner bryant is probably like on nor on like normal good teams like you pick a you pick a rookie and they just like don’t play it’s like yeah fine it’s fine like like oh hey this this team’s trying to win rookies are typically bad it doesn’t matter and if the Blazers had not made that move for Holiday I’d say like I think they should try to find minutes for Carter Bryant and probably a good big old chunk of them if he’s on the team regardless right um if they really want to be good Bryant seems like he’s a ways away he has a pretty limited offensive skill set and he might never become enough of an individual offensive creator to be like a really high upside high level wing he might just be a guy who can defend multiple positions is a is a darn good defender and has some shooting chops that’s role play if you if at 11 you find a rotation piece a dude who plays in the league for eight or 10 seasons you nailed it i think the upside you’re hoping for is like positive starter but I think a a a realistic positive outcome is like natural rotation player for an extended period of time someone who signs a second contract on your team because they’re part of the like they’re part of their regular part of the rotation even if they’re like a bench guy um and Brian might profile as like if it he he would need to check a a significant number of boxes to like to go beyond like his sort of role player profile but the physical attributes you know 67 7 foot wingspan really good athlete strong was productive um in his minutes uh even even if they were limited at Arizona um the statistical prof uh uh profile from as Kevin Pelton of ESPN wrote like he this dude looks like he he has the signs of a of a productive NBA player um it’s just like can he put together enough individual sort of offensive stuff can he get can his handle get there can his shot creation get there can the passing get there that he’s like a versatile type of wing or is he a relatively like I defend i I shoot I make shots um and kind of have a narrower role narrower ask even i think that’s the question and if the Blazers were a team that was kind of still a big like young lump of clay like they were before obviously like they won 36 games they’re competitive the second half of the season i recognize all that their defense is really good second half of the season i I recognize all that but it’s like if if they hadn’t sort of made this commitment trade to with Holiday um then I would be all in on Carter yeah young player let him find a minutes he’s going to need you know he’s going to he might take a little while to be like a positive impact but he’s got a lot of tools and like a toolsy wing who needs some skill development is exactly who the Blazers have targeted several times he makes sense he fits the he fits the mold he’s like the kind of player they’ve enjoyed um but what if they like what if what if this opportunity what if this situation and the decisions that they’ve made inform their future decisions and they say “Eh we don’t need a rookie we don’t want a 19-year-old who has who’s going to take a little seasoning we want to be a little bit better.” Well there’s some there are some teams out there that reportedly are maybe interested in doing business to uh that could help the Blazers uh maybe achieve some of those goals let’s talk about that and let’s talk about the sort of consensus at the top of the draft plus little Matis Lel in the second segment join me there first though let’s talk open phone uh if you run a small business you know that every mis call is money left on the customers all right so there is some reporting that there’s some going to be some movement and look we’ve already seen some movement like the the the CJ McCollum got traded to the Wizards today for Jordan Pool in just like a a trade that made me laugh uh Chris Borzingis got traded to uh got traded to the Atlanta Hawks as the as the Boston Celtics Celtics continue to cut cost i don’t think any of these trades are official but agreed Tuesday because the action is coming uh and there could be some more action there likely will be a ton of action i mean there’s going to be 30 picks tomorrow night or or tonight i’m recording this on Tuesday you’re listening to the June 25th show uh Wednesday’s program we made it to draft night like there’s going to be action regardless because like um there’s going to be 30 draft picks but but it seems to be the trade market is already heating up and it’s and here we go um there’s some reporting that Philly while VJ Edge might be seems to be the sort of consensus pick for them they might be interested in trading down they might be interested in in in trading out and making moves to to to not uh you know leverage the third pick to get uh players that are closer to winning right away to help you know to help their injured elder players uh chase that coveted spot in the Eastern Conference Finals um Charlotte uh they’re at four is reportedly interested in maybe trading down but those teams don’t really help the Blazers trading down isn’t what the Blazers might want to do now that they’re like more in a go for it mode they’re in a like they’re what what I’m sort of thinking from the Blazers is obviously they could they could uh they could just make the pick right they could make the pick they could pick a youngster youngsters help having players on rookie scale deals is is valuable like the way you um sort of win in the league is you get a rookie that way overperforms their rookie deal right you they’re they’re good before they’re paid to be good and you leverage a cheap player that is overachieving for a couple seasons to to sort of like um be awesome uh that that’s like that’s where you get real value particularly if you’re sort of on the margins and trying to be a competitive team is like you pick someone 13th they’re an NBA starter by year two they’re an excellent player in years three and years four before they are earn that that big old contract you got to give them and you have you know a two and a half threeyear window where you’re pretty darn good with them so like yeah there’s value in rookies but if but most for the most part rookies are bad and if the Blazers are trying to accelerate the program and get good are the teams that might want to trade yeah Philly and Charlotte want to trade back but I’m talking about teams that want to trade trade up well according to to the Stein line uh the Kings have been pretty actively trying to trade up in the draft um and they are they are interested in acquiring a first round pick um but according to Steinline that pick is probably more likely going to be in the 20s not uh in the Blazers range at 11 but there are some teams that might move up to 11 um according to uh according to ESPN San Antonio is interest is potentially interested in moving up from their spot at 14 to get another another crack in the lottery of course they’ve got two uh and are are widely projected to take Dylan Harper but they might be interested in moving up if the Spurs want to jump up to say 11 and get someone would they be willing to part with the sort of Devin Vels or uh you know Kell Johnson’s of the world to make that happen would they be willing to like I don’t know what Harrison Barnes does exactly for the Blazers except be a Tarheel but like would they be willing to give up some of their sort of young but well compensated uh youngsters young veterans uh in order to in order to get another another sort of rookie wild card um OKC according to ESPN armed with 15 24 and 44 in the draft they don’t have a need for three rookies but they would be willing to package those together to move up in the draft would um you know would a couple would a multi-team trade in which the Blazers move you know get send 11 to OKC and and reroute 15 and for and 24 somewhere else in order to get like Isaiah Joe and another veteran would that help would that sort of address some of the Blazers needs i I I think there’s a world in which the Blazers say at 11 we could get a young player and could help but our goals have changed and I think there’s some teams that could be uh could be kind of in that in in the range to to to to help them do that and I think San Antonio OKC um are are certainly teams teams to watch out for in that manner um speaking of the draft seems like we got a pretty consensus top six or seven espn’s top top seven cooper flag Dylan Harper pretty much everybody has them vj Edgecom at three Coniple four Jeremiah Fears five Ace Bailey six falling to Washington and Trey Johnson at seven sam Vini over at the Athletic Flag Harper Edge Canipple Fears Bailey Johnson that’s the exact same top seven ricky O’Donnell over at SP Nation flag Harper Edgeum Canipple Bailey Johnson fears that’s the exact same top seven except Bailey at five uh and and Fears dropping to seven with um w with Johnson jumping to six but it’s the same it’s the same seven names just Ace Bailey as a as a jazz man and not and not a magician i guess a wizard we have magicians there in Orlando um you’re a wizard Harry you’re a wizard Ace uh in any case like that seems to be generally the consensus top six or seven names uh there could be obviously a surprise but I think we have a we have a we have a pretty clear vision of what most folks think will be the top six or seven picks the questions kind of start there at um you know at eight it’s like what what is what is Brooklyn going to do um like Vini has them taking uh Kaspariaonis uh ESPN has them taking Common Mawatch big man from Duke uh like and then you kind of get into this range where who’s going to still be there if we know the first seven picks then the big questions leading up to the Blazers at 11 are who’s going to go 8 910 um and one of the big changes is now Phoenix is at 10 and I think that’s one of one of the shakeups here does Phoenix like they need they need to get bigger right um ESPN reported ESPN has them mocked taking uh Colin Murray Boils but says that they are interested in Derek Queen uh from Maryland and Sanvicini has them taking Derek Queen uh Ricky O’Donnell has them taking pretty shockingly Jace Richardson which I would say is the funniest possible outcome uh for for the Suns but I think that’s that’s a wild card right is cuz all of a sudden now Phoenix is in the mix and and what are they trying to do uh real quick before we we shift and talk Drew Holiday to close the show cuz I do have some stray thoughts on him but like um it’s mostly it’s in some ways uh reiterating some thoughts that I and and and correcting some thoughts that I had uh in yesterday’s program but Matis Thyel picked up his player option shocker oh my goodness officially today was a deadline for Matise Thyel to pick up his player option it’s $1.55 million for this upcoming season and Matis Thyel who wasn’t going to find $11.5 million anywhere else in this market decided to go ahead and pick up that money congratulations Matise um Tiss is a fun like first of all he’s a fun dude right like he’s just easy easy guy to root for such a unique and weird player there’s pretty much nobody like him in the league um you know like I said I don’t think there’s a world in which there’s 11 million waiting for him in the free agent market he’s like it’s hard to see him being a guy who plays in big games because of his offensive limitations not a great shooter and doesn’t do much else on offense ball handling passing that that’s not quite there for him but he’s such a fun and and and disruptive defensive player and with with what the Blazers have in tow right now bring being able to bring Matis Thyel off the bench and add more defensive just um confusion mayhem chaos to the mix with another bench wing like he’s like shooting guard size but he’s a wing um that’s really fun for them i I I like that for him um I I like I like that sort of chaos he’s a guy who I said to a friend earlier today it’s like I have a hard time seeing Matis Lyel helping you win big games but I have easy time envisioning helping you win a bunch of small ones because he’s just so chaotic and so disruptive that in games where you aren’t like specifically keying in on guys weaknesses what you do in the playoffs you key in on guys weaknesses it’s a weak link it’s the weak link league um when you don’t you don’t really do that in the regular season the games come too quickly to be so game plan specific for any for any individual opponent that Thible can just be so disruptive when he’s on defensively um and and he’s had some moments and obviously he didn’t play very much last year he shot it really well but it’s he just didn’t play very many games um like yeah if the shooting ever sticks around for an entire season Thyel is awesome and if it doesn’t he’s still extremely fun and extremely fun at some point extremely fun is uh is something you that we should all be thankful to have around fun is often good enough um I have some more Drew Holiday thoughts he is not even a Blazer he’s not even a trailblazer yet um there’s a report that Drew Holiday doesn’t even want to be in Portland and let me say before we even get to the Drew Holiday portion of the program I’m not even going to talk about that stupid nonsense it’s obviously nonsense but I do have some other thoughts about Drew Holiday they’re like actually um real nuance takes about how basketball works join me in the third segment we will do we will do some we will think about how the sport works and how rosters work and and the fit of Drew Holiday with the Portland Trailblazers and some thoughts that u listener sent me to my uh to my email inbox join me in that third segment before we get there though let’s to Lockdown Blazers yesterday’s program was supposed to be about the NBA draft i had a lot of this stuff organized i was going to talk all about it uh plus some other things kind of uh it just slipped through the cracks uh then Drew Holidayiday got traded to the Portland Trailblazers and I had to react to that trade within about you know 40 minutes of hearing it i stepped in front of the microphone 40 minutes of singing reported I stepped in front of the microphone kind of got my thoughts organized and shared my thoughts i am this is not a place where I’m I am about to say like I was dead wrong but I do think I was maybe a little too strong in some of the opinions I held there and I heard from so many of you um locked [emailĀ protected] is the place to email me it’s the best place to get in touch with me period i don’t really use social media with any regularity such that that’s a good place to track me down and I find that people who take the time to write emails often are more thoughtful that’s the place to find me um and many of you did i don’t think I’ve ever had a single day with more emails than after this Drew Holiday trade that includes when Damen Lord got traded i think cuz that was sad not exciting duality is exciting duality is exciting um some people are are are more in my my ballpark and they’re like why did they do this but I think in general even if you’re if um you are confused by sort of the direction the decision-m of the of the local basketball team or just the basketball team that happens to be in Portland Oregon if you’re all over the world shout out to shout out to everybody listening um down under i I surprising number of listeners in Melbourne Australia um and apparently as I’ve learned in Germany as well all over the map um in in in any case uh wherever you’re wherever you are enjoying the Trailblazers from I think like even if you’re confused by it this is an this is a big kind of big namey splashy out of nowhere move um and I got a couple emails suggesting kind of pushing back on some of the some of the thoughts that I had and and I want and I want to um I want to unpack those a little bit one of them was that I was kind of I had said on the show that it felt like this trade left Scoot Henderson in a weird space and a couple listeners said like I actually think this trade helps Drew Henderson i think this trade is like um is even like intended for Drew Henderson uh Drew Henderson for Scoot Henderson like acquiring Drew Holidayiday with Scoot in mind i don’t think I can follow you all the way there dear listeners i’m not going to call you out by name if I’m disagree with on podcast i’ll just email you back um but I wouldn’t go I wouldn’t go there but I do think um a couple things one I I I said on yesterday’s show that if I had to sit here and guess um that I think Drew Holidayiday would start on opening night that’s a June guess and we are one day later about 24 hours later a little more than that because it’s pretty late at night uh but like uh I maintain that guess that would still be my guess because I don’t think in the way that like the Spurs kind of promised Chris Paul that he was gonna start and they just they just said like “Yeah hey you’re gonna be our guy.” Um and and they rolled with him like there is a respect given to quality veterans and the Blazers aren’t in a position where um Holiday would um where it would be like an easy sell to be like you are Scoot you hi welcome to Portland you are Scoot Henderson’s backup that said that’s still my guess in June i’m not backtracking on that that’s still my guess in June i bet Drew Holidayiday starts how long he starts maybe he’s open for like opening night first couple months of the season all season i bet he starts i’m not super worried about minutes though um I think uh there’s there’s guard minutes to be had there are 96 of them uh at the two guard spots you kind of got to figure out where the forwards fit with Jeremy Grant Tumani and Dennis and and that’s and the Blazers played three of them together fairly often you got to figure out how to get Matis Thyel in there um if you add any other players to the roster they might need to play at some of those two and three spots as well um yeah like I’m not super worried about like overall minutes i think there’s a world in which um Holiday plays about 30 and that leaves uh you know space for about 30 for Scoo Anderson and about 30 for um for Shane Sharp give or take but and I don’t think starting is everything but it’s not nothing and it’s not nothing for for you know 21 22 year olds who are entering crucial years of their careers it’s not nothing um that’s one of the reasons that I was in favor of you know you can trade Afrey Simons for vets but maybe someone who like makes more sense coming off the bench because in my mind I was like hey the Blazers should really commit to like giving Scoot the keys to the boat right like let him and if he crashes the boat so be it um and and like just like a ton of minutes of Scoot and Shade and Sharp together as many as you possibly can get to learn as much as you can because in my priority wasn’t necessarily like when I’m thinking about this team it’s like I don’t care like I don’t know they won 36 games last year if they went 32 this season I like that’s fine like f like the overall win loss thing cuz I I don’t see them as like a high level playoff team but when you trade for Drew Holiday they’re like they’re clearly chasing like playing and beyond is how they envision themselves right that’s a move you make to win so um I I I maintain that that’s my guess which some of you kind of um disagreed with and but but the the other thing I want to push back here is like this trade Drew Holiday fits better with the two youngsters Scoot and Shay than Afrey Simons does a lot better right because he can play off the ball more he doesn’t need to dribble as much he’s a much better defensive player in theory um he’s much better defensive probably period uh but like the you know he’s 35 there is a there is like a decline in talent thing drew Holidayiday is going to provide better basketball context on the court than Simons could and I think it’s a relatively safe bet that Afrey Simons will make about as much money on his next contract as as Drew Holidayiday is making over the next over his next couple maybe a little less like I would I would guess that Anfrey Simons makes starterish money at like $30 million a year which is crazy that that’s starter-ish money that would be my guess for an It wouldn’t shock me if he makes 22 um it would shock me if he makes 42 but um but like it wouldn’t shock me if he makes 22 wouldn’t shock me he makes 20ish right um but like yeah he’s going to get paid like um and he could get paid relatively handsomely depending on depending on the context um would you rather like assuming that their their contracts are relatively comparable would you rather have just like Drew Holiday for the money or Afrey Simons for the same money i think you could make an argument they’d rather have Drew and I think that’s a fine argument to make i think you could make the argument you’d much rather have Ant um but context like Ant in context I don’t know if you’d want that on this particular roster just because he’s not as complimentary with the other two guards as Drew’s theoretical skill set is perfectly complimentary drew Holidayiday of six years ago you know five years ago ideal to bear with these guys it’s just like you know father time mother nature your parents um will often win in in this game so all of that is to say there’s like a dozen other permutations that could have been more of a commitment to Scoot because they could have traded for someone who didn’t need to play 30 minutes like um just to like there’s not like a perfect like I’m I’m kind of like delving into the world of fake trades but it’s like you know the the one I proposed on locked on Blazers this is or on locked on uh the locked NBA mockd draft it’s like something where the Blazers acquired like Kand Davis Caldwell Pope he not he was not very good this year he’s he has a fairly ownorous contract as well right and he might also be getting beat up by uh Father Time and Mother Nature and he was never as good as Drew Holidayiday right he’s just like not as good but um you know a trade for that caliber of player who could like very comfortably come off the bench um like that is would to in my eyes would be like an actual commitment to Scoot drew Holly might help Scoot Henderson there’s a world in which he’s the perfect type of player that does what you need to do with Scoot right um because of his skill set and because he helps so much right but I I I I don’t like and I talked to someone with the Blazers uh yesterday evening who kind of shared the same thing it’s like this trade will help Scoot this could help Scoot um and what they pushed back against when I talked to this this person with the Trailblazers uh wi with the organiza a team source if you will but someone with the with the organization was like it’s just too early to know who to talk about who starts and who doesn’t start and we just like there’s so many more things to jump through and I think that’s the key thing to remember here with all of this like I’m going to react every day i’m going to talk i’m going to talk about stuff that’s like I’m going to I’m going to firm I’m going to share firm opinions about stuff that is like squishy soft and unknown right like stuff that is just like not firm right that is that is still malleable um so part of that is just the nature of this beast right i do it five days a week until forever so um I will say that I still would guess that Scoot that that Drew Holidayiday starts but I will also admit that um I was probably a little bit harsher on like the the oh my gosh he’s going to start type of take that’s not that big of a deal now that I zoom out um it’s it’s not nothing and it could end up being a big deal but it it’s not right now I don’t see it as like a terribly big deal because like I don’t know man he what if he uh I don’t think comparing minutes across teams it’s like Drew Holidayiday only play this many minutes for the Celtics well the Blazers don’t have the Celtics roster so then they don’t have they don’t have Derek White and and and Jaylen Brown and Payeyton Pritchard so that’s just a different that’s a different thing we’re talking about a different thing um but like you know there’s a world in which Holiday plays fewer minutes he plays he plays 28 29 and the Blazers can like find plenty minutes for Scoot Henderson but who finishes and who closes particularly for for high lottery picks you’ve like conceivably invested in matters if the Blazers are winning a bunch of games it won’t matter who plays uh but I would still guess that um while Drew Holidayiday could be helpful I still think he will probably start in front of Scoot Henderson or start in front of Shane Sharp going to start in front of one of them um and the that um that’s where I am at in June there is a million miles to go starting with tomorrow night’s NBA draft what are they gonna do we will talk all about it once it wraps up um so come back for tomorrow’s show uh I will be here right after the draft happens shortly after I don’t know right after shortly after the draft happens and I will have a show for you and we’ll react to all of the stuff that the Blazers did and other big moves across the league it’s a fun night i love the NBA draft a draft night is so fun i I think the NBA draft is better than all the other drafts um it is uh it’s it’s great it’s great uh I can’t wait come join me for tomorrow’s show that’s what we do five days a week wherever you get podcasts also on YouTube i appreciate you listening i’ll talk to you soon

Draft Day. We made it,. We’re talking final mock drafts, latest draft day trade rumors, Matisse Thybulle sticking around and Jrue Holiday’s fit with Portland’s young guards.

  1. Just FYI, ESPN had another mock last night in which Portland takes Kasparas at 11, likely because they have Bryant going to Phoenix

  2. We need to swing for highest upside even if it could be a miss all together. Without ā€œthe guyā€ we can’t build a contender

  3. Portland needs a point guard. Also Holiday is a very good clutch player. My first though was that they will trade him as part of another trade, a bit of a redux, but his playing here works. He's like Kevin Durant: always a good fit if you can afford it.

  4. No pick this year. #11 will be traded for win now player. Team for sale. Need more Ws to boost offer. Cronin trying to keep his job. Neither give a rip about the fans.

  5. The Jrue trade is an indictment on Scoot. No franchise is going to bring in a $130M veteran to play the same position as the #3 pick going into his 3rd year if they really believed in the young guy.

  6. ESPN already updated today again and chose Jaku. They have no clue who we are picking this year.

  7. We are taking Coward. He is the best player available and the most ready right now anyways.

  8. I'd be happy with Carter Bryant, Cedric Coward, or Rasheer Fleming. I think those are the only pieces in our current draft range that can immediately provide things that we need to get better immediately within our depth chart. Cedric Brown's solid defense, 3pt shooting & consistency (reliable backup 2-3). Carter Bryant's defensive intensity & effort, high-motor, versatility, and 3pt shooting (high energy/high effort off the bench at 2-4). Rasheer Fleming's defensive versatility, 7'5" wingspan length, stretch 4 capability (defensive minded 4-5, but quick enough to apply some pressure on perimeter players unlike most bigs, which could be very useful next to Clingan who's a bit slower but typically keeps good positioning. Also, can be the 5 if big enough, quick enough, and good enough of a defender to be a 5 anchor in a smallball lineup. If we decide to play that way for a stretch) Carter Bryant might be able to play smallball 5 also due to his tremendous defensive effort level. All 3 are solid picks for the Blazers specifically, and if all 3 were available, i'd go Carter Bryant (because you just can't teach that level of effort and he has the highest ceiling) > Rasheer Fleming (because he fits exactly with what the Blazers need now at the backup 4-5 position) > Cedric Coward (probably most NBA ready right now and best shooter of these 3 guys, but between Sharpe, Toumani, & Scoot I want them to get as many minutes and experience as they can). If we could somehow pull off Carter Bryant and Rasheer Fleming while trading Jermi Grant, that is literally a dream scenario will give the Blazers the "core/foundation" of everything we truly need to move forward. From there, it will be easy to re-tool our roster to exactly what's needed. And I'll will no longer have to feel like something huge immediately has to be done.

  9. My initial preferences are Rasheed , Newell , and maybe Essengue , but …… if those guys are pick before the 11th , and maybe if not , Wolf is a very interesting kid , maybe needs to improve his defense , but man ….. the things that kid is capable to do with the ball being a 7.0 ……. those things can't be teached , or you have it or not , very very interesting kid

  10. On Blazers Uprise last night Eric(biggest simons homer since marang) blew up on on Tory because he said Scoot coming off the bench behind Jrue "wasnt as bad" as him coming behind simons. And he was %100 correct….and Eric was livid and wouldnt listen to reason. Goes to show how much homerism colored glasses are not good for you. Vet savviness, mentorship, cache, leading by example (defense), oh and 2 championships to boot. Ther's your reason. It is clear the keys are handed to Scoot while Jrue is there to help along the way regardless of starts. While with simons it was constant double standards game, Scoot outplaing simons in a game while only getting sub 20 minutes. Chauncey preaching about earning a role yet playing favoritism all season. This move should have been done 2 seasons ago when you drafted #3, tad late but better than nothing. Someone give Eric some tissues since Im banned over there. Also, there is something to be said about vets bench buddy thing. Much easier to find a chair when you have 2+ 30yo+ chatting it up from the sidelines. Meaning they can be like "I know we better than these kids but we gotta let em cook ya know" sort of a thing. Jrue and Grant are coming off the bench, book it.

  11. Fleming is the guy who will adjust to any team and be useful. He is the guy Portland needs. Don't care if its planned plays or a broken play, he will make good things happen for whoever gets him. Totally built for todays nba game. Don't let him get away. We start below 500 after 30 games Chauncey is gone. Jrue won't ever wear a Blazer uniform and will be traded before you know it. We got him because he is more valuable to a contender trying to get to the next level than Simons would have been to anyone and someone will want him soon.

  12. Latest espn mock draft as of yesterday has Phoenix taking Carter Bryant, and us KJ. Don’t know how this lineup would work tho

  13. Thank you Mike for coming back with your comments today regarding Holiday's role.

I love the versatility that Holiday offers the Blazer's lineup changes and rotations. Holiday can guard up to 4 positions and he shot the same percentage from the 3-point line as Simons did last season, just on smaller volume. Holiday has also played most of his minutes off the ball during his time with the Celtics as Tatum and Brown were the primary playmakers and even with the Bucks as Giannis was the primary creator.

In terms of Scoot's development, it does appear the Blazer's are not necessarily sold on him as the franchise point guard, and with ESPN's latest mock now having Jakucionis, it could be a situation where the Blazer's are not making a commitment to Scoot.

I'm of the opinion that the only way Scoot starts is by way of it becoming glaringly apparent he is a better performer than someone in front of him.

Personally, I believe this if a far better developmental process than throwing a young player out and seeing what he can do approach, and, with Chauncey's background as a player, it points towards a situation in which Scoot must show the Blazer's the growth and consistency before he's handed over the responsibility as the primary manager of the Blazer's offense.

Today's draft will be a big determination on how the Blazer's view Scoot. If they draft Jakucionis, it's a pretty clear indicator that they aren't comfortable with Scoot as the future point guard.

I understand that if Scoot ultimately falls into a role player NBA player it's extremely frustrating since he was the #3 pick, but, it's how the NBA draft goes. Zero guarantees as evidenced by so many "sure fire" guys, aka Ben Simons, Zion, etc. Heck, even the vaunted Warriors wiffed hard on Wiseman at #2 and OKC missed badly
