Texas State is Pac-12 bound + Tyler King on Nique Clifford’s fit with the Kings
[Music] [Applause] [Music] hey [Music] hey hey [Music] what’s up y’all welcome into another edition of DNVR Rams Live presented by our friends at Branded Bills head to brandedbills.com use that code BBDNVR for 15% off your first order we’ve got a loaded Friday morning show for you a lot to dive into as we head into the weekend here i’ve got the the holiday schedule coming up so unsurprisingly little bit of chaos before you know we get to the 4th of July and and all that kind of stuff um we’re we’re going to be talking Texas State and their seemingly uh inevitable addition to the Pack 12 based on all the national reports and invite will be formally expected like today uh Texas State will be calling a meeting on Monday to have the border regions vote on it obviously that Tuesday deadline of July 1 is is significant as their buyout will jump from five to10 million dollars to leave the Sunb Belt uh but all all signs seem to be pointing to Texas State being the eighth football member so we’re going to start by talking about that in the second half of the show I’m going to be giving a couple of thoughts on Neat Clifford landing with the Kings i’m going to be joined by my good friend Tyler King of the Denver Gazette i’m going to pick his brain on that we’ll talk landing with the Jazz uh player development which has been great at CSU a really nice track record these last couple of years which you love to see um but yeah a lot to get into today sorry I was pulling up the the notes here my screen got frozen but let’s talk Texas State in the Pack 12 before we talk about Nick landing with the Kings his fit in Sacramento all of that uh I’m going to try and just give the pros and the cons i’ll wrap it up at the end i I’ll try and be as fair as possible here because I think there’s going to be a lot of really bad takes that come out of this i think you’re going to see a lot of disingenuous commentary i think you’ll see people that throw a fit about it i I will admit that it’s not a move that has me jumping with joy or anything like that uh there are a couple options that I would have preferred if they could have made it happen uh but there’s a lot of factors that that come into play here the buyout’s a big factor um honestly a willingness to be bold and you know bet on yourself like that’s a part of this as well you know the Pack 12 went after UNLV they weren’t willing to be bold they went after Memphis they weren’t necessarily willing to you know put up the money uh Texas State is a growing school it’s obviously in the heart of the the football capital of the world in Texas there’s a reason that all of these leagues including the SEC have made an effort to get into Texas from a recruiting standpoint from a visitility standpoint there are a lot of pros to that the OG Pack 12 back in the day tried really hard to get into Texas they went after Texas Tech a couple of times &m you know before they went to the SEC i think at one point Texas was close to going to the Pack 12 so I mean it it’s been something that all the leagues have had an interest in for years the Mountain West obviously expanded added TCU back in the day uh they’ve taken a hard look at other Texas schools over the years for you know various reasons it hadn’t really worked out and some of that has to do with the fact that the premier Texas brands are already accounted for i mean I think that’s fair to say i think even Texas State fans would recognize that it’s not the University of Texas it’s not&M you know it’s it’s not even Tech or some of those other big brands at TCU at this point uh but it is a a school that’s growing it’s got an enrollment of roughly 40,000 i think the spring numbers were like 37,567 based on some some facts I found from their website it’s a 6% increase from 2024 and that keeps up with the growing trend this is a school that’s growing uh pretty rapidly by the year it’s about 40 minutes from Austin so it’s you know a place that is growing as well uh it’s an athletic department that is committed to growing we’ll say that that’s that’s definitely part of this equation and part of their appeal um their athletic budget is roughly between 35 and $40 million the last official numbers I could find from 2022 were like around 37 million based on all the reporting I’ve seen it’s around 40 million which is an area that they’re going to need to substantially improve over the years i mean even Nevada I think is like 54 million csu is closer to like 75 uh so they’re they’re going to have to make a major investment into athletics i’m sure that was a part of the negotiation process um and obviously you know getting a bigger media rights deal whether they’re a full share member which would be less appealing to me uh if they’re able to come in at a reduced share which is what John Kzano is reporting that it won’t be a quote full bowl of soup that makes it an even more sensible play just when you look at the options currently on the table for the the Pack 12 ultimately you get another football member you had to get to eight before 2026 or this whole thing falls apart you know you took a run at UNLV they get the sweetheart deal uh from the Mountain West i still would argue that I’m not sure that payday they were promised is going to really come to fruition i guess we’ll see based on how this whole mediation process and the poaching penalties and and how that all plays out i’m sure they’ll get something i just don’t think it’s going to be the the massive number that they were promised and then you look up long term you know really what is the future for the Mountain West without Boise State without San Diego State without the premier brands i’d make the same argument about the American and Memphis i I do think there’s some validity to a a school like Memphis not wanting to significantly increase its travel budget for all sports for a payday that maybe isn’t going to be a significant jump from the AAC i do think the Pack 12 will get more than than what the AAC currently has but the the question obviously is is it enough to justify a major increase in travel funds uh on top of that you know you’ve got the exit fees and everything that go along with it so it’s it’s a lot to put down upfront for a move that is a gamble objectively like there’s no guarantee that this is all going to to pay off or anything like that but I I I just get tired of a lot of the commentary for one thing it’s not a one-year play the Pack 12 in 2026 is not necessarily the Pack 12 in 2030 you add Texas State now at the very minimum you you assure that you can maintain your FBS status as a conference it it especially if you’re able to get them in at a reduced share let’s say you got them in at a 50% share or even a 60% share you know are are you then able to take the other 40% and go get somebody like St mary’s and really lean into you know basketball i I do think there are some potential creative options that the Pack 12 still has here that can maybe uh increase the the general interest in them you know if you go and and you add St mary’s from a basketball perspective that league’s really really exciting now you know maybe you open up the possibility of a football only membership uh with Memphis that also has some type of non-conference basketball agreement scheduled uh into it memphis could move the rest of their sports to the Big East you could do the same thing with Yukon who’s you know really been looking for a home for their football program obviously that would be quite a bit of a haul the optics of a you know a team like Connecticut being in the Pack 12 it feels a little bit silly admittedly uh but that is where we’re at with the current landscape of college athletics and I see all these people with their disingenuous you know snarky takes oh it’s it’s just the same Mountain West or this was a completely pointless move well if you double your media rights deal was it pointless if you go from being associated with Nevada and San Jose State to Washington State and Oregon State is that not really a lateral move i I would argue not even close when you look at the metrics when you look at the success from a football and basketball standpoint the schools that are going to be on the Pack 12 side versus the Mountain West side it’s not even close and the other thing that just really annoys me about all this is you see the comments oh you know they’re calling themselves the Pack 12 it’s it’s nothing like the old Pack 12 it’s not we never claimed it was going to be what these schools are trying to do is make the best of a bad situation you know they’re trying to react to something that’s been forced upon them thanks to schools like Texas and Oklahoma making the jump to the SEC and everything that’s you know transpired since then oregon and USC and UCLA and Washington all going to the the Big 10 and then ultimately the Pack 12 imploding with the remainder of the schools ending up in the Big 12 and a couple of teams in the ACC when I see the snarky ridicule from some of these people especially the ones associated with schools like Texas and Oregon who are a big part of why we’re all in this we’re all in this weird situation in the first place like we were all on a sinking ship texas and the Big 10 they took the big life rafts the comfy ones they they floated off to an island while the rest of us were still stuck on that ship basically the the Big 12 in the ACC they were able to grab like the the next remaining rafts and everybody else we were stuck on this sinking ship and we’ve tried to patch together a life raft to be able to make it out of this mess and I guess I would point out to anybody that’s you know being a snarky [ __ ] about this like what are these schools supposed to do are they supposed to just sit idle and and not do anything and just fall into irrelevancy and and basically have spent all this money you know schools like San Diego State CSU Boise State they’ve made a major investment into athletics over the last 10 15 years they’re supposed to just do nothing and go down with it i I just don’t really understand the logic behind all of that and you know sure there there are schools that I think would have been bigger PR wins than Texas State i think that’s certainly fair to point out i do think you would take UNLV over them maybe I’m biased as a Mountain West guy but we’ve got some people in the the Toyota chat saying would rather give that 40% to oh to New Mexico rather than St mary’s who I threw out earlier i’d be open to something like that too i I don’t think New Mexico would do that i don’t think they’re going to drop football or anything like that they can’t afford likely to to take a 40% share uh there’s there’s some factors that hurt schools in all of this that weren’t really their fault you know they they just didn’t have the resources you know a school like New Mexico with how committed they are to basketball i do think if they had the funds to make it work like Utah State was willing to be bold after you know getting the secondary invite you know I think a school like New Mexico would do it they just can’t they don’t have the money you could say the same thing probably about like Wyoming although I don’t know how appealing Wyoming would have been to the Pack 12 in the first place um but you’re you’re making the the best of a bad spot man you need that eighth football member and it really comes down to logistics at the end of the day like if you can get Texas State for $5 million at a reduced share versus spending close to 30 million to go get Memphis uh who isn’t necessarily stoked about being involved with you at at the moment anyways that kind of seems like a no-brainer to me like yes there is some risk here i think it’s fair to point out that you know outside of the last couple of years Texas State doesn’t really have a proven track record of success they’re they’re coming off of back-to-back eight and five seasons they’ve won a couple of bowl games attendance is on the rise all of that but they’ve got a really good coach right now on football so what happens when he inevitably gets poached by a bigger school are you able to maintain this upward trajectory that you’ve been on with football the last couple of years or is this more of an outlier and and you fall back you know more to the mean which is which is certainly possible uh it this move doesn’t do a ton for you from a PR standpoint again it’s going to probably result in more snarky commentary albeit disingenuous and and lacking important context than you know had they gotten Memphis or something like that i think it would have felt like more of a a win publicly it doesn’t do much for you outside of filling the football league you know basketball they were 198 in net last year basically a 500 program at best most years although like Kevin Lidle pointed out a week or two ago they did have kind of a nice stretch from 2018 through 2021 uh you’re you’re adding a school that has very little track record but and a major hill to climb you know we pointed out again like they’re going to have the the lowest athletic budget in the league by by far but the the location is a plus and and that’s where a school like Texas State makes a lot more sense uh than a team like New Mexico when you factor in the buyouts when you factor in the geography of it all when you factor in the the potential of them coming in at a you know reduced share versus a full share like there’s a lot of reasons why this decision makes sense for the Pack 12 now admittedly like you want to see the league build off of this you know I’ve said that quite a few times now the Pack 12 of 2026 isn’t necessarily the the Pack 12 of 2030 and you kind of hope that’s not the case right like you hope this is a league that generates some traction both with football and basketball and I do think there’s some unique options on the basketball side that the Pack 12 will lean into they’ve already proven that by adding Gonzaga as a full member they are going to value basketball because basketball is a value element of what the Pack 12 has to offer yeah we could do a a you know double header with the Big East on TNT who’s going to have money to spend and content to fill after losing in the NBA i I I just think that this gives you options down the line it’s a sensible move it’s not necessarily a home run it’s not one that I think gets anybody jazzed myself included but I think there’s potential here with what they can be and I think having access to a market 40 miles outside of Austin a school with 40,000 alumni plus you know CSU’s got a lot of alumni in Texas which that’s always nice giving you an opportunity to sell tickets and and stuff there’s there’s room to grow uh there’s a lot to work with here and I I just think that the people that are being snarky and saying it’s the same Mountain West well no it’s it’s not even close i I’ve had some people even people I respect who are probably listening to this podcast down the line who have made comments like “Oh I think UNLV and Memphis are going to get the last laugh in the end because they’re going to you know have sweetheart deals and get to beat up on easier conferences.” I guess maybe i’ve already pointed out that I’m not sure where the Mountain West goes from here for a broadcasting standpoint how are you going to get the same money when you just lost all your flagship brands now you lost CBS who had been your main institutional partner for you know 15 plus years where are their games going to be shown somebody beats up on the MAC every year as well but it doesn’t necessarily mean that anybody gives a crap i I I would say if you’re Memphis yeah you’re going to dominate basketball and football in the American but you’re sitting there when all of your peers have already left and I don’t know at least you’re trying that’s to me it may not be the full home run in the end that we hoped it would be and I certainly still think that it could be uh but I would sure as hell rather go down swinging than be content being associated with a couple of athletic programs that just didn’t have any real chance of remaining relevant in in the modern landscape and it it does suck that all of this has happened i’m not trying to come on here and sound like some pretentious prick it’s not that I’m like rooting for the demise of some of these other schools i’ve said that a lot of times i’m not anti-DM West at all i’ve been a Mountain West guy my entire life uh the game has changed significantly in the last five years and you have to do something or you’re going to get left behind because you basically already have right the the bigger leagues have made it clear where these other schools including Boise including CSU where they currently stand in the grand scheme of things you know they’ve had multiple opportunities to add you know some of these Mountain West teams and they didn’t so the Mountain West teams had to take matter into their own hands and uh I’m excited about what the possibility can be we’re going to move on here we’re going to talk Nate Clifford and his fit with the Kings um if you got any questions throw them in the Toyota chat we can come back full circle at the end shout out to everybody rocking with us by the way if you wouldn’t mind giving us a thumbs up on YouTube I’d appreciate it uh but we do need to take a quick break here and pay the bills i want to talk to you guys about Cake Mortgage cake is the business owner’s home mortgage partner they specialize in nonQM loans uh if you’re a a business owner if you’re a regular employee of a company details uh we’ll be talking plenty about the Pack 12 you know next week as it all becomes official and whatnot uh but that’s my instant reaction to all this i understand some of the skepticism regarding Texas State and I think some of it is fair i think a lot of the commentary lacks context and logic and I think there’s a lot of people with axes to grind but you know it is what it is i’m looking forward to keeping this all rolling here taylor says “Can you touch on the Direct TV CBS deal?” Uh basically it just means it’ll be available through DirecTV which was not the case um with the Pack 12 network that was part of the the issue was their lack of visibility they couldn’t ever get a deal done with Direct TV you had to have Comcast and the whole sports rights process has become such a nightmare as a fan to be honest like you look at the altitude stuff you look at all this and then the impact it was a factor with The Mountain way back in the day too people forget that the Mountain West actually had their first had a TV network before all the other big leagues they were they were ahead of their time uh but media rights have been wonky you want to be available on every main distributor is the simplest way to put it the Pac 12 network was not uh as of right now and these things are are always fluid the Pack 12 the future Pack 12 will be available through you know Comcast Direct TV all the all the major cable providers which is where you want to be all right we’re going to be joined by Tyler King here in about 10 minutes my good friend does an awesome job covering CSU and and really all things Colorado sports he’s got a great basketball podcast as well uh subscribe to him follow him on Twitter all of that before he comes on uh obviously the other night meet Clifford goes 24th overall in the NBA draft lands in Sacramento via a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder not my favorite landing spot if I had to pick you know like my top five places I was rooting for him mostly just because I’m a Nuggets fan and I wanted him to land in the East so I don’t have to you know root against him and in games where they’re playing each other i’m always going to be rooting for Neek’s success but I don’t think it’s a dumpster fire situation or anything like that you know the other day we were talking about how the dysfunction in Memphis you know made me weary they do have a pretty good track record in terms of hitting on their draft picks but just it’s it’s been a dysfunctional team with a lot of outside noise a lack of leadership i think part of that has to do with who they’ve invested in as their franchise player but that’s you know a whole separate rant but like Atlanta was another one that I wasn’t stoked on new Orleans I I think is a disastrous situation right now i really didn’t want him to land in any of those places sacramento you know they’ve they’ve messed a few things up with a couple of guys in the past but it’s a place you can be competitive and as we have a Kings fan in the Toyota chat here which I love to see you know he he says he loves the pick it’s exactly what the Kings lacked and needed i do think there’s a path to playing time in Sacramento particularly with what Nick is going to bring to the table defensively i think they can use some of that his length his versatility his his ability to guard you know switch one through four even you know one through five depending on who he’s going up against if it was like a Draymond Green type you know a smaller five I I think Nate could handle himself now you know you’re not probably going to put him on a true sevenfooter or anything like that for extended series um but that that defensive versatility makes him such a strong selling point to any of these NBA teams obviously he’s really grown in the last couple years as a scorer and a playmaker the ability to to get to his spots the ability to create quality looks and and hit them from all areas of the floor you know he went from a guy who was very inconsistent at CU to one of the more lethal and and clutch players that I got to cover at CSU i mean you look at the shot making in some of those games down the stretch this past spring i mean that was not normal especially for this league like you’re not even seeing that pretty consistently in like the Big 12 in the ACC he was making NBA baskets he’s always been an NBA caliber athlete it was just that refinement and obviously the growth that he’s shown his confidence in himself all of that there were still moments you know when the old Nick would come out you know like he wanted just wanted it too much against CU and Boulder you could tell tried to do way too much right off the bat do you think he got in his head in that one uh but he he responded every single time and I just I talked about this with Steve Ivy the other night on his post draft or on his uh his draft live stream was I really feel like there’s a chance here that Nick’s ascension has really only just begun and I understand that he’s a 23 year old player and that’s why he didn’t go in the lottery when I think he would have had a chance at least to go in the teens i I think he’s one of the most NBA ready guys coming out now i think he’s one of the most versatile players in this class and you see a lot of the people nationally saying this type of commentary too it’s not like just me as a CSU guy you know sitting here trying to prop up my guy obviously I’m always going to be rooting for for Nick uh but I I just think that he’s a guy that can impact winning right now for you and I think that a lot of these teams tend to go after the same type of project picks year after year some of these 18 19 year olds who have you know freaky athletic qualities no doubt but are just so far from being ready to be impactful you know winning players in an NBA rotation and Anique is just the opposite of that and what’s cool is I I again I don’t think that he’s necessarily a finished product i think his growth offensively I mean if he continues to to shoot at a high clip from outside the the possibilities are pretty endless for him and I really do feel like the the sky is the limit for a guy like him and it would not surprise me at all if five years from now we look and not only is Nick you know well on his way to being you know the most established you know NBA Ram you know there’ve been a few but I I think Nick has an opportunity for some longevity here and I think when it’s all said and done when you look back like four or five years from now people are going to be thinking how the hell did this guy fall out of the top 15 how did he go to 24 you know I I I mentioned it even on Wednesday morning that the pre-draft uh projections had trended a little bit more with him in the the 20 to 25 range than the 15 to 20 range where he was pretty consistently a couple months or over the last couple months i think that has to do with uh some of the teams that made trades you know Orlando Indiana Atlanta some of those teams that were you know kind of widely forecasted to be in the mix for him uh but I I’m I’m really excited about what Nick can be i’m excited to get Tyler’s perspective on all of it we’re going to have him on here in just a second so we’re going to talk more Nick i did just briefly before we brought him on want to shout out John Tan as well who went 53rd overall to the Utah Jazz obviously an all-American at Wisconsin this past season but he’s a Ram through and through i mean he played four years at CSU he graduated from CSU had a ton of great moments was a part of you know NCA tournament part of the ascension of the program all of that fun stuff because of the wonky co stuff he had another year and used it to his advantage got a nice little payday uh via the portal which he wouldn’t have gotten elsewhere or he probably wouldn’t have gotten in Fort Collins at the time either so I I’m just happy for him that it’s worked out and it’s a pretty cool story like we’ve talked a lot about Ne’s rise over the years and and you know going from a guy who was being recruited over in Boulder and then kind of an afterthought at at CU to the star he became at CSU but I mean John Tan had one other offer in high school other than CSU was Nebraska Omaha he committed to CSU on the spot i think he was surprised he even got recruited by a program like CSU and from where he was at when he came into the program to where he’s at today I think you could make an argument his growth as a player has been even more uh significant than Nicks has been and I I think there’s a chance for him to be a rotational NBA player especially if he can shoot the three ball at a high clip uh continue to grow as a defender you know he’s got a nice frame he offers some length not quite as versatile as Nick handle’s not quite as strong either and he’s definitely not going to be the ball dominant player uh in the league that he was at Wisconsin this past year but man when you look at CSU’s record of track or their their record of player development here the track record that they’ve been able to establish it’s really impressive and and what we have seen over the last five years is is not normal again you know sending four guys to the NBA in you know a four-year span that’s really really impressive and I just hope people are able to appreciate that i I do think this is a really key stretch here like we don’t want to just get content and act like we’ve arrived we’ve made it i think continuing this ascension as a program is going to be paramount you’re at such a key moment right here and again like with what the Pack 12 can be from a basketball league I think now is the time like now is the time to strike continue going to the tournament you know continue sending guys to the league and you know who knows you know if we look up 10 years from now I I don’t think it’s unrealistic for CSU to be viewed as a San Diego State you know basketball program where it’s like maybe you’re not a national championship contender most years but you’ve got a good chance to make the second weekend of the tournament any given year and from where this program was at you know post you Stacy to now Nigon tweeted it and I I got to agree with him the as much heat as Joe Parker gets and rightfully so with a lot of it the ability to steal Nico Medved from Drake after he had already committed to Drake and that was a really tough thing for Nico because he’s he’s not that kind of guy to go back on his word like that to be able to pull him and save the program like that was one of the more significant um one of the more significant moments in in school history mahai Minute says “Notice CSU gave a shout out for John cu didn’t shout out Nick i’m not surprised just given that he transferred to an in-state rival it probably would have gotten trolled by Buffs fans and CSU fans to be fair uh had he had they done that also you know John graduated from CSU versus you know Nick didn’t he graduated from CSU but it is interesting right how how that has all played out and it’s I don’t blame people that don’t necessarily view Portal players as like their guys anymore i think every situation’s a little bit different i think when somebody played four years they graduated they’re undoubtedly you know a Ram for life uh but I’ll always be rooting for John because he was a really good kid and I got to witness his growth over the years which was a really cool story we’re going to get Tyler King on the show here i do got to i wasn’t surprised he fell to 24 i mean everyone knows that listens to my podcast knows how high I was on him i had him at number 10 on my big board um that I finalized kind of the morning of the draft i was kind of trying to cram as much tape in and watch some of the foreign guys i I didn’t really get a chance to watch watch a ton of um because I want to be fair to those guys too and I’m just a hoop sicko um but I kind of felt in Eek’s range started at like pick 13 maybe 14 with San Antonio and then went down to like 25 so I kind of felt like that end of the lottery to pick 25 is where I expected him to go anywhere in there um and drafts can always be weird on draft night you had the the Chinese Jokic as they call him young Hansen went all the way he was like a second round pick two weeks ago and now he goes to 16 to Portland um so I wasn’t surprised Nick F 24 i was surprised the team that traded into the into the first round and got him because they obviously didn’t have a a first round pick in this year’s draft Sacramento and they gave up a top 16 protected pick in two or in two years in 2027 so it’s not nothing um to go up and get Nick at number 24 so um it definitely says a lot of what they think about him and I and I think it’s an interesting fit for him as well we’ll see what their roster looks like at the end of the summer and going into the season but um I definitely think he’s going to have plenty of runway with that roster even if they’re not a playoff contender next year which I’m not sure if they will be um especially if they make a couple moves but um it’s Nick’s gonna have some runway to to grow right away as a rookie and and really see how he kind of he’s kind of be given a crash course test on how on how to be an NBA player because I think everyone is super high on him and and excited about his about everything he’s worked on over the last couple years and all that translating um now we’ll get a chance to see it you know first and first and foremost in Sacramento and that’ll be that’ll be fun because he’ll likely get to come to Denver twice during the season um but yeah it it’ll be it’s an interesting fit because it’s not one I I really pictured i thought OKC you know Portland uh Atlanta Minnesota trying to think about all these teams um Sacramento just wasn’t one but I think they obviously like them a lot you said a couple of things that I want to hit on there and starting with it did make me laugh a little bit i probably read 200 mocks in the month leading up to the draft not one of them that’s and they didn’t have a first round pick so it makes sense but not one of them had him landing with Sacramento um I do think there is an path to playing time which is exciting and and as you mentioned you know as a Nuggets fan not my favorite potential outcome not my least favorite potential outcome either you know had he been an OKC from a Nuggets perspective that would have sucked from a ne perspective that you know I mean obviously they’ve got the chance to be you know contenders moving forward here uh but do you have any fears about Sacramento as an organization like you know one of the things that I do think hurt Rody early on in his career was just the dumpster fire that was the Memphis locker room it wasn’t his fault but there was just so much going on they had no leadership i don’t think Sacramento’s in that same boat necessarily but their track record isn’t phenomenal either
yeah I think we got to give this new front office a chance at least scott Perry took over as the GM at the end of this past season um Doug Christie was the interim coach after they pretty stunningly I thought fired Mike Brown mid-season um a guy who was well thought of throughout the league um but Doug Christie did a pretty solid job you know he everyone remembers him as a player as like a kind of a defense first guy and and just kind of a tough guy and um and someone that was revered by his teammates during his playing days too so it seems like that’ll be a good culture fit for Nick um but like I said we’ll see what the rest of the offseason looks like for Sacramento i think that’s going to determine a lot about how I feel about Nick in Sacramento because Demar Rozan could get traded um you know we’ll see what they do with with some of the other guys like Zack Lavine they just traded for they got him in the Dear and Fox trade um Damonte Sabonis like they have some talented guys uh for sure like Malik Monk is there there’s been rumors about him getting moved um they’ve got some decent young guys too like Devin Carter who they took in last year’s draft i was super high on out of Providence um Keon Ellis has been pretty impressive um but I think Nick fits right in there with with that kind of wing rotation i feel like he’ll be a guy that could could play some backup point guard a little bit too if they need um but just kind of fill a need and um off the bench for those guys and um I think he’ll play well alongside either Demar De Rozan or or Zack Lavine when those when he likely plays alongside them um at times during games but um I think I would I would give obviously yeah Sacramento has kind of been one of the the jokes of the league for the for this century at least with VC running the show um it’s it hasn’t been the like like we said it hasn’t been the most well-run franchise and they’re not often in the playoffs um but I I think we have to give the new front office a chance at least to see what they do this off seasonason because I don’t know they might be in not blow it up territory but really trying to scale down um and getting away from this current era with they obviously moved on from Dear Fox and now they’ve got some some veteran star you know starish players that that that are on expensive contracts but it might not be enough in the West right now so we’ll see what they decide to do but I think Nick is in a good spot at least at least with the coaching staff they’re going to I think he’ll they obviously liked him a lot as I said to give up a future given significant capital so
to trade up trade to get him yeah
so I think they deserve a chance at least to to see what they do the rest of this offseason and then you know I trust the coaching staff to to get the most out of Nick that was one of the things that jumped out to me definitely when I was like diving at the roster and and obviously it’s going to be different you know come September than it is right now
but you look at it and it’s just like a lot of guys who are good but it’s also that weird spot where it’s like they’re just good enough that they’re going to want to go for it but just bad enough that it could just lead to a disastrous scenario yeah that that is true um yeah like I said Demand Rosen Zack Lavine those guys make a lot of money well I think Demar D Rozan is on a decent contract and there were some Miami rumors with him at some point um but they’ve I think they’ve got plenty of good pieces i did like the guy they got in the second round Maxi Mareno uh from Stanford the big man he was um a guy I had at um in the in my top 30 on my big board so I I liked him a lot um I mean they had some guys that have they’ve traded for recently that have come on strong like that have improved since they got there like Jake Laravia another guy who was on that Memphis team with Rody um had a had a nice season there i like Keegan Murray they drafted him in the top 10 a couple years ago out of Iowa just a really good shooter um and a solid defender at the four um it it’ll be interesting to see like I said Keon Ellis has come on strong uh recently for them as as a as kind of a smaller guard but a guy who’s who’s a pretty good defender so I mean they they they’ve done they’ve developed guys that maybe other people weren’t as high on into pretty quality whether it’s first guys off the bench or startering caliber players like a Keon Ellis um so I think they could do something similar with Nick at at kind of the two or the three wherever they kind of see him playing the most but I think right now as a backup to Demard Rosen I think that’s you can do worse if you’re Sacramento so I think you know there’ll be plenty of opportunity for him to uh to get to make his name heard and and to and to work his way into the rotation so um I think it’s a good spot right now and like I said we’ll see what the roster looks like at the end of the summer because the the NBA still feels a little bit backwards that they do the draft uh before free agency and all the trades and stuff but um it is what it is at this point so we’ll see you were in Fort Collins you know with me the other day when we were at CSU basketball practice and I will ask you just kind of what your initial reactions are here in just a second obviously a ton to be sorted you know between now and the regular season i’m not asking you to give me a starting five and predict their record or anything
i can do it i’ll do it but you know obviously there was more media than usual just given it’s dead of summer and they had the nique stuff and there were a lot of questions about him and and one of the things that Ali talked about when when he was asked I believe it was by Kevin but I’m not 100% sure essentially like when did you know Nick was really an NBA guy like he always had the athleticism we’ve talked about that you saw him in Boulder even when he was struggling and had so many things to put together you knew the athleticism was there you you saw the potential from the beginning but I mean his growth especially offensively but really his entire game over the last couple years has just been so tremendous ali mentioned you know like just some of the things he does defensively like clogging up passing lanes the explosiveness like you could tell from the beginning man that’s an NBA guy do you have a moment and this might be hard on the spot but do you have a moment when you remember seeing Nick and being like “Oh yeah this guy is for real.”
Um I actually posted the clip a couple days ago it was from his sophomore season in Boulder um
I think there was like a transition play with they were playing USC usc was ranked at the time um it was a January game in 2022 it would have been um it was one of my first games seeing Nick in person and I just really started covering um Buff’s basketball at that point and um KJ Simpson kicks it to to Tique at like the three-point line he takes like three steps and just dunks all over Drew Peterson who was a really really good player uh for USC and a guy who um I think is either in the G- League or has kind of had a cup of coffee in the NBA um but it was one of those plays where he just rose up and it felt like he could have touched the the ceiling if he wanted to um and it’s one of it’s still one of my most memorable moments at the event center of the last couple years and I think it was around then when I was telling people um whether with the with the Buffs or people that covered the Buffs with me like this is a team that had KJ Simpson and Tristan Dilva on it and and Jabari Walker too and I was like I think Nate Clifford has the best NBA potential on this roster um and he ends up getting drafted in the first round now Tristan went a little bit higher in last year’s first round and a little bit worse draft but um I think Nick I’ve always you know since around then I really felt like Nick was going to be an NBA player if he was ever able to to put it together put it all together which he obviously did this past season um and even in ways I didn’t really expect like I thought he could just be a super elite 3 and D guy in the NBA with his athleticism and if the shot ever came around on a consistent basis but I mean the the playmaking stuff he did this past year um and and how much he’s tightened up his handle i mean I was just really really impressed by everything he’s done the last couple years because I’ve always it’s been you know over three years now that I felt like he had the potential to be an NBA player so I’m super happy to see him see him make it because um he’s a guy I’ve always believed in obviously I’m a CSU guy through and through so I’m I’m always going to pound the table for my guys because I’m always going to point to the the things that make you know my school look good and when you look at what CSU’s done you know they’ve been to three NCA tournaments in four years they’ve now sent four guys to the league if you count Ton J who’s you know obviously going
I think you should count John for sure
he’s a CSU grad he was here four years you know obviously his ascension and he wasn’t an all-American like he was at Wisconsin but what does what does this say you know as somebody who it doesn’t bleed green and gold we’ll say it like that i think you want these programs to do well it’s going to be a hell of a lot more fun for you than if they’re losing and covering those types of teams
i enjoy going to the NCA tournament so doing that but like what does that say to you uh and your impression of the program and just like the the trajectory that CSU is on do you feel like this is something they can sustain like to me going into the pack 12 with what that league can be like I don’t think a San Diego state level program consistently should be unrealistic for CSU given the resources that they have
no for sure i think that’s definitely the goal and it kind of has always been the goal for everybody in the Mountain West is to be San Diego State because they’ve been the class of the league for for so long but um yeah I definitely think CSU can keep this going like why not i mean they obviously Nico was the the head of the head of the snake if you will for the last for this era um but I think Ali has had as much to do with that as Nico and I think you’ve got to be really encouraged by how much he’s developed guys you know you know and the stuff we don’t see away from practice and all that kind of stuff throughout the summer um Ali Nick Nick will tell you how many times that he spent he was in the gym with Ali working on his game um during the summer and after practice or before practice all that kind of stuff i mean and they always are trying to recruit high high character guys that are going to want to put the time in you know before and after practice when nobody’s watching um and that those are the kinds of guys that Ali loves to work with and I’m not sure if there’s an NBA guy on the roster right now but I didn’t think maybe there was two years ago either um and and then they end up sending both Isaiah and and Nick to the league from that from that roster so um it’ll it’ll be interesting to see what what this year’s team looks like without maybe a a true star like they’ve had for the the Rody and the Stevens and the Clifford era the last you know six years at this point um we’ll see what that looks like but I I mean I have all the confidence in the world that they’re going to get the most out of this roster whatever it ends up whatever we end up thinking of it by Christmas or in January um I’ve I’ve got all the confidence in the world that they they’ll get the most out of it and and I think they’ll be contenders in the Mountain West and I think they should they should feel really good as a program entering the Pack 12 in a year’s time as well keep on that note we’re going to come right back to it i got to shout out two more partners before we get out of here trucks have always been a part of Toyota’s DNA for generations Toyota’s built visit cororsite.com/dnbr celebrate responsibly coors Brewing Company Golden Colorado all right i I know you’ve got to get out of here in a couple minutes so we won’t we won’t spend too much time on all this but what are your what are your kind of general thoughts on what you saw from CSU so far your your initial thoughts on the roster one of the things I think I mentioned that day from an eye test like physically athletically they they look like a bigger stronger team you know than a couple years ago and I think that’s a product of the success that they’ve had that’s probably opened them up to a different caliber of of athletes like a San Diego State but what stands out to you about this team in June positional versatility like I think there’s a lot of guys on this roster that can do a lot of different things i don’t think there are many guys that that’ll be pigeonholed into being the point guard or or a wing i think there’s a lot of guys that can handle ball handling responsibilities a lot of guys that can play in the post as bigs or or stay on the stay on the perimeter and knock down threes or set screens and all that kind of stuff i think there’s a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things on this roster and I think it’ll I think it’s going to be fun for the coaching staff to try to piece this together because I do like the pieces they they’ve added um I think you’re right there’s a ton of athleticism uh with this team and it’s it was interesting to see them kind of put the initial pieces together for a very compl complicated offense and the guys struggling and maybe getting frustrated with each other at times um but I just think that shows that they care and and they’re really trying to buy in because I think they know once they get it down and they get the offense in sync with all with the athleticism and and everything all the talent that these guys have I think it’ll it’ll mesh really really well um and I I like a lot of the guy a lot of the new guys were were really really impressive um I think obviously Josh Pascarelli is is maybe the headliner for me among the new guys as um a guy that’ll probably be counted on right away to to to play a big scoring role um it’ll be interesting to see which of the big guys really cracks into the rotation and in the starting lineup um it looks like Auggie Kajul Kajulinus i’m still trying to learn how to pronounce his name but um he was really nice came introduced himself after practice um and I he was a guy I was I was really impressed with in watching him the the small sample size that it was but um and then Carrie Booth the the the size and the and the athleticism just really jumps off the jumps right in front pops right in front of your eyes it’s it’s something that I I I couldn’t look away from because you want to see how he looks he still looks like he’s trying to fill out his body a little bit more and um trying to gain some foot speed maybe or or try to just be a little more agile on the court but there’s there’s a player there if if the staff can tap into it and I think you know if if if you trust anybody it should be should be Ali to do that so um I mean you can mention all all the newcomers and and even the returning guys like Rashan I think it’s a it’s it’s an interesting mix of guys but I think it’ll be a pretty deep team and a pretty pretty athletic team um and one that’ll be fun to watch once it all comes together it could be similar to last year where they’re they’re pretty slow coming out of the gates because they’re all trying still trying to get to know each other and and play with each other um it is crazy that there is still one less newcomer than last year’s team had but I mean having NE come back was a was a big thing um so it’ll it’ll feel like there’s more new guys uh this time around but um I think you could be in for a similar type script where November might not look the prettiest um and I I’m sure they’ll hope to grind out the wins they have to this time around um and try to make sure the resume looks strong but I think by January and in February again they’ll be they’ll be humming as a as a pretty well-connected group that has the capability to do a lot of different things
i’m with you i think that the ceiling is potentially high i think the the floor is going to be in flux for a while as they they iron some things out and they’ll
I still feel like it could be a top three team in the conference though for sure
i do too and you know you mentioned Carrie Booth who I’ve talked about a lot i I’ve pleaded with CSU fans to be patient because from an eye it test standpoint physically that guy’s just different like there aren’t He’s an NBA athlete like the explosiveness he had a transition dunk where he
threw it down and it was just one of those where like oh [ __ ] all right like that’s that’s a different that’s a different type of guy out there but I I would point to the Nola Japa route more than the Neat Clifford route year one you know like Yeah I would be surprised if I was I would be surprised if he starts actually i would be too like it it’s just it’s going to take some time with him but the the athleticism is obviously all there he’s he’s really intriguing this roster as a whole I think is is very exciting uh the last thing I kind of wanted to ask you here before we got out um obviously a lot of Pack 12 news Texas State is not official but it’s one of those like they’re expecting the offer that doesn’t come out unless the offer is coming also the Pack 12 isn’t going to make the offer unless they know 100% it’s going to be accepted it’s one of those type deals what are your thoughts on all this i I don’t know if you got the beginning of the show but essentially I’ve just pointed out no it’s not the Pack 12 of old it was never going to be but it’s creating the best possible outcome out of a rough situation based on how some of these other leagues have have shifted and while Texas State is maybe not a PR smash you know like having everybody jump for joy or anything like that you get them at $5 million buyout versus you know close to 30 for Memphis it seems like they’re coming in at a reduced share according to you know Kanano which I again I think that makes it even more sensible i’m sorry if I just stole all the talking points but what’s your what’s your reaction to all this
i think it’s a I think it’s an interesting move like I think it’s a it’s a solid addition like you need to get the eight football school like it’s you have to at some point you have to get the eight football school to even be um considered an FBS conference and I think it’s it’s what comes after this too like I don’t think the Pack 12 should or is done um you mentioned the the Memphis buyout i still think that there should be that should be explored as a football only option um and let Memphis then go to the Big East for the rest of their sports i think that would be kind of a no-brainer for for everybody involved
go get Memphis and Yukon why not and then you know you bring in St mary’s for basketball side that’s a top two or three basketball league like that
yeah if you bring in St mary’s and and San Francisco and Santa Clara and really try to get the cream of the crop from the WCC you want to keep that rivalry with Gonzaga going and I think you know all the programs that you’re adding from the Mountain West like SDSU and Boise and CSU and Utah State you’re adding a bunch of good basketball programs there um and then if you try to take the best of the WCC you add in Wazu and Oregon State like I think that’s a really really good um a really really good basketball conference and then the football side we’ll we’ll see it’s it’s going to be a group of five no matter what even if you add Memphis as as a football only program um I I’m not too I wouldn’t be too thrilled about the Yukon thing that’s kind of what whatever to me but um just kind of do all those little things and then set yourself up in a couple years if like we’ve talked about before even last summer like if Callum Stanford gets sick of the ACC thing be right in position to to grab those guys bring those guys back um because then you’re really talking then you’re really talking as a football program if you’re able to add those programs back and setting yourself apart from the from the group of five so um it’s it’s a lot of dominoes still to fall but I think getting to that eight e eight football school uh was was the most important thing and Texas State is is a is a solid football program for sure i admittedly don’t know anything about their other sports whether from hoops to to baseball to whatever else they’ve got but it’s a it’s it’s a fun little town there in San Marcos between Austin and San Antonio and uh it’s it’s a pretty big school uh as well so it should be a fun fan base to have in the Pack 12 and and a solid football program i like um GJ Kenny the coach there um I think they’ve done a really good job the last couple years he’s a guy that I’ve um kept my eye on as a guy that will probably coach in a in a power conference someday um so I think it’s a solid addition on the football side and then we’ll see what comes after it with Memphis like I said and um if they’re able to poach some more WCC schools to to make a super basketball conference which you know is all I care about i’m stoked about the hoops possibilities i know me and you are going to have a lot of fun nerding out on that probably more so than the masses but I don’t care yeah I would love to see San Francisco come into Moby or Santa Clara and all those programs i mean Santa Clara had Jaylen Williams a couple years ago and San Francisco’s got Bill Russell uh hanging in their rafters like I think that those are some cool markets and some cool historical programs you could add to an already pretty fun hoops conference i think the basketball value is understated particularly if you’re able to get you know if you’re the second half of a double header with the Big East on TNT you know who’s going to have content to fill like there’s there’s a lot of possibility here uh Tyler as always man I appreciate you coming on with us you know how much I respect everything that you do i wouldn’t bring you on if I didn’t but also I just have a great time talking hoops with you make sure you guys subscribe to his podcast Basketball in the Mountains they talk on all things in the Rocky Mountain Time Zone which is is a unique angle uh he does a great work at the Denver Gazette as well what’s your Twitter at

yeah anytime appreciate it
all right before we get out of here just a couple of final thoughts uh again please support Tyler’s work he does a great job csu fans clamor for Denver post coverage and this isn’t me like taking shots at the post or anything like that there’s a lot of things out of the the staff’s hands at the post right now with their ownership situation it’s it’s kind of a disaster but the Gazette does a really good job covering CSU and Tyler in particular is is very committed he makes the effort he comes to practice he comes to games uh that’s a hell of a lot more than a lot of the people in the Denver market can say so we’ll just leave it at that support him he does great work if you are looking for NF uh NHL draft content the the ABS guys they’ll be live most of the day today i’ll probably hop on at a couple of points as well uh finally if you would subscribe to the newsletter it’s free you can do so at newsletter.thedr.com you can get it sent to your inbox every single morning everything you need to know about Denver sports in less than five minutes i get a lot of CSU stuff in there uh obviously when I’m making the decisions I get to decide what we focus on uh but we’ve uh really spent a lot of time revamping it i think it’s turning into something pretty cool i would appreciate it if you guys would at least check that out much love to our super producer Alyssa behind the scenes making all of this possible so much love to all of you and Ram Nation for supporting all of our CSU content year round i mean it’s the dead of June and we’re still going live multiple times a week talking about CSU like think about that compared to 15 years ago where it would feel like basketball would end and then it was just nothing until August until camp rolled around and we started getting a couple of newspaper stories it’s pretty cool to think about uh thanks for listening to the DMV Rams podcast presented by Branded Bills head to brandedbills.com use the code BBDNBR for 15% off your first order much love y’all always proud to be peace [Music] [Applause] [Music]
