Sixers Rumors: Quentin Grimes LEAVING 76ers In Bleacher Report’s Latest Free Agency Predictions

[Music] Bleacher Report released their predictions for where the top remaining NBA free agents will sign. In those predictions, Bleacher Report had Quinton Grimes leaving Philadelphia to sign with a different team. What team is that? How realistic is it? We will break that down here on today’s show. But guys, before we do, of course, we got the big news coming in last night that Paul George undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will be re-evaluated before training camp. I did a whole video on that here on the channel last night. So, if you missed it, if you need to catch up on everything going on, the latest with Paul George and this surgery, be sure to subscribe and turn on those notifications so that next time something like this happens, there’s more breaking news. You’ll be the first to know because you will be notified. Again, hit that sub button, turn on those notifications. So, Bleacher Report, as I mentioned in these free agency predictions, saying Quinton Grimes will be signing with the Utah Jazz. We’ve talked about the possibility of Utah being a player for Quinton Grimes in the past, but now Bleach report out here predicting that it’s going to happen again because of the money Utah opened up and with some of the non-g guaranteed salaries they can release in KJ Martin in Jaden Springer, they could have enough money to throw Grimes a pretty substantial offer. And should the Sixers let him go to Utah if the Jazz do offer Grimes an amount that Philadelphia might not be comfortable paying? Here’s Greg Schwarz of Bleacher Report on Quinton Grimes possibly signing with Utah. Even with two players earning over $50 million next year, the Sixers are not a luxury tax team right now. Do have access the full 14.1 million mid-level exception. Bringing Grimes back on a new deal would change this, however, and add a lot of overlap to the wing position. Any new contract for Grimes is almost certainly going to push Philly past the first apron. They are currently $9.9 million below that number. The team already has Tyrese Maxi, Jared McCain, BJ Edgecom, Kelly Ubé Jr., Eric Gordon, and more on the wing. Meaning Grimes is not going to get the 33.7 minutes per game he received down the stretch of last season when half of the team was injured and tanking. Just a couple thoughts on what Schwarz had to say there. I I do hear the argument quite a bit from Sixers fans that Grimes isn’t totally necessary because you have all these other players on the roster. But look, as we’ll get to, Tyrese Maxi isn’t a wing. Not sure why he’s included in that conversation, right? Jared McCain, more of a smaller guard, but also coming off an injury. Not sure what to expect there. BJ Edgecom’s a rookie, looked great in his one summer league game, but you can’t predict how good he’s going to be right away. And then, you know, Eric Gordon, I don’t think Sixers are going to get really much of anything from Eric Gordon at all. And then Kelly, of course, solid player, could end up being traded though at some point during the season. I don’t think with what you have on the roster right now, you necessarily need to say that you don’t have room for Quinton Grimes. Now, the the money thing is a whole another story, but you save the money and you put yourself the position you are in right now by letting Gershavell walk to give Grimes that money. Now, how much money are we talking? Because, of course, he isn’t going to put up the same numbers he did at the end of last season. He’s not going to have to, right? But I don’t think you’re paying him to put up 25 points a game or similar to what he was putting up with his time with the Sixers. I think you’re paying him to play a lesser role but still make a large impact because you saw what Grimes can do when he is given a larger role. Now, I don’t think he’ll put up 225 and four and a half this season like he did in his 28 games with Philadelphia last season, but he doesn’t need to. he can do similar things in a lesser role, focus even more in on the defensive side of the ball where he’s already a very good player and then shoot with that same efficiency, take on a larger role at times if needed, if there’s injuries or if he’s out there leading a second unit, right? You’re just encouraged by what he did, but you don’t necessarily need to pay him 20 plus million dollars or 25 million like he’s asking for. I don’t think that’ll be the price that it ends up coming in as for me. I think $16 to $18 million a year is a perfect middle ground, right? It’s a little bit above that mid-level exception at $14 million. And look, I get for the Sixers, you don’t want to bet against yourself, right? You don’t want to raise the price for no reason, but same time, you know, I think Grimes as a player you want to lock in for the long term. And look, $60 million to $18 million, it might sound like a lot to some people, but in today’s NBA, that’s not a huge salary. And there’s plenty of players who I would say are in similar veins and similar groups in terms of skill set to Quinton Grimes who are making about the same amount of money, especially a lot of guys that got paid this off seasonason. Bianca Purle got almost $20 million a year. Alex Guso is making 18. Andrew Nehard’s making 18. Santi Alama just got $16.1 million in this off season. Nikkil Alexander Walker from the Hawks also just got $15.1 million. I would argue Quinton Grimes is somewhere in this realm of players here. Maybe doesn’t quite make the impact Caruso does. Obviously just won a championship, but Santi Alama to kill Alexander Walker. I’d say he’s in that range of players at least, right? So you give him around that range of money. I think that’s fair. And I wouldn’t say the Sixers would be overpaying in that sense. Now, does this move make sense for Utah? Because of course, this is all considering that Utah wants to pay up and give Grimes a big deal considering they have traded a lot of their veterans and they’re going to be tanking the season to try to get a top pick in next year’s draft. So Schwarz mentioning this for Utah that Grimes still does fit a rebuilding Jazz team at 25 years old that has shooting guard minutes available after trading Colin Ston and agreeing to a buyout with Jordan Clarkson. Grimes would be the perfect two guard in Utah. The team already has Isaiah Kier, Keonte George handling the ball, Ace Bailey, Cody Williams in the wing, Lorie Markin at the four fulltime with John Collins traded and Walker Kesler at center. Grimes would round out this court nicely in a sign and trade. And you know, I think theoretically with the way the roster is constructed right now, that would be a good fit with Grimes over there. But also at the same time, like Utah with the way this 2026 draft class is set up with some heavy heavy hitters at the top, I think they want to be as bad as they possibly can to finally land that number one overall pick and hopefully draft a differencemaking player, a franchise level talent. So, they traded away some of their veterans that would help them win games. Would Grimes help them win too many games? It’s possible. Now, we know how Danny Engel and the Jazz can operate at times. They could just throw a big offer at Grimes, hoping the Sixers are forced to match. But look, if Utah does give Grimes a big offer, I’m talking like over $20 million. Good for him. He can accept it. He can go play on Utah. I don’t think you need to overpay for him if Utah does give him a massive, massive deal. But I don’t necessarily think that’s going to be the case. If Utah does give him a deal, I think it’ll probably be around the same range in that 16 to$18 million that we talked about. And if they don’t give him a big contract, I think it is in Grimes’s best interest to sign a deal with Philadelphia rather than trying to play out the year on the $ 8.7 million qualifying offer because I don’t think his value will ever be as high as it is right now. He’s not going to put up the same number as he did at the end of last season in this season and he’d be risking not being able to sign as long of a deal for as much money as he is right now. Even if it’s not as much as he was hoping for if he wanted over $20 million this off season and he’s not going to get that. I think you got to take what you can get. You don’t want to make a mistake and end up costing yourself money in the long run because you try to bet on yourself in a year when you’re not going to have the same offensive responsibilities you did at the end of this past season. So, my prediction through all of this, even though Bleacher Reports predicting that Grimes will sign with Utah, I’m going to predict that he will be back in Philadelphia on a long-term deal in that 16 to$18 million range. Look, it’s taking a while. All these restricted free agents are taking a while because there’s no market for any of them. No other teams are offering them real deals. And at the end of the day, I don’t think Utah is going to be the one to offer Grimes a deal upwards of $20 million. Could they? Sure. Will they? I do not think so. Speaking of all those restricted free agents, plenty of guys like Quinton Grimes, Josh Giddy for the Bulls, Jonathan Ginga for the Warriors. All restricted free agents who have yet to sign a deal. So, have some fun. Predict for me. Who do you think ends up signing first, whether their team or signs a deal with another squad? Is it Quinton Grimes type QG, Josh Giddy type JG, or Jonathan Kaminga type JK? You also got Cam Thomas out there as well waiting on a deal. So, let me know your thoughts down in the comments section. Now, coming up next, we’re going to get to what happens and where the Sixers can pivot to if by some chance Grimes does sign with the Utah Jazz and you lose him for nothing. We’ll get into that here in just a moment. But before we do, I have an insane deal to tell you guys about over at Fanatics on this Sixers pullover cutoff hoodie. This hoodie originally $100 on their website, but right now you can get this hoodie in all sizes for just $35. That is $65 off. Well over 50% off on this hoodie. It is the best deal we have ever told you about here on this show. And probably the best deal you’re going to find on an item like this for a long, long time. And not only do you save a bunch of money, but it’s a pretty clean hoodie as well. I think pretty good as you get, you know, from the summer to the fall when it’s still warm out, but you want something a little heavier, too. I think it’s looks great. It’ll feel great, and it’ll feel great saving some money as well. chatsports.com/sixers hoodie. You plug in that link, it’ll take you there. That deal will apply again. chatsports.comixers hoodie. That’ll be in the description and the comments of today’s show. Go take advantage of that deal before it is too late. So, back to this Quinton Grimes debate. What does happen next? Let’s just say Quinton Grimes leaves. I don’t think Utah would want to do a siding trade. They have no reason to because they have the money already to sign Grimes with cap space. So, if he does just go, the Sixers do not want to match. let him walk to Utah theoretically. What can Philadelphia do next to try to supplement those losses of both Grimes but also Yabellle? Because you could have brought in Gian Yabelli if you knew you were going to lose Grimes and you let him pretty much walk for nothing in that scenario. Theoretically, as the Bleacher Report article brought up, the Sixers would currently have access to the $14.1 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which theoretically would allow them to sign a player to that amount of money right now. But because of where the Sixers are at in relation to the first apron, they’re only about $10 million away from the first apron. When you use this exception, you get hardcapped at that first apron number, meaning you cannot go over it. So, the Sixers couldn’t even use the entire $14.1 million. You could only use about 9ish million dollars of that to sign a player in free agency to try to felt the roster because you do have an open roster spot and if you lose Grimes for nothing, you’d like to get something else of value to replace him on the roster. But with that nish million dollars, could Philadelphia sign anybody? There’s just not a lot of guys out there right now in free agency that I think can make a real impact on this team. Now Damen Lillard probably the top remaining free agent available, but he’s not going to play this season with his torn Achilles. So you’re not looking to sign him. Josh Giddy, Jonathan Kaminga, Cam Thomas, all restricted free agents. I don’t think you have much of a chance of getting any of those guys with that $9 million amount either. They’re looking for well more than that. Al Horford. We’ll see if he retires. I don’t want him back on Philly and doesn’t really fill the void that Quinton Grimes leaving creates. Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, two veteran guards. Look, I’m good on both of those guys as well. Amir Coffee, I like him as an option for this team, but again, you are not using that amount of money on air Coffee. Malcolm Broad and Chris Buché, I could say the same thing for all of those guys as well. So, it’s just not a lot of great external options left in free agency if you do lose Grimes. And that’s why I think the Sixers will make it a priority to bring him back because you can’t really replace him with much of anything else. Now, there is a scenario where if the Sixers decide not to use that mid-level exception, assign someone, you can hold on to it until the trade deadline and actually use it as a trade exception. So that is certainly a scenario, but again, same instance, you wouldn’t even be able to use the full thing. So what player are you trading for that’s going to make an impact that’s under $10 million? I just don’t really see a scenario because you can’t combine it with other player salaries. You can’t go like UB’s 8 million, Drummond’s five, and then the nine of the trade exception. You’re not allowed to do that. You can’t combine it with other players salaries. So I just don’t see a scenario uh where that would be a smart option for Philadelphia. So none of the external options are looking that good. So, you probably have to look internally to replace Quinton Grimes if it really does come to that. Obviously, the first guy you’re looking at is VJ Edgecom, right? Great summer league debut, been injured since then. I don’t think that’ll be a problem come the start of the season. But as good as he looked in his first game, and I said, man, Sixers might have got another tremendous pick here in the NBA draft, we still got to see it when the NBA season starts, right? As good as he looked in summer league, it was just one game and it was just summer league, right? We got to see what he can do out there on the floor playing real NBA minutes. Will he be ready to contribute right away? Even if you’re confident he can, we still have to see it, right? So, that’s a big unknown that you’d be relying on if Grimes does leave. And something similar can be said about Jared McCain. Now, we saw more good things from Jared McCain last season against actual NBA competition, but coming off the meniscus injury, how healthy is he going to be right away? Can he replicate the production he had last year? Again, it’s just an unknown. You cannot count on I would say McCain being the same guy right away. Could he be? Sure. And could BJ be great right right away? Sure. But you don’t know those things, right? So, it’s just a lot of unknowns to be heading into the year with on top of the fact that you now have this Paul George injury that we talked about to deal with. And whether he’s ready for the season or not, he should be. But there’s a chance that maybe it does linger given his injury history. So you could be talking about Jared McCain not being 100% to start the season. BJ Edgecom, you just don’t know what you’re going to get. And Paul George might not be 100% either. So then it’s like you got Maxi, how can you rely on Joel Embiid at this point to be healthy? Then what? Kelly Ubé, Justin Edwards, Adam Bona, Eric Gordon, like man, you could be right back in the same type of spot you were last season if you do lose Quinton Grimes for nothing. So, if Utah does give him a huge, huge bag, I wouldn’t blame the Sixers for not matching, but they’d be in a little bit of a troublesome spot, I would say, if Grimes does end up leaving for a team like Utah out there in free agency. We’ll continue to monitor this entire Quinton Grimes situation. Whenever he does eventually sign a deal, hopefully with the 76ers, you’ll be the first to know because you’ll be watching Philadelphia 76ers now. So, hit that sub button again. 1. Who signs first? Type 'QG' for Quentin Grimes, 'JG' for Josh Giddey or 'JK' for Jonathan Kuminga

  2. Grimes wants 25 million unfortunately. If any team was going to pay him this, it seems they would have done it by now. I think the sixers should match any offer up to 20 million

  3. This would be a disaster, this should have been taken into consideration prior to letting Yabu walk. Morey and company needs to properly assess their talent, smh….

  4. The 76ers fck up everything they touch. Josh Harris IS the curse of Philadelphia. DO NOT support the 76ers in and way. Boycott them at every level. Don't buy shit from them, including tickets. Thats the only way out of the curse- get Harris to sell the team and get his rat looking ass outta Philly.

  5. Can you believe people who get paid MILLIONS to run a professional basketball team thought signing a bunch of 35+ geriatric players a couple of seasons ago?

This is their full time job & you would think they would they were playing a season of NBA Live 99

  6. Philly has 4 guards for regular minutes (maxey, mccain, vj and grimes). You have 2×48=96 minutes availabe.
    32-34 for maxey, 20 mccain, 20 vj, 22-24 grimes.
And maybe grimes can play some sf minutes.
And sometimes someone can get rest or is injured and additional minutes are availabe at pg/sg.
Oubre will play sf/pf and not pg/sg
