De’Aaron Fox talk contract extension, San Antonio, team legends, expectations & more
one, going into my third contract, uh obviously a lot of guys don’t get to make it here. Um going into year nine is something that’s extraordinary in itself, but uh being able to do it here, being able to do it for such a storied, uh franchise, uh for me is just a blessing, and I appreciate them believing in me. Uh and I’m just ready to, you know, have a full healthy season. Uh, the city’s been I mean, ever since I got here, even before I was playing for the Spurs and I spent some time here, um, they just love basketball, like such a big basketball city. Um, and I feel like they appreciated me even before I got here. But, you know, since I’ve been here and since I’ve been putting on uh that black and white jersey, I’ve just been welcomed with open arms and it’s been fantastic. I felt the love even, you know, through the circumstances that we went through at the end of the of last year. um you still just feel the excitement obviously of this team and the future that’s ahead of us. Uh I think what’ll be different going forward is fans are going to see me play with 10 fingers. Uh I mean obviously you know healthwise uh last year was definitely different and then like I said me coming in the middle of the season um I think I’m a I think I’m a smart guy but trying to learn a playbook that quickly uh was definitely difficult. Um, but this year being able to get a training camp and be able and allowing guys to, you know, play against and with each other during the summer, uh, and just be able to gel together, that’s when you, and we say this all the time and NBA team say this all the time, that’s when you truly get better as a team. um through the summertime just trying to find ways to get together because you know some guys live in different places and wherever you can uh whenever you can get together and be able to work out with each other um and just become familiar with each other’s games. Uh that’s when you truly you know develop as a team and I think we’ve done that a lot this summer. Guys have been together and guys have been working hard. So like I said I think the future’s bright. I mean I think the Spurs won all five of their championships while I was alive. So just and obviously like the first one I probably don’t remember but all the ones after that I can vividly remember all of those. So um just being able to be a part of an organization like this who have won um so much in your lifetime. Um like you you come in here and you feel that you feel that in the environment, you feel that in the fans and then you go into the practice facility or you go into the arena and you see those banners hanging. Um, and then I talking to Manu earlier today and you see TP go around and you see um Tim around um David Robinson was here when Steph won uh rookie of the year like you see these guys who have been a part of such a winning culture. Uh you you have no I mean there’s nothing you can do besides try to build on that and I think it was the same thing with Kentucky. you know, I went to Kentucky and you see all those banners that are hanging in rafters and that just gives you um just another sense of of motivation uh to be able to do that as well. So, um that’s why that’s why I said that and I truly believe in this group and I truly believe this this group can continue to gel together and continue to grow together and for sure hang up more banners.
