Giannis Antetokounmpo Waiting On Bucks For Permission To Play For Greece

Yo, what’s going on guys? And today we’ll be talking about why Giannis isn’t participating with the Greece national basketball team yet. So, the reason why I want to cover this, if you don’t know, I’ll actually be in RIA Latvia this year attending the knockout and the final game, the championship game for Euro Basket as I work for USA Today Sports Hoops Hype and I’ve always wanted to go to one of these national team tournaments ever since watching the past World Cup when it was in Manila. Now today’s report is coming from eurohoops.net. Specifically the man who wrote this article is because we gota always shout out to the man Ares Barkas and Stavros Barois. Hopefully I did not butcher your names but I’ll link it in the description. According to them, Giannis Antrempo waiting on Bucks for permission to play for Greece. The FIBA NBA agreement. Each NBA player is allowed to join training camp of his national team 28 days before the start of a major FIA tournament. FIA being the Federal International Basketball Association that governs all national and like international national team and all international basketball games. Greece starts the Euro basket on the 28th of August. So, Giannis should have been available for the 1st of August. Per Euro Hoop sources, due to his contract, the Bugs have to give their permission because the insurance policy of FIA, which is already taken care of by the Greek Federation, doesn’t cover his full annual compensation in case of an injury. There’s a cap on the insurance contract and Giannis Joic and Donic are some of the very few non US players who are paid well over his limit. Now what does this all mean? So Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks and obviously the Greek Basketball Federation are basically waiting Giannis and the Greek Basketball team for the Bucks written permission to fully join Greece because the FIA insurance the Greek Federation arrange does not cover his full MBA salary. The affformentioned cap on the policy is what we mentioned earlier. For those high earners, teams often want extra protection before clearing them. Under FIA rules, NBA players not being able to show up till 28 days before the tournament is just kind of more of like I think a safety net for liability. and him missing these early friendlies isn’t a huge deal, but you would expect him to want to be with the team to ramp up, build that chemistry. But why this is happening is the insurance payout ceiling sits below Giannis’ annual compensation, which is at this point, I want to say over $50 million. I’m going to confirm his salary right here with you guys. I was going to I’m going with $54 million. Giannis is making 54.1. There we go. I love how I got that off the dome and then got to confirm it on hoops.com. And what has to do is the Bucks have to sign on or add top of policy, which is just a secondary insurance policy to bridge the gap. Euro hoops first detailed the situation. And what this could all mean is that for Greece, fewer reps in chemistry development before their group C games, which Italy on the August 28th and Spain on September 4th, especially if this approval lags, but no indication that Giannis will miss the main event once coverage is in place. For the Bucks, this is standard risk management. Anybody could get hurt during international basketball. Anybody could get hurt in the offseason. So, expect clearance once coverage matches get close because he’s going to play. He’s going to play. And like any other thing that goes off in the offseason, a player can get hurt from slipping on a banana peel to getting hurt training, lifting weights, practicing, shooting a jump shot, or in a game. And this is just kind of the back scenes that you don’t really think about in basketball. But yeah, that’s it. Bye.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is still waiting for the Milwaukee Bucks’ permission to join Greece’s EuroBasket 2025 training camp. Under the FIBA-NBA agreement, NBA players can join their national teams 28 days before a major FIBA tournament — meaning Giannis should have been available on August 1.
According to Eurohoops, the delay stems from his contract and the insurance policy cap. While the Greek federation has covered insurance costs, FIBA’s policy doesn’t fully protect Giannis’ massive annual salary in case of injury. This same limitation applies to stars like Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic.
