Retinal detachments can be delayed. You can get trauma and says to months later you can have your retina detach. The trauma loosen the bonds and they can slowly come apart. After a trauma we always have patient look out for the symptoms because it is pretty commonly a late sequellae that is seen. So it is totally possible that it later detached because of the trauma. He may also be highly nearsighted which causes the retina to be thin which also makes him more susceptible. Also using drops for extended periods can definitely cause redness due to the preservatives in them.
