"You need 3 or more chips to be an all-time great coach" is absolute rubbish. If that was the case only 5 guys would be all-time greats. Belichick, Chuck Noll, Andy Reid, Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs.
Total wins and win% also comes into play. Vince Lombardi had 2 Super Bowls but won more chips before the merger. I would also add other guys who have won 2 chips like Don Shula, Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, George Seifert, Tom Landry. Also Tom Coughlin also has 2 Super Bowls not one. Mike Shanahan deserves a shout as well.
Then you have guys like George Halas, Paul Brown and Curly Lambeau who were the greatest before the merger. I mean Don Shula is #1 in total wins he HAS TO be in considered as one of the greatest of-all time plus he coached the only undefeated champion the 72 Dolphins. Halas is #2 in total wins. Tom Landry, Lambeau and Paul Brown are all in the top 7 for wins. You have John Madden with a .759 winning % which is the highest in the Super Bowl era. Does he not get in? George Allen has the 3rd greatest winning % in the Super Bowl era. Both Madden and Allen coached about a decade maybe slightly more.
Then there's also Marty Shottenheimer who is 8th in total wins. You have guys like Dan Reeves. Dick Vermeil, Pete Carrol, Mike Holmgren, Sean Peyton, Bill Cowher, Mike Ditka. All deserve an honorable mention. So when you look at some of these names and their accomplishments it's clear they should be in the list. Aqib is asking "So is the list 40 coaches long"? No. That's too much. But it's also not just 5 coaches. Realistically the list is probably 10-15 coaches that deserve a spot. NFL has been around for a looong time.
These are non negotiables imo: Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll, Andy Reid, Bilichick, Joe Gibbs, John Madden, George Halas, Curly Lambeau, Paul Brown, Don Shula and Tom Landry. The others I mentioned it's a more reasonable debate. But these 11 are non negotiables.
