OG almost sold the Knicks win.
There's been a lot of rumors about how the Knicks aren't happy with KAT's defense and they might be looking to move him, but surely they knew what they were getting when they traded for him. KAT has always struggled on defense, and playing him alongside Brunson, another guy with defensive shortcomings, was always going to put a hard cap on the team's defensive ceiling.
The real issue, IMO, is the inability of the Knicks to use KAT's full offensive potential, which would have compensated for his weakness on defense. KAT thrives in two situations; pick and pops with an aggressive driving guard, and as a post up/iso scorer. The Knicks don't run that kind of offense. Brunson is a ball dominant, heliocentric scorer who is mostly looking for his own shot. Even in the PNR, his Chris Paul-style snake dribble works better with a lob threat, not a shooter, since he rarely attacks the basket with pace, and is more likely to pull up from midrange or shift into iso scorer mode. When he's not on the court, the Knicks don't really make an effort to run the offense through KAT either. Brown wants a sort of egalitarian, Temu Warriors motion ofense, with guys moving and passing and running DHOs until the open guy takes the shot. It's good basketball, but again, KAT isn't earning his money in that scheme, and his defense isn't good enough to keep him on the floor.
The Knicks are just cruising through the paths of their opponents, whereas the Kings are still needing a big breakthrough to have any hope, but I don’t think they will be able to.
