Surprised by his defense as a heat fan. It has immensely improved where it was the point that I didn't like the pick at all. Then again, I think its a testament to the Heat development program in bringing raw, untapped potential type of players and forming them into complete, productive players on both ends. The main sticking points that he needs to improve on is finishing through contact, slashing as of right now. In his role, I think his spot-up shooting is enough right now, but obviously as time progress, his influence over the offense will increase to the point where his off the dribble scoring will be more advanced. Shoutout Pelle Laarson, and Myron Gardner too.
Miami is rebuilding year by year without tanking
This year has looked great so far for rookies with aesthetically good jumpers who shot poorly in college. Egor and Kasparas
Im a huge KJ fan, one of the things that stood out to me is the role versatility/adaptability that you spoke of.
When I first watched him with Barcelona he was playing with some above the rim type athletes that he could throw lobs to in the PnR or wings that could really get out in transition and play above the rim, or beat a closeout in one bounce for a finish. Played a more heavy pass-leaning floor general type of game, tho he obviously still took the stepback 3’s and whatnot.
Then I saw him in FIBA U19 right before his freshmen year @ Illinois and he didnt have the lob threats and long, athletic slashers on his national team. He was basically a cold-blooded scorer on that team and a very aggressive driver. Was interesting to see how seamlessly he made that transition.
And like you mentioned in college he went from pretty ball dominant in the first semester to Will Riley breaking out and getting more on-ball reps and KJ got off the ball more.
Interesting to see how he’s continuing to adapt in the NBA and I do think the Heat are doing a great job developing him in this way while he takes some time to improve his handle and work on handling physicality & ball pressure.
It might sound crazy but I do think he’s on his way to becoming an all star level player, if that handle can get a little more American-ized for lack of a better term. If the Heat keep Ware and KJ keeps working his way up the ladder, that’s an elite ball screen pairing considering KJ’s shooting + passing creativity & Ware’s insane lob radius + real juice as a pop threat.
rent is due, im loving the upload streak holy
love my Illinois players
